Oklahoma GM Jim Nagy comments on Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee breakup
New Oklahoma Sooners general manager Jim Nagy has been tasked with helping turn the program around after a 6-7 season in 2024. Nagy, who replaces Curtis Lofton, is bringing a new, progressive approach to the name, image and likeness wilderness that college football is currently wandering in. His hire at OU has been praised as a move that could help the team get back into championship contention.
At the "Crimson Combine", Nagy was asked about a big piece of college football news that is arguably the biggest story in all of sports right now. The breakup of the Tennessee Volunteers and former five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava sent shockwaves across college athletics.
Iamaleava held out of practice and team meetings for more money on his NIL "contract" late last week, prompting head coach Josh Heupel to announce on Saturday that the Vols had parted ways with their starting quarterback. Iamaleava will enter the transfer portal when it opens from April 16 to 25 and will look for his next home in college football.
More: Oklahoma recruiting strategy more important than ever amid Nico Iamaleava saga
The duo of Iamaleava and Heupel, representing opposite sides, may have just changed college football with their respective decisions. And if something like that can happen at a place like Knoxville, rich in tradition and history, who's to say it can't happen in Norman?
Nagy, speaking just hours after the news of the split broke, explained a group text between him and the OU coaching staff where he laid down the law. His plan is to stop similar issues from even coming up at Oklahoma.
"This can't happen here," Nagy said. "There are red flags along the way that probably could've pointed to this happening ... That's a doomsday scenario."
Nagy also emphasized the importance of building relationships with players and their families throughout the recruiting process, a stance that is in line with head coach Brent Venables' philosophy as well.
"I think you really need to get to know these players and their families through the recruiting process," Nagy said. "Knowing the player is one thing. We can all watch the tape and identify that. But when we have families on campus and we have players on campus, that's really work to get to know them."
Iamaleava's choice certainly isn't the last of its kind in college football. Oklahoma's new GM is doing his best to ensure that the Sooners don't find themselves in that kind of situation down the road.

Club's new 13-year-old stadium announcer praised

A young football fan who stepped up at short notice to provide cover as a stadium announcer said he was pleased to have received "loads of compliments". When Burscough FC put out an SOS this summer, 13-year-old James - whose dad Richard volunteers as a kitman at the North West Counties Premier club - put his hand up. Richard said that while James was "very nervous" while announcing the teams in front of about 100 fans at his first game a few weeks ago, his son "hit his stride" on Saturday during his second match at the mic. "He made it his own," Richard explained. "Everyone commented how amazing he was." He said his son's performance was akin to the emphatic style typically employed by boxing commentators during big fights. "Everyone, including his mum and me to be honest, was really pleased at how he seemed to take it in his stride, " Richard added. "He was in his element!" James said he found the experience "very good" and will appear behind the mic at Burscough's next match. "I've always wanted to do it and be a sports reporter," said the young teenager. "I got loads of compliments." To top it off, Burscough FC beat rivals Longridge Town 2-1. Listen to the best of BBC Radio Lancashire on Sounds and follow BBC Lancashire on Facebook, X and Instagram. Tennessee names Joey Aguilar starting quarterback after Nico Iamaleava transfer

Tennessee named transfer Joey Aguilar its starting quarterback on Sunday evening, three months after his arrival from UCLA to replace former Vols starter Nico Iamaleava. Aguilar, a two-year starter at Appalachian State, arrived in Knoxville in mid-May, about a month after Iamaleava's dramatic departure from Tennessee. Iamaleava landed at UCLA, where Aguilar had transferred in the winter. Aguilar re-entered the transfer portal the day after Iamaleava announced his commitment to the Bruins. Advertisement Despite arriving after spring football, Aguilar was considered the favorite to win the starting job at Tennessee because of his experience. Aguilar started 25 games in two seasons at App State and threw for 6,760 yards, 56 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. The other contenders for the job, redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and true freshman George MacIntyre, had a combined nine career pass attempts between them. Merklinger served as Tennessee's third-string quarterback last year; MacIntyre arrived this spring. Aguilar told The Athletic in July that when he initially transferred to the Vols, Tennessee coach Josh Heupel and offensive coordinator Joey Halzle made it clear that Aguilar was guaranteed nothing upon arrival. 'They told me I gotta come in here and compete,' Aguilar said last month. 'They have a good QB room already with George and Jake. I'm not coming in expecting to be the starter right away. Everywhere I've been, I had to earn the right to be the guy.' At the helm.@Jooey16_ | #GBO🍊 — Tennessee Football (@Vol_Football) August 18, 2025 After Tennessee's scrimmage on Friday — the Vols' second of preseason training camp — Heupel complimented Aguilar's command of the offense. 'I thought he handled himself extremely well (Friday),' Heupel said. 'I think he's gotten better from Day 1 up until (Friday's) scrimmage, really every single day. The comfort, the control, he's handled himself extremely well during our night walkthroughs, which is mental focus, mental sweat, and because of that, he's extremely comfortable in what we're doing right now.' This will be Aguilar's final year of eligibility, one he was granted after a blanket waiver that was extended to former junior college athletes after Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia sued the NCAA last year. Aguilar spent two seasons at Diablo Valley College near his home in California's Bay Area before getting to App State in 2023. Advertisement The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Aguilar is expected to be a good fit for the Vols' veer-and-shoot style offense. He was No. 60 in The Athletic's College QB Tiers rankings this summer and was 15th among the 16 SEC starters. 'He's got a cannon, so that will fit that offense perfectly, just taking the deep shots and all that,' said a Group of 5 recruiting director whose team faced Aguilar last season. 'He's a better runner than you think. And then he's got a tendency to turn it over a little bit. I think that's just because he's got such a strong arm and trusts it so much.' Tennessee needed a quarterback this spring after Iamaleava, the gem of Tennessee's 2023 recruiting class and the quarterback who helped the Vols to the 2024 College Football Playoff, missed an April practice amid contract talks as his camp sought a raise from the $2.2 million he was scheduled to make in the 2025 season. The Vols balked, and the next day, Heupel confirmed Tennessee was moving on without Iamaleava. Upon transferring to Tennessee, Aguilar agreed to a contract that's expected to pay him around $1.2 million, according to ESPN. The Vols open the season against Syracuse on Aug. 30 in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Spot the pattern. Nico Iamaleava episode ends with Joey Aguilar starting at Tennessee

The Nico Iamaleava NIL escapade at Tennessee ended up in, basically, a trade. Iamaleava left the program over a monetary dispute. He transferred to UCLA. And Aguilar transferred from UCLA to Tennessee. Aguilar had landed with the Bruins after transferring from Appalachian State. Now, Aguilar is the Volunteers' Week 1 starter, via Jake Trotter of He won the Tennessee job over redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger. Iamaleava is expected to win the starting job at UCLA. The situation arose when Iamaleava reportedly asked for more money to stay at Tennessee, and Tennessee refused. Iamaleava held out from spring practice, and Tennessee moved on.
