Draper proud to be Indian Wells champ
For Britain's Jack Draper, his first Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells on Sunday was a moment of pride and joy but not, he suggests, a huge surprise.
The 25-year-old enjoyed an outstanding two weeks in the Californian desert, enjoying an upset win over Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals, after beating top Americans Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz.
In the final he defeated Denmark's Holger Rune in straight sets - a triumph which moved him into the top 10 for the first time in his career.
Asked what his main emotion had been in the aftermath of that triumph, Draper said: "I think big pride ... to be able to celebrate that with my team ... in tennis, there's lots of ups and downs, there's lots of adversity, especially for me over the years.
"I feel like I've been on a big journey with my team and the guys around me, and they've been incredibly supportive of myself," Draper said Wednesday as he prepared for this week's Miami Open in Florida.
Draper's Indian Wells victory was viewed as a surprise in many quarters but the player himself said he had felt an important win was increasingly within his reach.
"I feel like, I've been on a trajectory where I've been really consistent for a while, putting in great work, trying to really learn and grow, not only as a player, but also as a person off the court. And I feel like it's amazing," he said.
"That moment felt amazing, not because of the win and all that, just because, you know, the accumulation of all the hours spent, all the hard work, all the figuring out the problems and the things we need to improve.
"And to be able to celebrate that with the close people around me, my family, you know, that feels amazing," he said.
Turning point
Draper said his first tournament victory on the tour, in Stuttgart last June, had been a turning point in his confidence that he could reach the elite in the sport.
"I was a lot calmer because of that. I feel like that was something I needed to get over as a hurdle in my mind as a young player. When you come onto the tour, it's difficult. You're kind of in the changing room with all the players you've watched on the TV and you admire.
"I'm sure everyone feels that, you feel like you don't belong and then you're out on court and you're playing. But I think the more and more experiences I've got of playing big matches and winning against big opponents and all this sort of stuff.
"And obviously, semi-final of US Open and winning Vienna, all the accumulation of things, I think over time is helping me to believe more and more that I'm capable of, you know ... I don't know what I am capable of, I don't like to think too far ahead," he said.
With the distance of a few days, Draper is able to put Sunday's victory into context but he didn't try to hide the satisfaction it had given him and the extra boost to his self-belief.
"It definitely gives me more confidence and more inner belief than I had before.
"But at the same time, I've been sort of building towards this, I've been improving all the time at the back end of last year. I was on a really good run of form.
"I feel great about everything and I don't feel crazily different. I just keep up the hard work, keep on doing what I'm doing, and hopefully it keeps on coming together for me," he said.
Draper will start off his Miami Open bid on Saturday against either Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut or Czech Jakub Mensik.

Pak's WI tour may be reduced to T20Is
Pakistan and West Indies will play three T20Is and the same number of ODIs later this month. Photo: AFP/File Due to the West Indies Cricket Board's rigid stance, there is an increasing likelihood that the Pakistan tour will be limited to just three T20 matches. According to details, the Pakistan cricket team is scheduled to play three T20 Internationals against West Indies in the USA this August. Initially, the tour was also supposed to include three One Day Internationals (ODIs) in the Caribbean. Given the upcoming Asia Cup this year and the T20 World Cup next year, the PCB had requested the West Indies Cricket Board to convert the ODI matches into T20s. However, despite ongoing discussions, the host board went ahead and began selling tickets for both T20 and ODI matches. Further talks during the ongoing ICC meetings in Singapore failed to convince the West Indies board, which insisted on sticking to its original plan, saying, "We will not backtrack from what has already been announced." Due to this obstinacy, there's now a strong possibility that the ODI series will be scrapped, and the tour will be limited to just three T20 Internationals. An official announcement is expected soon. Sources revealed that the announcement of the Pakistan squad for the tour had been delayed due to this uncertainty. Once the situation is clarified, the squad will be announced. Most players from the recent Bangladesh tour are expected to be retained. It should be noted that the Pakistan-West Indies T20 matches are scheduled for August 1st, 3rd, and 4th. The host board had earlier announced ODI matches on August 8th, 10th, and 12th, but it will now have to issue a revised schedule.

Pak Champions can win WCL: Shahid Afridi
Pakistan Champions have a wonderful squad and the team combination is very strong, says Shahid Afridi. PHOTO: AFP Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi believes the Pakistan Champions are ready to go all the way in the upcoming World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 and clinch the title this year. The second edition of the tournament kicks off on Friday, July 18, at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham, with Pakistan Champions facing England Champions in the opening match. This season, Mohammad Hafeez takes over the captaincy from Younis Khan, who led Pakistan to the final in the previous edition. Speaking to a local news channel during a training session at Edgbaston, Afridi expressed faith in the team's abilities and praised the squad's depth. "We have a wonderful squad again. The team combination is very strong. Last year, too, we had a good first season, but this year we are hopeful of winning the tournament," Afridi said. "This time we have more young talent, and a new captain is leading them. Last year, Younis Khan did a great job; this year, we have Hafeez doing the honours. The aim is to have a new legendary cricketer from the past leading the Pakistan Champions squad," he added. The much-awaited Pakistan vs India clash will be held on Sunday, July 20, also at Edgbaston. Afridi acknowledged the intensity of the historic rivalry. "All the matches are important for us, but Pakistan versus India — those games always have a different vibe and excitement. I'm hopeful more fans will flock to the stadiums to watch us in action," he said. Team owner Kamil Khan also shared his confidence ahead of the tournament, saying the squad is motivated and ready to go a step further. "We came here with renewed passion and motivation for victory. We've got a strong team, but all the other teams in the tournament are also very good. We are hoping for a better second season of the WCL," he said. "The competition has grown since last year, and there is now a lot more fan following. The buzz is very good, and every match will be equally tough, regardless of the opponent," Kamil added. He highlighted the importance of having several all-rounders in English conditions and noted that the WCL provides opportunities to players still capable of representing Pakistan. "We have seasoned players like Imad Wasim, Asif Ali, Umar Amin, and Hafeez as our captain, accompanied by stars like Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik. Considering the conditions and fitness of the players, it's a very balanced squad with several all-rounders," he further added. "We are also providing a platform for those players who can still represent Pakistan but, for various reasons, are not currently on the PCB's radar – like Amir Yamin, who performed so well in the first edition too," he noted. Head coach Arshad Khan echoed the optimism, highlighting the team's mix of experience and match readiness. "We have several fresh legs in the squad this year, like Asif Ali, Hafeez, Umar Amin, and Rumman Raees, along with experienced players Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanvir, Sohaib Maqsood, and Amir Yamin," he stated. "Most of these players have recently been active in club cricket, and some have even featured in domestic cricket. Even our senior players are fully fit and in good shape. We also have some practice time before the first game, which will help us overcome any notable shortcomings," he concluded.

Three-time Grand Slam finalist Jabeur announces break from tennis
Three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur is taking a break from competitive tennis, the 30-year-old said in a social media post on Thursday. Tunisia's Jabeur, the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam final, has struggled with her form in recent months, failing to get past the third round of a major this year. The two-time Wimbledon finalist's campaign came to a disappointing end at the All England Club last month as she retired from her first-round clash against Viktoriya Tomova, unable to continue after a long medical timeout. The former world number two suffers from asthma and experienced breathing difficulties at this year's Australian Open. Jabeur, often called the 'minister of happiness' for her cheerful personality, said she was not feeling truly happy on the court. Sabalenka withdraws from US Open tune-up event in Montreal 'For the past two years, I've been pushing myself so hard, fighting through injuries and facing many other challenges. But deep down, I haven't truly felt happy on the court for some time now,' she said in a statement. 'Tennis is such a beautiful sport. But right now, I feel it's time to take a step back and finally put myself first: to breathe, to heal, and to rediscover the joy of simply living.' Jabeur, married to former fencer Karim Kamoun, has also been open about her wish to start a family. 'Thank you to all my fans for understanding. Your support and love mean the world to me. I carry it with me always,' she added.
