Mitchell Johnson urges overseas players to skip remainder of IPL due to safety concerns

The Hindu16-05-2025

Former Australian speed merchant Mitchell Johnson said it is not wise for overseas players to return for the remainder of the IPL and urged them to prioritise safety over pay cheques in the prevailing circumstances arising out of India-Pakistan military hostilities.
The world's biggest T20 league was suspended on May 9 due to the tensions on the border triggered by the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. A day after its suspension, a ceasefire between the two countries was announced, paving the way for IPL's resumption from Saturday.
Johnson, however, believes it would be prudent for the foreign players to skip the remaining matches.
"While Cricket Australia has empowered players to make their own decisions, the weight of those choices can be heavy," Johnson wrote in his column for the West Australian.
"Cricket might involve mega bucks these days but it is still just a game, and that has been brought sharply into focus after the Indian Premier League's hiatus this week.
"If I had to make a call whether to head back to India and finish the tournament, it would be an easy decision. It's a no from me. Lives and safety are the most important thing, not pay cheques," the former left-arm pacer added.
The BCCI on Monday said it has decided to resume the league after holding extensive consultations and getting necessary clearances from the government, pushing the final to June 3 from the originally scheduled May 25.
The revised schedule leaves little turnaround time for the Australian and South African players, who decide to take part in the IPL play-offs, to prepare for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, which begins in Lord's from June 11.
Johnson said, "It's a personal decision. No one should be coerced or feel pressured into going back, even if the IPL and Pakistan Super League, which has also been halted, push hard for it. Both tournaments should just end now or consider moving, which then becomes a huge financial issue.
"And let's not forget that some Australian and South African players will need to prepare for the upcoming World Test Championship final.
"With the IPL final now pushed back to June 3, just a week before the WTC final starts at Lord's, the impact on players' preparation for what is supposedly as Test cricket's showpiece match is another issue."
While a majority of overseas players who had gone back home are expected to return for the remaining matches, some remained anxious.
"Cricket is a source of pride and unity for fans. Despite the challenges posed by the current situation, the passion for the game remains unwavering.
"However, the reality is that the safety and well-being of players, fans, and everyone involved in these leagues must be prioritised," Johnson wrote.
"While cricket can bridge divides and promote camaraderie, it is essential to consider the implications of playing in such a tense security environment.
"Ultimately, the hope is that sporting events can resume in a positive atmosphere, but allowing both tournaments to restart this weekend will have some backlash.
"Hopefully once tensions between the two nations ease, both leagues can thrive again and bring joy to countless cricket lovers. But we must not forget the bigger picture in all this," the Australian added.

M.S. Dhoni among seven others inducted into ICC's Hall of Fame

Former India captain M.S. Dhoni was on Monday (June 9, 2025) inducted into the ICC's Hall of Fame for the year 2025 along with Australian great Matthew Hayden and South Africa's Hashim Amla. The International Cricket Council (ICC) will be inducting seven cricketers — five men and two women — in its Hall of Fame 2025. "Celebrated for his calm under pressure and unmatched tactical nous, but also a trailblazer in the shorter formats, MS Dhoni's legacy as one of the game's greatest finishers, leaders and wicketkeepers has been honoured with his induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame," said the ICC statement. "With 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals and 538 matches across formats for India, Dhoni's numbers reflect not just excellence but extraordinary consistency, fitness and longevity," it said. Dhoni, who led India to the T20 World Cup win in 2007, ODI World Cup victory in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013, said in a statement shared by the governing body that, "It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world." "To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever."

"Best in the world": South Africa players hail Kagiso Rabada ahead of WTC final

New Delhi [india], June 9 (ANI): Ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia from June 11, South African players Kyle Verreynne, David Bedingham, Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs lauded right-arm seamer Kagiso Rabada and went on to say that he is 'best in the world.' The spearhead is second in the ICC Men's Test Bowling Rankings, behind only Jasprit Bumrah, but a number of Rabada's teammates consider him 'the best bowler in the world.'. 'KG's the best bowler in the world,' wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne confidently declared, speaking exclusively to the ICC before the World Test Championship decider, which starts at Lord's on Wednesday. 'Without a doubt, he's the best bowler in the world and I think he's one of those guys that always wants to do it on the big stage and you don't get any stages bigger than this, so I think he's going to be massive for us,' he added. As wicket-keeper, Verreynne is uniquely poised to witness what makes Rabada the star he is - or, in his words, a 'different beast'. The 28-year-old was behind the stumps when his team-mate took that special five-for at Lord's a few years ago, 'Any game that he plays in, any team that he plays for, KG with the Proteas badge, and I think especially in white kit, is a different beast. I know how much Test cricket means to him and I know how much he loves this current team and this space, so putting all of those things into his performance, I think he'll be a massive threat,' the wicketkeeper-batter said. Those sentiments were echoed by fellow teammate David Bedingham, who looks forward to seeing what Rabada can deliver on the unique Lord's wicket, which always offers opportunities for accurate bowlers. 'I genuinely think he's the best bowler in the world. He's played here (Lord's), he's taken wickets here before, so him going well will go a long way to us winning the whole thing. He's an amazing person... and he makes our jobs a lot easier. He's the leader of our attack,' said Bedingham. As South Africa looks to end its ICC silverware drought, its players are hyper aware that it'll be crucial that its stars relish and handle the high-pressure environment that comes with stages of this magnitude. '(Rabada) gets up for the really big moments. He wants to lead from the front and he takes a lot of guys with him on that journey. So, obviously a big player for us, but he's (also) been complemented really well in the bowling department by everyone else and they've, sort of, found a way to work really well together. No doubt he's the leader of the attack, but he pulls guys with him and guys tend to follow,' opener Aiden Markram said. Rabada earned a spot on the Lord's honour board the last time the Proteas played a Test at the hallowed venue, as South Africa beat England by an innings and 12 runs in August 2022. The fast bowler compiled a first innings return of 5/52 off 19 overs - and seven scalps for the match. 'I remember the wicket was quite busy. We were in the slip cordon and we were on edge the whole time, because it felt like every ball you could get a catch. But, (Rabada) bowled really well. He used the (Lord's) slope and various angles really well, broke partnerships when there was a partnership to break and did what he does... so special to have been on the field,' Markram continued. Also speaking exclusively to ICC Digital, batter Tristan Stubbs added that Rabada will be in peak damage-inflicting form at Lord's. 'He's an amazing bowler and he's fresh and ready to go, I'm happy he's on my team,' he said. (ANI)

"Hopefully it runs out of steam pretty quickly": Josh Hazlewood on his nickname HazelGod

New Delhi [India] June 9 (ANI): Australian seamer Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, spinner Nathan Lyon reflected on Hazlewood's nickname, Hazel God given by his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans, ahead of their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at Lord's on June 11. In a video posted by ICC on Instagram, Hazlewood said, 'Yeah, hopefully it runs out of steam pretty quickly.' In a video posted by ICC on Instagram, Starc said, 'Hopefully it sticks, because I don't think he likes it too much. He's had a fantastic few months, the big fella over in India, and he's come home with bags of cash. So I look forward to seeing him in action here atthe Lords.' 'Hazel God, he actually referred to himself as it the other day, which totally took me back by surprise. Off the back of him winning the IPL, I think he's running with it,' Nathan Lyon said in a video posted by ICC on Instagram. Hazlewood arrives in UK in red hot form, completing a sensational Indian Premier League campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he picked up 22 wickets and played a crucial role in their title-winning run. He has slowly eased back into red-ball preparation, bowling around five overs at moderate intensity during Australia's optional training session in Beckenham on Saturday. If he pulls up well, Hazlewood will likely edge out Scott Boland for a spot in the starting XI for the WTC final. Since returning to the Test setup during the 2023 Ashes, Hazlewood has been in remarkable form, claiming 57 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 19.68. Australia squad for WTC final: Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Beau Webster, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon, Matt Kuhnemann. Travelling reserve: Brendan Doggett. (ANI)
