PETALING JAYA : Police have crippled a drug distribution syndicate based in the northern region following the arrest of three people in three separate raids across the Klang Valley and Penang on July 12.
Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the simultaneous operations by the Bukit Aman narcotics criminal investigation department also saw the seizure of a huge amount of heroin base and heroin, with an estimated total value of RM4.13 million.
He said police arrested the first suspect after intercepting a car parked by the roadside at USJ 19/4 in Subang Jaya, Selangor.
They found 14.52kg of heroin base and 920g of heroin hidden in a bag inside a specially concealed compartment behind the rear passenger seat.
'The next raid was at a house in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, where the second suspect was arrested and 22.55kg of heroin base seized from the premises.
'The third suspect was detained at an eatery in Permatang Pauh, Penang, which then led to the inspection of a nearby house where police discovered 7.456kg of heroin base,' Bernama quoted him as saying today.
Hussein said the suspect arrested in Penang is believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate, which had been active since early last year.
He said the mastermind sourced drugs from a neighbouring country and handed them to the other two suspects, who transported the drugs from Penang to the Klang Valley, earning up to RM4,000 a trip.
'Heroin base is the 'mother' of drugs, being the raw form that is later processed into various grades of heroin and sold at higher prices,' he said.
The first and second suspects have been remanded for five days starting July 13, while the third suspect is under a six-day remand.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.

Veteran journalist awarded six-figure payout in WhatsApp contract dispute

The sessions court has ordered Siva Kumar Ganapathy to pay journalist Frankie D'Cruz over RM200,000 for failure to honour promised editor's income and unpaid retainers. KUALA LUMPUR : The sessions court has ordered Siva Kumar Ganapathy, who claimed a Sarawak government mandate to launch a state election news portal in 2021, to pay journalist Frankie D'Cruz over RM200,000 for failure to honour promised editor's income and unpaid retainers. This sum, in compensation for four months' lost editor's income and unpaid retainers, underscores the binding force of their WhatsApp‑formed employment contract. Judge Halilah Suboh handed down the judgment on July 17, allowing all claims on the basis of the balance of probabilities. The judge accepted that a valid contract was formed via WhatsApp between Siva Kumar, purporting to head and D'Cruz for the editor position ahead of the 2021 Sarawak state elections. She noted that D'Cruz had turned down a competing offer from a Canadian media company in reliance on the defendant's assurances. The court also found that Siva Kumar expressly conditioned D'Cruz's appointment as editor upon acquiring a 3% equity stake in Double Solaris Sdn. Bhd. Relying on these assurances, D'Cruz paid RM39,585 to secure that shareholding, only to have the defendant subsequently renege on both the equity arrangement and the promised editorial role. Siva Kumar also appointed D'Cruz as a project consultant under his company, Asia PR Sdn Bhd, by letter dated August 22, 2019. The court directed Siva Kumar to remit RM129,640 to compensate for four months of lost editor's income (calculated at RM32,410 per month from February to May 2020), as well as RM21,000 in outstanding retainer fees for work performed between October 2019 and January 2020. In addition, the judgment provides for interest at 5% per annum from the date the suit was filed until full settlement, award of RM20,000 toward D'Cruz's legal costs, and payment of all court costs according to scale and practice. D'Cruz's counsel Haaziq Pillay hailed the decision as an affirmation that media professionals will not be left uncompensated for work and commitments made in good faith. He said the successful claim emphasises the enforceability of digital communications in forming binding contracts under Section 10(1) of the Contracts Act 1950.

‘Organiser failed to comply with syariah-related conditions'

PETALING JAYA: Spiritual intimacy and marital programme organiser eHati International Sdn Bhd had failed to fully comply with the syariah -related conditions issued during a previous clarification session in 2022, said Selangor Islamic Religious Department director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad. He said in a statement yesterday that the department had denied giving formal approval for the eHati programme. 'A clarification panel appointed by the department obtained an explanation from the organisers of the eHati programme following a complaint received from a participant. 'The complainant at the time alleged that activities contradicting syariah law had taken place during the programme.' The organisers were shown to have used a video demonstrating female 'self-pleasure' as a method to strengthen marital intimacy. The panel advised that such content must be removed, and any future programmes must strictly comply with syariah principles. The department also recommended that a disclaimer be included stating that the video content was meant solely for married couples. It emphasised that these recommendations did not constitute blanket approval for the entire programme. The department said the organisers failed to resubmit the complete programme module for review after the panel's guidance, effectively bypassing the vetting process. 'Had the organisers complied with the conditions set in 2022, the recent incident alleged to have occurred during the eHati programme at IDCC Shah Alam would not have happened.' The director also said the Selangor Islamic Religious Council is currently revising its guidelines on religious and spiritual programmes to ensure stricter compliance and clarity moving forward. Meanwhile, police have also launched an inquiry paper to identify any possible criminal offences under the Penal Code related to the programme. On July 13, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said statements would be taken to verify allegations, including claims that certain types of water used during the session caused hallucinations. The programme's founders Diyana Tahir and Rahim Shukor have been remanded for three days for investigation, along with four others who attended the eHati Love Intensive event, and allegedly removed their clothes during the session.
