Who was Bollywood's first graduate heroine? Worked with Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, was the first film star to endorse…, her name is…
The actress whom we are talking about inspired many people during her era. Bollywood's first heroine to complete her graduation was none other than Leela Chitnis. During her early days, Leela ventured into the film industry when the roles of heroines were limited. The divas were featured in the films to either attract the audience with their beauty or to portray emotional depth in demanding scenes. However, when Leela Chitnis entered Bollywood, she changed the dynamics of the roles offered to heroines.
How did Leela Chitnis's education have an impact on Hindi cinema?
Leela was the first actress to shatter such taboos of films, and it was through her that the Hindi cinema saw an image of an educated, self-reliant and sensitive woman for the first time. In her autobiography, 'Chanderi Duniyat', Leela revealed how she adapted to situations over time. Even before the great heroines like Nirupa Roy or Sulochana, Leela Chitnis was delegated to play the role of a compassionate mother on screen. Due to which she was honoured with the title of 'Duchess of Depression' and the first graceful mother of Hindi cinema.
Leela Chitnis was graciously presented on screen, her impact was such that the audience sitting on the other side of the room was swept away by her performance. Leela never gave up a moment to leave a lasting impression on the people; her roles were such finely played that the audience stood in awe of her. Not only that, Leela nailed the role of sacrifice and human dignity. Did Leela Chitnis transform her personality after becoming famous?
Leela Chitnis remained a down-to-earth person, despite her immense popularity in Hindi cinema. Leela never transformed herself. However, during her last years, Leela lived in an old-age home in America. Leela started living a life where there was no camera around her, and she died alone in the darkness of anonymity. How did Leela end up becoming a heroine?
In her autobiography, 'Chanderi Duniyat' it mentions every detail about Leela Chitnis. Starting from her birth, family, her first meeting with her husband in college. She was born on 9 September 1909 in Dharwad (present-day Karnataka) in a Marathi Brahmin family. Her father was an English professor, and this family environment made her conscious of education. Leela Chitnis was married at a young age. She went abroad with her doctor husband. She gave birth to four sons. Later, when she got divorced from her husband, she returned to Mumbai.
After coming to Mumbai, Leela again started working in a school. But she had the responsibility of four children, and it was difficult to make ends meet. It was during such times that she started Marathi theatre. Through her plays and films, she raised questions on casteism, the status of women, and social pressures. Did Leela fail as a director and producer?
Despite this, Leela made her presence felt as an extra in films, and she struggled and became an actress. Then came films like 'Kangan', 'Bandhan', 'Jhoola', where she appeared as a modern, self-reliant woman opposite Ashok Kumar. In the films of that time, her character spoke, thought, and fought. This was a new heroine who was showing a mirror to society by going beyond flowers and saris. Many may not know this, but Leela tried her luck in directing and producing films; eventually, she failed at it.

The author Russia sentenced: 5 detective novels by Boris Akunin
Boris Akunin carved his literary legacy with detective novels set in imperial Russia, works that made him one of the country's most beloved authors. Now, the same pen has made him a wanted man. A Russian military court sentenced Akunin in absentia to 14 years in prison for voicing support for Ukraine and criticising President Putin's rule. Writing under the pen name Boris Akunin, Grigori Chkhartishvili redefined crime fiction for a post-Soviet readership. His most famous creation is Erast Fandorin, a Russian detective with Japanese swordsmanship. These mysteries are filled with conspiracies and the menace of unchecked power. That's what has made his books beloved by readers and threatening to those in power. Here are 5 detective novels that brought Boris Akunin global fame and continue to be relevant today. This is where the game begins. A promising young student shoots himself in a public park in 1876 Moscow and no one seems particularly surprised. Except for Erast Fandorin, new to the force and already too perceptive for his own good. A puzzling suicide turns into a tangle of clues. A photograph of a mysterious woman, an English orphanage, a will rewritten just before death. A whodunit that shows how easily one life can fall apart. A single question can echo across continents- what really happened? Fandorin is just trying to understand a world that doesn't always make sense. And that hunger for truth is what makes Boris Akunin's detective truly unforgettable. A mansion in Paris. Ten bodies. One golden whale shaped key. The trail leads to the Leviathan, a luxury steamship sailing to Calcutta, and now a crime scene at sea. Among the suspects are- a secretive doctor, a relic obsessed aristocrat and a Swiss woman with secrets. Also aboard is none other than Erast Fandorin, unbothered by the waves or the rising body count. A locked-room mystery. And a floating theatre of suspicion, where manners mask murder and every alibi is rehearsed. Claustrophobic and tightly plotted. A must-read for locked-room mystery fans. The city is dressed in gold and expectation. Moscow prepares for the grand coronation of Tsar Nicholas II and that's when chaos strikes. The heir to the throne is kidnapped. A deadly ransom demand follows. Then enters Erast Fandorin, who must solve this mystery. A case of abduction that quickly turns into a critique of power and corruption. With time slipping away, Fandorin races against court politics and cold-blooded villains to rescue the future of Russia. Trains, spies, ninjas and a double life across continents. In 1905, Fandorin races to stop Japanese sabotage along the Trans-Siberian Railway. Bombs tick and war hangs heavy in the air. But the real origin of this conflict is decades earlier. We rewind to 1870s Japan. A younger Fandorin arrives in Yokohama. He learns swordplay, earns scars, meets Masa and uncovers a murder. This case quickly takes a turn into betrayal and heartbreak. Past and present collide in a gripping finale that bridges two eras and reveals what truly forged Erast Fandorin. War is chaos. But in Akunin's hands, even the battlefield becomes a chessboard. In 1877, amid the Russo-Turkish War, Erast Fandorin is sent to the front, undercover and still recovering from past wounds. His mission is to unmask a saboteur tipping the war's balance. He's joined by Varvara Suvorova, a journalist with no love for empire or for men like Fandorin. But when her fiancé is accused of spying, she's forced to rethink everything. As ideologies blur, so do the loyalties drawn in war. A taut, slow-burn mystery where alliances shift like the frontlines. (The writer is an intern with

Pawan Kalyan Refuses To Promote His Film Hari Hara Veera Mallu
Pawan Kalyan won't promote Hari Hara Veera Mallu due to political commitments, says producer AM Rathnam. Directed by Krish Jagarlamudi, it releases July 2025 on Amazon Prime. Actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan will reportedly not participate in the promotional campaign for his long-delayed film Hari Hara Veera Mallu, producer AM Rathnam has confirmed. The announcement comes as the period action drama, directed by Krish Jagarlamudi, gears up for its theatrical release in July 2025 after multiple postponements. Pawan Kalyan, who currently serves as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, is expected to remain occupied with political commitments in the coming months. During a recent press interaction, Rathnam clarified the actor's absence from the promotional events, especially those targeting pan-India audiences. 'Please watch the film to enjoy, not just to find mistakes. This film is made for the audience. Pawan Kalyan is busy with other commitments and won't promote the film in Hindi and other languages," Rathnam stated. The film, which has been in production for several years, recently cleared the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) process and was granted a UA certificate. Its final runtime stands at 2 hours and 42 minutes. No major changes or cuts have been requested by the board, signaling a smooth clearance ahead of release. Meanwhile, the film's digital rights are already locked with Amazon Prime Video. The OTT deal was signed earlier, but sources indicate that the makers faced pressure from the streaming platform to confirm a release timeline. Reportedly, Prime Video had warned of revising the terms of the agreement if the film didn't meet a firm deadline by the end of July. Any further delay, the platform hinted, could lead to a reduction in the originally agreed financial deal. Despite the setbacks, Hari Hara Veera Mallu remains one of the most anticipated Telugu releases. Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1 – Sword vs Spirit (tagline: Battle for Dharma) is an upcoming Telugu-language period action-adventure film, set against the backdrop of the 17th-century Mughal Empire. The film is directed by Krish Jagarlamudi and A.M. Jyothi Krishna, with a screenplay by Jagarlamudi and Sai Madhav Burra. The story follows the journey of the legendary outlaw Veera Mallu, played by Pawan Kalyan. The cast also includes Bobby Deol, Nidhhi Agerwal, Nargis Fakhri, Nora Fatehi, and Satyaraj in key roles. Announced in January 2020, the film began principal photography in September that year, primarily in Hyderabad. However, it faced multiple delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Pawan Kalyan's political responsibilities. Filming finally wrapped up in May 2025. The music has been composed by the renowned M.M. Keeravani. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Abusive, defamatory, or illegal comments will be removed.
