Tshwane launches new strategy to tackle GBV
The initiative was launched on May 28.
Led by the MMC for Community and Social Development, Palesa Modise, the initiative marked a turning point in the city's approach to GBV.
According to Section 79 chairperson for Community and Social Development, Rebecca Monchusi, the initiative addresses something South Africans have long demanded.
'It moves us away from symbolic condemnation towards co-ordinated, actionable prevention and intervention,' Monchusi said.
She emphasised that GBV is not a peripheral issue, so it must be recognised as a national emergency.
'We are losing lives daily. In the third quarter of the 2024/25 reporting year alone, over 11 700 rape cases were reported in South Africa – an average of 130 per day. These are not just numbers, they are shattered families, silenced voices, and broken communities,' said Monchusi.
She said that the multiparty initiative demonstrates the kind of proactive leadership that Tshwane desperately needs.
Monchusi added that for months, civil society has been calling for GBV to be declared a national disaster, demanding urgent and co-ordinated action across all spheres of government.
'This initiative tells of the commitment of the multiparty government of the City of Tshwane and has the potential to shift the national tone. This is no longer about waiting for top-down solutions,' explained Monchusi.
She said Tshwane is leading through action and the resolve of knowing that it is possible to respond with urgency, empathy, and strategy.
She highlighted the importance of this strategy being rooted in partnership between the government, civil society, communities, and survivors themselves.
'Tshwane must not only react to the violence once it happens, but it must also work to prevent it, support those affected, and transform the systems that have allowed GBV to persist unchecked,' said Mochusi.

Criticism of President's National Dialogue: A Missed Opportunity for Unity Image: X The President's planned 'National Dialogue' is being sharply criticised by civil society groups, who say it is 'neither national nor a dialogue' as it fails to unite the country. In an interview with IOL on Tuesday, Paul Maritz, Free SA Campaigns Director, contended the national exercise is neither truly national nor a meaningful conversation about the country's future. The organisation stated that divisions can only be overcome through honest dialogue and that the current format excludes entire sectors of society, including key political parties. 'South Africans must remain in constant conversation about our shared future. Unfortunately, in this case, the President's planned National Dialogue is neither national nor a dialogue in any meaningful sense. 'Entire sectors of society, including key political parties, were excluded from the outset. That makes this look far more like a PR exercise than a sincere, open conversation about where we are 30 years into democracy and how we move forward together,' said Maritz. Free SA expressed a pattern of disengagement from prominent foundations that had been expected to back the process. The Steve Biko Foundation, the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, the Chief Albert Luthuli Foundation, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation, the FW de Klerk Foundation, the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation, and the Strategic Dialogue Group have all withdrawn, casting a pall over what many hoped would be a more inclusive national conversation. The organisations cited violations of the dialogue's core principles and called for postponement to ensure adequate preparation, coherence, and participatory integrity. 'His withdrawal, or that of organisations he supports, would be a serious blow to the credibility of this process. If respected voices like his are not fully on board, ordinary citizens will rightly question whether this is worth their time.' The Democratic Alliance (DA), the country's second-largest political party and a governing partner in a national unity framework, is among the groups that have rejected the National Dialogue. Free SA assesses that if a ruling coalition partner cannot be won to participate, the broader public is unlikely to be convinced of the process's legitimacy. 'If you cannot convince your coalition partner to participate, how can you hope to convince the rest of the country? The process loses legitimacy without their involvement before it even begins,' Maritz argued. Meanwhile, The MK Party (uMkhonto weSizwe Party) has condemned the National Dialogue as an expensive political stunt, while services are collapsing nationwide. The party described the Dialogue as a Trojan horse for backroom political deals, bypassing Parliament, and granting the Presidency unchecked influence over policy-making without democratic oversight. 'This National Dialogue is a Trojan horse for backroom political deals, not a platform for genuine national problem-solving," the party asserted. The MK Party also highlighted what it calls urgent national failures that deserve attention before any dialogue can yield real progress. It pointed to a litany of service delivery and governance crises across several provinces, arguing that public resources are being diverted to political theatre rather than addressing urgent needs: Free SA and its critics argue that the National Dialogue risks becoming more about optics than addressing root causes such as poverty, inequality, and governance failures. 'From what we can see, it risks being nothing more than a political tool. It does not seriously address the root causes of poverty, inequality, and poor governance. 'A true national dialogue would require a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths and to make space for voices that may disagree with the President's vision,' Maritz said. IOL Politics

Old Mutual takes B20 to the people
At a time when the voices of ordinary citizens matter the most, Old Mutual is championing inclusive dialogue through its Add Your Voice campaign, an initiative designed to bridge the gap between global policy discussions and everyday South Africans. Central to this effort is the People's Podium, a platform that invites citizens from diverse backgrounds to share their perspectives on critical economic and social issues, ensuring their voices are heard in shaping a more equitable future. Borne out of a desire to encourage active citizenship during South Africa's G20 Presidency, the Add Your Voice campaign endeavours to promote inclusive dialogue, leading to inclusive growth. 'Guided by B20 South Africa's theme of inclusive growth and prosperity through global cooperation, we want to host and participate in discussions that address some of the world's leading economic challenges. The result is policy recommendations that are not only actionable but reflect the values of collaboration and inclusivity,' said Celiwe Ross, Director for Group Strategy, Sustainability, People and Public Affairs at Old Mutual Limited. The multi-channel, digitally led campaign coincides with and builds on Old Mutual's partnership with the B20 Summit. As part of the partnership, several members of the Old Mutual team will help guide discussions across four of the eight B20 task forces, ensuring that the talks feature localised input and perspectives. Envisioned as an open space that invites and champions the input of every South African, Add Your Voice gives people the chance to engage with B20 via popular social media platforms, supported by other channels to amplify as many voices as possible. People can share their experiences, both social and economic, their views on national policy and objectives, and their overall thoughts on how the country and leaders can best achieve them. At the heart of Old Mutual's Add Your Voice campaign is The People's Podium, which South Africans can engage with through relevant channels. The podium enables citizens to share their personal aspirations and definitions of progress, thoughts on how to combat the nation's systemic challenges, and visualise their economic future. 'The People's Podium is an explicit response to the need to bridge the gap between people and policy, eliminating the disconnect that many South Africans feel towards policy decision-making. Big, meaningful conversations are never and should never be limited to boardrooms or the corridors of power. We have an opportunity to hear directly from South Africans on what matters most to them,' Ross explained. The campaign will also feature a wide range of content that aims to amplify voices, educate audiences, simplify complex information, offer expert insights and position Old Mutual as an information bridge between ordinary South Africans and the B20 proceedings. Prominent content creator accused of allegedly sexually grooming a teenager

A Cape Town TikTok user and mother has alleged that her son had been sexually groomed by well-known content creator known as Lance D Richards. Prior to the incident coming to light, Richards shared a video on Instagram on July 27, saying that he will be taking a break from social media. Next Stay Close ✕ Reflecting on her journey which started during the pandemic, Linzy explained how the online world became a source of comfort for her. "Like many of us, I found comfort in online creators, people who made us laugh when the world felt heavy. This one man (Richards) in particular had a big following, was hilarious, relatable and human." She said their digital connection evolved into a personal relationship, and they eventually met in 2021. "Over time we connected, first online, then in a conversation, and eventually we built what felt like a real relationship. We shared stories, encouraged one another, and supported each other's platforms. I introduced him to my son, and in 2021 we met in person." She recounted, 'What started as online fun turned into inappropriate sexual messages sent to my teenage son.' She revealed that these interactions began subtly, often during drunken calls, escalating to sexual conversations that her son struggled to comprehend. "In the beginning, it was calls, especially when he was drunk, first subtle, then disturbing. My son didn't even know how to process it at that time; he thought maybe he (Richards) was joking, but it got worse. By the time my son was 19, the messages became explicit. "I have proof, screenshots and I will be sharing them because the truth matters. So why bring it here to TikTok? Because I met him on this platform and because he has a large audience who deserves to know the truth. I tried to handle this privately, but they weren't men enough to face me. Instead they tried to gaslight me." She said that Richards and his husband used her son's sexuality as an "excuse" for their alleged behaviour. "As if that justifies sexual harassment from a grown, married man ... Sexual orientation is not consent, being bi-sexual is not an invitation for grooming. My son was a minor when this began. This is sexual grooming," she shared. She said after months of prayer, she had decided to share this information on TikTok, but felt it was necessary to warn others about the dangers posed by someone with a large following. "Sometimes we wait to speak up when we feel safe and strong enough. My son lives in France now, making a case internationally has been difficult. More parts will follow because funny people can do dark things to and it's always the people you least expect. "When I found out I was shocked, angry and heartbroken ... This man knew my son was going through a hard time ... You would think he would have been supportive and encouraging, instead he crossed the line ... When my son told me what happen I didn't go public or blast it online. She ended by saying: "This was manipulation and it started slowly with calls, messages and grooming. My son never received an apology, no accountability." The mother then followed up by posting a number of screenshots of conversations which allegedly show Richards telling her son that he is "horny" and was "going to masturbate", among other conversations. The video has now gone viral, leading to various TikTok users adding their voice to the matter. Responding to one creator's opinion video, the mother replied: "💔💔Your words honestly brought me to tears. The love, the care, the strength you've shown - it means the world. Just a kindly correction I just want to share something important. My son isn't bisexual. The person who hurt him assumed he was, and when I confronted them, that was their excuse. "I told them straight: no matter your sexuality, no matter your orientation - there is never, ever a right to hurt someone. This is bigger than just our family. It's about respect, safety and the right to be who you are without fear. From the bottom of my heart - thank you for standing with us and see my son bravery ! 🙏" Lance D Richards has been contacted for comment and his comment will be added once it has been received. IOL
