If somebody writes an epitaph to Sangita, it should be headlined 'Happy Soul'. Nothing fazes her. No challenge is too big. A fan of James Bond's 'never say die' spirit, just like him she thrives on adrenalin rush as she fields every curveball life throws her way. Sangita is a person with multiple disabilities. For the past 10 years, she has been whizzing past life in a wheelchair, notching professional milestones. She believes nothing is insurmountable, certainly not limitations imposed by disabilities. The history of Janpath is older than you or me. Older than modern Delhi itself, in some ways. Once the beating heart of Lutyens' Delhi, Janpath was more than a road—it was a rhythm. A pulsating, living artery of craft, culture, and commerce that brought together locals, domestic tourists, international backpackers, and curious drifters, all drawn to its kinetic charm. If Delhi was a body, Janpath was the nerve that lit it up.
The name Janpath—literally, The People's Path—wasn't just poetic branding. It was an ethos. In a city known for high walls, power corridors, and social silos, Janpath was democratic. You could be a diplomat's daughter or a first-time traveller with a shoestring budget, and you'd still end up sipping cold coffee from Depaul's and buying a pair of handmade earrings from a Rajasthani vendor who'd swear they were silver. Everyone bargained. Everyone lingered. Everyone returned.
Before it became Janpath, the road was part of Queen's Way during the British Raj, constructed as a ceremonial boulevard alongside the grand Central Vista. But while Rajpath (now Kartavya Path) stayed tethered to officialdom, its sister street—Janpath—broke free. It became the people's republic of small pleasures.
Each kiosk on Janpath was a time capsule of regional identity. Gujarat sent its mirrorwork. Kashmir sent its pashmina. Nagaland sent beads and cane. Rajasthan sent block prints. West Bengal sent terracotta. Everything that you'd otherwise need to travel the country to collect—Janpath brought it all to one crowded street. It was India's pop-up museum of the handmade, the homespun, the street-smart.
My association with Delhi—and with Janpath—is older than I am. My parents lived in Delhi in the '60s, and we returned each year during the school holidays. Some of my earliest memories involve the scent of sandalwood wafting through the stalls, the gleam of copper bells, the feel of cotton kurtis hanging loosely on metal rods, and the sound of languages—so many languages—mingling in the air. Later, as a student at Delhi University, Janpath became a ritual. A midweek escape. A happy place. We'd hop on a bus with 20 rupees in our pockets and the whole day ahead. Wandering. Laughing. Browsing. Then ending the day with a snack from a nondescript joint or a creamy cold coffee from Depaul's, which, like Janpath itself, seemed to never change.
Years later, as Managing Editor of India Now, the India Brand Equity Foundation's flagship publication, I had the chance to walk those lanes again—but this time professionally. I was reporting a feature story on legacy markets of Delhi and their role in India's cultural soft power.
Naturally, Janpath was on the list. I retraced my steps through the market, unearthing generational tales from each store. It was a walk down memory lane—with a journalist's notepad in hand.
Stories of a grandfather or great-grandfather setting up shop when the market came up, of ministers' wives and international dignitaries in search of 'authentic India', and of tourists from across the world came pouring out. It took me several visits to Janpath to piece their stories. I remember scribbling notes furiously while sipping Depaul's iconic coffee and thinking: this place deserves to be on the world map.
But something had already started to slip even then. The store owners also spoke of declining footsteps and revenue.
Then came the silence. Not the silence of nostalgia, but of absence. My sojourns to Janpath ended abruptly when I became a wheelchair user.
A broken footpath, a single step, a crowded walkway—these small obstacles become walls when you move on wheels. Inaccessibility crept in like a slow disease. Not because Janpath had changed all at once, but because the city hadn't cared to change with me. Delhi has always had a complicated relationship with accessibility—beautiful on the surface, brutal beneath it.
And yet, my love endured. Like many things in life, it became long-distance. I'd drive by Janpath just to feel close. I'd leave the engine running while my driver dashed into Depaul's for my regular. I'd sit parked illegally, scanning for traffic cops, heart swelling with the familiar noise and scent of that place. A fragment of a former routine—but one that kept the memory alive.
Because Janpath was still alive.
Until it wasn't.
I visited recently. I wheeled in with hope—and yes, I ended up shopping. I found those handcrafted juttis you never find online. I haggled over oxidized jewellery.
I tried on funky trendy and dirt cheap shades at the same stall I'd known all my life.
It was a hot, muggy day, but the joy was real. And I still ended the visit with a cold coffee, thick with nostalgia and slightly over-sweet.
But something had shifted.
The iconic bookstore in Janpath's cul-de-sac corner–now a closed chapter. Several stalls—gone. Whole sections—dusty, dirty and dead. Piles of garbage waiting forlornly. Janpath now wears decay like a borrowed coat.
The grit that once gave it character now just feels like neglect. What was once a wild, colourful jungle of creativity now feels like a museum no one curates. A place caught between its legacy and its future, waiting for someone to care.
A makeover is no longer a matter of taste—it's a matter of survival.
Because cities have short memories, and public spaces don't preserve themselves. Once lost, Janpath won't come back in the same form. And if we're not careful, we'll wake up one day to find it replaced by some sanitised arcade that sells nothing handmade, tells no stories, and caters to no one except global brands and real estate profits.
And accessibility? Perish the thought. Someone has attempted a tactile path—but it's as if the contractor installed it with their eyes closed. It winds awkwardly through the market—starting nowhere, ending nowhere. It loops awkwardly around obstacles, and ends in a dead end – a closed door literally. A tragicomic token gesture, more insult than inclusion. It's not just about wheelchair access; it's about dignity. About making sure everyone can participate in the city's pleasures.
We can wait a little longer for Sugamya Bharat. But can we at least get a Swachh Bharat in the meantime? Clean streets. Working drains. Thoughtful footpaths. Basic respect.
Janpath was never about perfection. It was about possibility. About bumping into strangers, discovering something unexpected, and walking away with more than you bargained for. It was—and still can be—a space where culture is lived, not just displayed.
Today, it stands on the edge.
Beloved Janpath, I rue your ruin. But I haven't given up on you yet. You gave us so much—memories, music, mayhem, and meaning. You were our informal embassy of Indian identity. A market of the people. A street of stories.
Thank you—for a happy day. For many happy days.
Nostalgia works like dopamine. But preservation works like love.
Let's show Janpath some. Before it's too late.

The economic calendar next week will be fairly light, with market participants to receive data on existing home sales, initial jobless claims, and S&P Global's flash services and manufacturing PMIs. The traders will also closely monitor Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell's speech at a conference for clues on the US central bank's monetary policy ahead. On July 21 (Monday), a report on US leading economic indicators for June will be released. On July 22 (Tuesday), Fed Chair Powell is slated to give opening remarks at a banking conference. On July 23 (Wednesday), data on existing home sales for June will be released. On July 24 (Thursday), separate reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended July 19, S&P flash US services PMI for July, S&P flash manufacturing PMI for July, and new home sales for June will be released. On July 25 (Friday), data on durable-goods orders for June will be released. Following companies are due to report second quarter results in the week ahead — Verizon, Domino's Pizza, Coca-Cola, Philip Morris, Lockheed Martin, General Motors, Alphabet, Tesla, IBM, AT&T, Blackstone, Honeywell, Intel, Nasdaq, Phillips 66, and Centene. US stocks ended mixed on Friday amid a Financial Times report indicating US President Donald Trump was pushing for steep new tariffs on European Union products. The report said the Trump administration was eyeing a minimum tariff of between 15% and 20% in any deal with the EU. The S&P 500 fell 0.57 points, or 0.01%, to 6,296.79, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 10.01 points, or 0.05%, to 20,895.66. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 142.30 points, or 0.32%, to 44,342.19. For the week, the S&P 500 added 0.59%, the Nasdaq gained 1.5%, and the Dow slipped 0.07%.

Industrials top-performing S&P 500 sector this year Defense stocks boost group; RTX, Lockheed among Q2 reports in coming week One-fifth of S&P 500 to report, including Alphabet, Tesla NEW YORK, July 18 (Reuters) - The industrial sector has led the way for U.S. equities during a topsy-turvy year on Wall Street, but its strength will be tested as earnings season heats up. S&P 500 industrials, which include aerospace companies, electrical equipment and machinery makers, transportation firms and building products companies, have gained 15% so far in 2025. That's the best year-to-date performance of the S&P 500's 11 sectors and more than double the gain of the overall index. Momentum for the industrials sector and the broader market will be in focus with a heavy upcoming week of second-quarter earnings, which includes reports from more than one-fifth of the S&P 500, led by Alphabet and Tesla, the first of the "Magnificent Seven" megacap tech and growth companies to report. The S&P 500 has surged 26% since April, as investors shook off fears about a recession which had stemmed from President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariff announcement. This earnings season "seems to be especially important because of the rebound that the market has had," said Chuck Carlson, chief executive officer at Horizon Investment Services. "I would think that that has built in a fair amount of optimism in terms of earnings." A number of industrials will be in the earnings spotlight as well. Aerospace and defense stocks have boosted the sector's performance this year, driven by heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine and fresh spending commitments by Germany and other nations. The S&P 500 aerospace and defense industry group has surged 30% this year. Defense companies to report in the coming week include RTX, Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics. GE Aerospace, whose shares have soared about 55% this year, raised its 2025 profit forecast on Thursday. Another industrial company spun off from legacy General Electric last year, GE Vernova, has seen its shares skyrocket over 70% this year, making it the best-performing industrial sector stock. The power equipment maker's results are due Wednesday. The push for reshoring infrastructure and expansion of artificial intelligence, which has lifted demand for cooling systems and factory automation, are two themes that have supported a number of stocks in the industry, including Eaton and Rockwell Automation, said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth Management. Another stock that has supported the industrial sector this year: Ride-hailing giant Uber, whose shares are up roughly 50%. "Unlike many non-Tech groups, there are a lot of solid stories here that don't rely on macro forces to deliver solid forward returns," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in a note on Wednesday. Large cap industrials still look attractive despite the group's recent run, Colas said. Indeed, while industrials have been viewed historically as closely tied to the fortunes of the economy, declines for a number of growth-cycle-linked stocks have weighed on the sector's performance. Shares of package delivery firms UPS and FedEx have posted sharp declines, while airlines including United Airlines and trucking companies such as JB Hunt Transport Services are also negative for the year. "There are economically sensitive (areas) within industrials that are not doing well," said Walter Todd, chief investment officer at Greenwood Capital. Other industrial companies slated to report in the coming week are Honeywell, Union Pacific and United Rentals. Beyond earnings, Wall Street will continue to focus on any developments on trade ahead of August 1, when higher U.S. tariffs on numerous trading partners are set to take effect. Investors will also be sensitive to news on the Federal Reserve, with Fed Chair Jerome Powell facing fresh pressure from Trump to resign as the president presses the central bank to lower interest rates. The Fed's next monetary policy meeting is July 29-30. The S&P 500 has climbed about 7% so far this year. The market has shown resilience despite "an incredible amount of uncertainty," said Eric Kuby, chief investment officer at North Star Investment Management Corp. "We continue to be surprised at how well stocks are trading given a lot of what would seem to be significant headwinds," Kuby said. Kraft Heinz split: Cold cheeses are a burden for its hot sauces

When schools returned to in-person learning in the fall of 2021 after the pandemic, parents scrambled to find Lunchables to put in their children's backpacks. Today, the meal kit of processed meats and cheese may be off the menu amid the desire for healthier food, but its manufacturer, Kraft Heinz, is firmly on it. The company is exploring spinning off the division that makes Lunchables, alongside Kraft cheese and Oscar Mayer hot dogs from its faster-growing arm that makes ketchup. A split could deliver modest value for shareholders. The biggest upside, though, would come from tempting bidders to pay up for each of the individual companies. To recap: Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and private equity firm 3G Capital acquired J.H. Heinz for $28 billion, including debt, in 2013. Two years later, they merged it with Kraft Foods, the US grocery business that had been spun out of what would become Mondelez International (more on that later). Also Read: Face the M&A truth: Mergers are glitter but grit is gold But Kraft Heinz has grappled with changing consumer tastes and, most recently, the rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. As sales have come under pressure, its shares have lost 70% since 2017. Little wonder then that the company said in May that it was 'evaluating potential strategic transactions" to boost its stock price. The logic for a split is straightforward. Kraft Heinz's sauces, spreads and condiments business, which generates annual sales of about $11 billion, is growing faster than processed meat and cheese. People are seeking more flavour in their food, particularly if their appetites shrink—either because they are getting older or taking obesity treatments. Freed from their more sluggish sibling, brands like Grey Poupon mustard and Lea & Perrins sauce could command a higher valuation multiple. There is a precedent here—ironically from Mondelez. After Kraft was spun off, Mondelez retained the sexier international, confectionary and snacking segments. It has delivered a total return of over 200% since October 2012, almost double the S&P 500 Packaged Foods Index, and trades at a forward enterprise value-to-ebitda multiple of about 15. Kraft Heinz's slower-growing grocery arm, which could have sales of about $14.5 billion, would be valued less generously. It would still be highly cash generative, though, so it could appeal to an investor looking for a steady dividend payer. Analysts at T.D. Cowen estimate that the sauces, spreads and condiments division could be worth $29.5 billion and the grocery arm about $25 billion. Together, that's only just ahead of Kraft Heinz's enterprise value of $51 billion. Also Read: To split up or not? Conglomerates should never go by off-the-shelf answers Given that much of the upside might be swallowed by the higher costs of operating both companies, why bother with a breakup? Because both companies might prove tantalizing to a bidder. This is exactly what happened in the case of Kellogg. The company spun off its North American cereals business as W.K. Kellogg Company in late 2023. The racier snack-foods arm, maker of Cheez-It and Pringles, was renamed Kellanova. Almost a year ago, Mars paid $36 billion, including debt, for Kellanova, a 44% premium to the share price in the preceding 30 days. Last week, privately held Ferrero International, maker of Nutella, agreed to buy W.K. Kellogg, whose brands include Froot Loops and Corn Flakes, for an enterprise value of $3.1 billion. The $23-a-share cash offer equated to a 40% premium to the share price in the preceding 30 days. Kraft Heinz's sauces, spreads and condiments arm would fit in McCormick's portfolio, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence told me, although there may be competition concerns. And now that Unilever is offloading its ice-cream business, might it be interested in bulking up in dressings? One complication is that Kraft Heinz is expected to have net debt of just over $18 billion at the end of this year, and much of that is likely to be allocated to the food maker. This might make it harder for a financial buyer to load up on borrowings. Still, if this hurdle could be overcome, there could be scope to add other low-growth but cash-generative food businesses to build scale. If both of Kraft Heinz's component parts are as successful in selling themselves as Kellogg's, this would certainly be a tasty treat for investors. Since news of Kraft Heinz potentially doing the splits broke at the weekend, there has been much discussion of de-consolidation in the consumer sector.
