Off the Grid: Sally breaks down USA TODAY's crossword, The Corporate Jungle (Freestyle)
Constructor: Ryan Mathiason
Editor: Amanda Rafkin
ENG (19A: Official language of Botswana (Abbr.) BOTSWANA is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It is located north of the country of South Africa. The capital of BOTSWANA is Gaborone. The official language of Botswana is English (ENG.) and the national language is Setswana.
URSA (32A: ___ Minor (constellation)) URSA Minor is a constellation consisting of seven stars, the brightest of which is the North Star, Polaris. In Latin, URSA Minor means "Little Bear," which is another name used for the constellation.
GIN (33A: Juniper-flavored spirit) GIN is flavored with juniper berries and other herbal ingredients. GIN was originally produced for medicinal purposes – as long ago as the 11th century – thus the addition of the medicinal herb juniper.
SEC (35A: Conference with LSU and Auburn) The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is a division in college athletics. The 16 members of the SEC include Louisiana State University (LSU), which is located in Baton Rouge, and Auburn, which is located in Auburn, Alabama.
BORN (44A: "A Star Is ___" (2018 film)) The 2018 movie version of A Star is BORN stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. It is the third remake of a 1937 movie of the same name that starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. The 1954 version of A Star is BORN starred Judy Garland and James Mason, and the 1976 remake starred Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.
ARGH (47A: Frustrated cry) and TSK (4D: Disapproving sound) and AHH (45D: Sound of relaxation) I'm calling this trio "the sounds of this puzzle."
HASHTAG (49A: Social media symbol that looks like a tic-tac-toe board) It occurs to me that this tic-tac-toe board symbol might be an age test. At various times # has been known as a number sign, pound sign, and most recently, a HASHTAG.
REBA (6D: "I'm a Survivor" singer McEntire) "I'm a Survivor" is a 2001 song by REBA McEntire. More recently, REBA McEntire has been a coach on the reality singing competition, The Voice, and stars on the NBC sitcom, Happy's Place.
RAN (9D: Completed a marathon) and RACE (56D: Marathon, for example) A nice pair of clues.
SIR (29D: ___ Purr (rhyming Panthers mascot)) SIR Purr has been the mascot of the NFL's Carolina Panthers since 1995. My cat, Willow, has been the mascot of my blog since I began writing it in 2020. It's too bad pictures don't have sound, because Willow was indeed purring when I took this photo.
BAN HAMMER (34D: Virtual "tool" used to boot unruly commenters from live chats) Isn't BAN HAMMER a lovely descriptive name for this virtual tool?
OH HENRY! (42D: Candy bar whose name ends with an exclamation mark) An OH HENRY! candy bar has peanuts, caramel, and fudge, and is coated in chocolate. The candy bar was invented in 1920, but there's no consensus about how it got its name.
LAOS (46D: Country whose capital is Vientiane) LAOS is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia. Its capital, as the clue informs us, is Vientiane.
In addition to the answers I've highlighted above, I also like these long answers:
FINGERS CROSSED (3D: "Let's hope!")
ESPRESSO MAKERS (14D: Gadgets used by baristas to brew strong, rich coffee)
THE CORPORATE JUNGLE (Freestyle): There's no theme today, as this is a freestyle, or themeless puzzle. The title is a nod to two clues:
MONKEY BUSINESS (15A: Mischievous behavior)
BEAR MARKET (54A: Down time for the S&P 500)
This is the type of freestyle puzzle that I would call "themed-ish." Although there's not a theme in the traditional sense of three to five long answers connected by some wordplay component, we do have a pair of answers that have a connection. Sometimes a pair such as this is referred to as an "apt pair." MONKEY BUSINESS and BEAR MARKET are common phrases where the first word is an animal's name, and the second word is a synonym for a corporation. Thank you, Ryan, for this enjoyable puzzle.

Maxie drops James off at the pool with Cody, then meets with Sidwell, who knows they're keeping quiet about Sonny's dirty money. Brook Lynn interrupts to talk to Maxie. Drew claims he can convince Scout that it wasn't her fault and orders Chase to arrest Danny. Chase says Scout came to the mansion of her own volition and won't waste time arresting Danny. Jason warns Drew not to come at him through Danny again. Chase warns Danny never to do something like this again, then warns Jason that this could have been much worse. Drew tries to appeal to Alexis, but she says he's taking things way too far. Drew says Jason taught Danny the rules don't apply which makes him a danger to Scout. Drew says Alexis should have called him the minute she knew Scout was at the mansion but instead kept him from her. He says he can't trust her, so Scout will have no more contact with anyone from her family. Josslyn watches Vaughn and Britt flirt with each other. She asks Pascal for the woman's name, but he just promises to break up the flirting and doesn't give her details. Pascal breaks it up and warns Britt there will be consequences for her actions. She says Josslyn needs to be extracted immediately but Brennan says she has proven herself. Josslyn and Vaughn argue about his flirting with Britt, but he says she's a long-term resident and he was working her for information. Josslyn says she knows her, and Britt is supposed to be dead. She says if Britt sees her cover is blown and the assignment compromised. Vaughn researches Britt online and the two decide she's involved in the cold fusion project. Dolly Parton gives Kelly Clarkson, Reba McEntire advice on coping with grief after Brandon Blackstock's death
Dolly Parton has some advice for Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire as they grieve the loss of Brandon Blackstock. The country superstar, who counts Clarkson and McEntire as friends, was asked during an interview with Entertainment Tonight about what she'd say to them about Blackstock's death – Clarkson was his ex-wife and the mother of his two youngest children, while McEntire was his former stepmother. "I think that you just have to be grateful for the years that you've had with someone, and you just try to remember the very best of all that," she said. "Take their energy that they had given you then, and you just kind of recycle that, and let that become a part of you. Just honor their memory and just know they're in a better place than we are these days." Parton, who is herself mourning her husband, Carl Dean, after his death earlier this year, said that she hadn't had a chance to speak with either woman yet, but that she has "love" for both of them. McEntire took to Instagram on Tuesday to pay tribute to her former stepson, who died on August 7. She posted a carousel of photos featuring her and Blackstock spending time together fishing, hugging and posing with a chicken. "Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God His struggle is over and he is in eternal peace in God's presence. There is no one else like him, and I'm thankful for the time we had together. His legacy and laughter will be carried on through his family. Rest in peace cowboy. Happy trails to you til we meet again." McEntire became Blackstock's stepmother during her marriage to his father, Narvel Blackstock, from 1989 to 2015. In that time, she was also stepmother to his two other children, Chassidy and Shawna, and despite them being her stepchildren, McEntire has always made it clear she considers them hers. "Brandon's been my son forever, it seems. Although he's my stepson, I still love him like he's my total — my blood," she told Entertainment Tonight in 2021. She had previously told The Boot in 2010 that she doesn't "consider Brandon, Chassidy and Shawna stepchildren." "There is no one else like him, and I'm thankful for the time we had together. His legacy and laughter will be carried on through his family. Rest in peace cowboy. Happy trails to you til we meet again." Blackstock died at the age of 48 after a private three-year battle with cancer. His cause of death was melanoma, a form of skin cancer. "Brandon Blackstock passed away peacefully at his home in Butte, Montana on August 7th under hospice care surrounded by his family," Silver Bow County Coroner Dan Hollis told Fox News Digital. Blackstock leaves behind his parents, siblings and four children: Savannah, Seth, River Rose and Remington.

ESPN's Laura Rutledge Wows Fans With 'NFL Live' Outfit
ESPN's Laura Rutledge Wows Fans With 'NFL Live' Outfit originally appeared on The Spun. This week is turning out to be a pretty memorable one for ESPN host and reporter Laura Rutledge. Rutledge started her ESPN career in 2014 as a SEC reporter. She was eventually named the host of "NFL Live" in June 2020. While she'll continue to host that show during the 2025 season, she'll also have to carve out time in her schedule for an elevated role on "Monday Night Football." It was reported on Tuesday that Rutledge will join Troy Aikman, Joe Buck and Lisa Salters for every "Monday Night Football" game this season. "Rutledge, now a two-time Emmy recipient as the host of NFL Live and reporting for SEC on ABC, has joined Buck, Aikman and Salters for marquee MNF regular season games and ESPN's Wild Card and Divisional playoff games for the past few seasons, sharing the sidelines with Salters more than a dozen times," ESPN's press release states. "In those same seasons, Rutledge was the sideline reporter with Fowler, Orlovsky, and Riddick for select MNF dual game weeks. This season, in addition to appearing on MNF each week, fans will continue to see Rutledge host NFL Live and SEC Nation on Saturday mornings." Instead of celebrating her promotion, Rutledge showed love to her "Monday Night Football" teammates. "Congratulations to Lisa who continues to set the standard in our business. Class, talent and professionalism personified," Rutledge wrote on X. "So excited for you two, Katie George and Peter Schrager." Just a few hours after landing this promotion, Rutledge hopped on the set of "NFL Live" to conduct her usual role. She wore a dress that clearly grabbed people's attention. "Goodness, Laura. You look amazing," one fan wrote on X. "Wow, Laura. Also congrats on the MNF gig," another fan said. "Ok Laura has definitely been in the gym. Great job," a third fan commented. It's safe to say Rutledge is a fan favorite at ESPN. Football fans will get to see plenty of Rutledge this fall due to her roles on "NFL Live" and "Monday Night Football." The NFL season officially begins on Sept. 4 when the Philadelphia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys.
