In many areas, the Volvo XC60 has aged very gracefully, and it is still quite competitive in several key areas.
It looks great on the outside and its interior can just about keep up in some areas with more modern rivals while also maintaining impressive levels of comfort and practicality.
Ride improvements made throughout its life are apparent, so you could say that XC60 has found its place as a comfortable car that doesn't over-excite its driver, rather cosseting them.
Yet the engine range is beginning to let this car down and may yet do so rather more seriously.
The clock is now ticking for the XC60. This was Europe's best-selling PHEV in 2024, and right now it continues to have plenty of laid-back, rational appeal.
But 'more of the same' will only take this car so far. Unless Volvo is keeping back a meaningful update for its hybrid system, it'll likely lose a lot of its on-paper allure when the time for mandatory homologation under stricter Euro 6e-bis emissions regulations comes.
While its rivals get younger and younger, then, and better prepared for the next era of emissions compliance, Volvo's popularity champion could start to look very old very quickly. It may always be a sound, mature choice but perhaps not such a smart one as once it was.

French firm teams up with JetZero on hydrogen-powered flight
PARIS, Aug 20 (Reuters) - A French technology startup unveiled plans on Wednesday to work with clean-aircraft venture JetZero to explore a potential hydrogen-powered variant of its futuristic all-wing design. The move by SHZ Advanced Technologies is likely to rekindle a debate over the potential for zero-emission flight, six months after Europe's Airbus ( opens new tab put the brakes on plans to develop the world's first hydrogen-powered airliner. California-based JetZero aims to challenge the traditional duopoly of Airbus and Boeing (BA.N), opens new tab by developing a so-called blended wing-body aircraft, which it claims will be able to cut fuel consumption - and therefore carbon emissions - in half. JetZero and SHZ now plan to work together under a NASA research programme to design systems capable of storing and distributing liquid hydrogen fuel, which could eliminate carbon emissions altogether and evolve into a variant of JetZero's Z4. Hydrogen is prized for its carbon-free emissions and high energy related to mass, which makes it lighter than normal fuel. However, it also takes up much more volume and must be cooled to -253 degrees Celsius, making storage a significant challenge. JetZero's blended wing-body design features a V-shaped fuselage that acts as a wing and reduces friction in the air, rather than the familiar wings and cylindrical fuselage. "Due to the wider fuselage, the airframe is far more compatible with (liquid hydrogen) fuel tanks without sacrificing passenger seating, as a 'tube and wing' airplane would," SHZ Advanced Technologies said on Wednesday. Airbus said in February it was slowing down efforts to produce a hydrogen-powered regional plane and dropped a target date of 2035, blaming a lack of supporting infrastructure. Boeing, by contrast, has been cool on the commercial viability of hydrogen flight altogether. The concept of a blended wing-body design has been around since the 1940s and led to the U.S. B-2 bomber, as well as the X-48 research project between Boeing and NASA some 18 years ago. JetZero is revisiting such designs as the aviation industry struggles to meet a target of net-zero emissions by 2050. Airbus has argued that combining such radical changes to the shape of a plane with an entirely new propulsion system would be too ambitious, and is focusing instead on hydrogen-based fuel cells inside a normal tubular aircraft configuration. But SHZ Advanced Technologies' co-founder Eric Schulz - a former senior executive at Rolls-Royce (RR.L), opens new tab and Airbus - said JetZero would approach the task in two phases with the initial focus on a conventionally powered all-wing plane. Any hydrogen-based variant would come in a second step, he told Reuters. The French firm says it has developed hydrogen tanks that save space by avoiding the usual cylindrical shape needed for pressurised vessels and can fit more easily into the flowing contours of the Z4's fuselage. JetZero, whose backers include United Airlines (UAL.O), opens new tab, said in June it was on track to fly a full-scale prototype of the revolutionary 250-passenger airplane in 2027.

VAUXHALL have given fans something to sink their teeth into with a bold new look for the Corsa. The iconic hatchback, one of the nation's most beloved small cars, has been unveiled in a bold new form. 4 4 The British firm, which is part of Stellantis, recently joined the Gran Turismo franchise - the world famous series known for allowing gamers to race everything from regular family motors through to supercars and even concepts. Vauxhall are to use the platform to show off the new Corsa GSE Vision - which is set to debut at the Munich Motor Show in September before being available to drive and race in the game. But while most concept cars are bizarre and, in some cases, a little silly, this one truly serves as a vision of the all-new Vauxhall Corsa supermini that's due to arrive in 2027. This bold look is simply the car's potential high-performance GSE iteration and takes the form of a three-door hatchback with quite a few extravagant design elements. That includes staggered 21 and 22-inch wheels within huge wheelarches and the 'Vizor' design at the front, as well as new lighting to create a cross-like design. Naturally, for a souped up concept design, there's also an outrageous air intake and bonnet vent, as well as a roof-mounted wing and enormous rear diffuser. The rear sees a clean and simple glazed tail that leads into an illuminated Vauxhall badge and a lightbar. The cabin is also rather futuristic and purely conceptual, with a yoke-style steering wheel and a head-up display, including back-lit fabrics for driver information such as blind-spot warnings. Powered by electric, of course, the concept boasts impressive performance details with two electric motors - each producing 400bhp - to combine for 800bhp and 800Nm of torque. It's also extremely lightweight at 1,170kg, enabling acceleration from 0 to 62mph in just two seconds with an eye-popping top speed of 199mph. Mark Adams, Vauxhall's chief designer, explained the concept's role in introducing the GSE brand. He told Auto Express: 'We wanted to build this because introducing the GSE brand in the right way, it was important to put the vision here first. 'But it then happens that following hot on the heels of this is a real first production car. "It's not exactly the same as this, but then it's the first of several to come.' While the dual-motor layout is purely conceptual, the car uses the Stellantis SLTA-S platform, set to underpin superminis and SUVs. A production GSE Corsa is expected - but will likely feature a single-motor front-wheel-drive layout, much like its label-mate the Peugeot 208 GTi.

Ferrari chief admits he and Hamilton 'stupidly' underestimated challenge of new partnership
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has admitted he and Lewis Hamilton underestimated how difficult finding success during the Brit's first year with the Prancing Horse would be. Hamilton, 40, has often cut a frustrated figure since leaving Mercedes - where he won six of his seven Drivers' Championships - earlier this year. He's struggled to emulate the form he showed at the Silver Arrows since joining his new team however, even failing to notch a single podium with a best finish of fourth place on three occasions. Vasseur, Hamilton's new chief principal, has now speculated as to why the pair's working relationship is yet to flourish. 'Lewis and I, we collectively probably underestimated the change of environment and the fact that he spent for me 20 years in the same team,' he told The Race. 'McLaren and Mercedes, and then he moved to Mercedes, an English team, same engine guys, that same culture and so on. 'So he spent 2006 to 2024, 18 years, in that same environment and then he arrived at Ferrari, and we were stupidly expecting that he will have everything under control. 'He's not the guy who changed team every two years. 'Culturally speaking, there is a bigger difference between Ferrari and Mercedes than between Mercedes and McLaren. And this we underestimated.' Hamilton's struggles on the circuit have often resulted in him venting his frustrations to the media post-race, the most recent example of which occurred in Hungary. After qualifying just 12th on the grid, the legendary driver described his performance as 'useless', even claiming that Ferrari should look for a new driver. Such outbursts were criticised by Vasseur in an interview earlier this week. He told German publication Auto Motor und Sport: 'Stay calm. 'Build on the fact that he has already taken the first step. Don't let things like what happened in Budapest get you down. 'Lewis is very self-critical. He is always extreme in his reactions. Sometimes he is too hard on the car, sometimes on himself. He wants to get the most out of himself and everyone in the team. 'You have to calm him down and explain to him that in Q2 [in Hungary] he was only a tenth of a second behind the driver [Leclerc] who later took pole position. That's no big deal. 'The message he sends out only makes things worse. 'Most of the time, he's only that extreme with the press. By the time he comes into the briefing room, he's usually calmed down again. That's just his way.' The Formula One season is currently in the middle of a summer break - with Hamilton sitting a lowly sixth place in the race for the title and a whopping 175 points behind Oscar Piastri. The F1 season returns with the Dutch Grand Prix - with race day on August 31 as Piastri looks to extend his advantage at the top of the standings over McLaren team-mate Lando Norris.
