
Sophy Roberts hosts talk at Sherborne Travel Writing Festival
It's the third year Sherborne Travel Writing Festival has been held in the town, hosting award-winning writers in talks for more than 200 guests.The event means a lot for Sophy, who has decades of experience in the industry."Just because my work takes me far away doesn't mean I'm not without my anchors in community, that's why I like this festival," she explains."I find the audience is so engaged, passionate, curious. It makes you feel good about this shared curiosity for what lives beyond our very pretty Dorset."Sophy says it is also important to her as it is an opportunity for her loved ones to gain some insight into her life. She continued: "For them to be able to be in the room, in a talk that immerses them in the life I have been pursuing for five years, it means a lot to me."
Authors speaking at this year's festival, which runs until Sunday, include Ann Morgan, Barnaby Rogerson, Kapka Kassabova, Xiaolu Guo, Jonathan Lorie, Alexander Christie-Miller, Mevan Babakar and Horatio Clare.This year's event will also see the launch of a £10,000 travel writing prize for a published British or European author. Sophy, who will be talking at the festival at 19:00 BST, said the prize is "exciting recognition for the genre", acknowledging the cost of travel writing."[It] is really high, one way of doing it through a book advance but that money runs out really quickly."
Despite the expenses sometimes associated with travel, Sophy feels it is an exciting and "challenging" time."It's really important to question a genre that's colonial in its bones. What's happening now is a very exciting recalibration of that privilege, with new and diverse voices."Understanding places we're not from, cultures we don't belong to, politics we don't understand - whatever it might be - this is a space where those connections occur through the written word."

Celtic Champions League trek doesn't have to be an issue as former Aberdeen hitman reveals rock star luxury ride
Aberdeen made the same trip to face Kairat Almaty a decade ago - and Adam Rooney remembers the first class transport that came with more than a whiff of showbiz. Adam Rooney recalls Aberdeen splashing out on the Rolling Stones' old private jet for their Almaty jaunt to Kazakhstan. The Dons ultimately got no satisfaction from that 9000-mile round trip a decade ago. But Rooney fancies Celtic to rock back onto European football's biggest stage when Brendan Rodgers' side make the same journey in the Champions League play-off next week. Aberdeen lost 2-1 away to Kairat in a Europa League qualifier back in 2015 - after spending a reported £200,000 on the chartered flight - before tumbling out after a 1-1 draw in the return leg at PIttodrie. Celtic face the Kazakhstani champions in a £40m showdown for a glitzy league phase spot with the first leg in Glasgow on Wednesday before making one of European football's longest journey's the following week. It comes after Kairat won a nerve-shredding penalty shoot out against Slovan Bratislava to book their play-off spot. Scottish sides have never won in seven attempts on Kazakh soil - including the Hoops losing 4-3 to Astana eight years ago. But Rooney says there will be no excuses for Celtic should they fail to get what they want over two legs. He told MailSport: 'You get used to flying across Europe in big games but that one was something else. It was a good old journey, alright! 'To be fair, we were okay with Aberdeen because for the European trips a lot of the sponsors used to fund the flights. We used to sell a lot on the corporate side. 'Some of the sponsors would then travel on the plane with the team. So we used to get some fairly nice planes, to be honest with you. 'I'm pretty sure we had the Rolling Stones ' old private jet for that trip. The company that used to organise the trips had some big names. They said the one we had for that journey was one of the Stones' old jets. 'I'm not really a fan, they're a bit before my time! But when I heard that it still made me think 'wow'. 'You could tell it would suit that kind of company because it was top quality. Nice and spacious with those big lounger seats that face each other like on a corporate bus. 'The planes weren't always like that! We had some good chartered flights but that was a particularly nice one. 'Of course, I'm sure Celtic would rather be going to Bratislava, just logistically it's an awful lot closer. 'More so for the fans because you can't expect many of them to travel over to Kazakhstan. 'But the players, especially some of the lads in the Celtic team, might be involved in international set-ups and stuff that so they're used to travelling further abroad anyway. 'The journey obviously takes a bit out of your legs and stuff, but I think it's more of a mental thing. 'If you can get a good sleep, which if you're on decent planes and the hotels are alright, I think you're fine. 'It's not like you're sitting crammed on a Ryanair flight for eight or nine hours!' Aberdeen fell 2-0 behind early on in the 24,000 Almaty Ortalyk Stadium before Kenny McLean pulled one back in the second half to give Derek McInnes' side hope. Rooney, now player/assistant manager of Hereford alongside former Celtic midfielder Paul Caddis, was a half time sub and remembers the mid-summer heat in Kazakhstan being uncomfortable but nothing that should make a huge difference. Celtic's second leg is due to kick off at 5.45pm UK time - 9.45pm in Kazakhstan - which could pose further logistical issues for the Hoops. But Rooney said: 'Because of the time difference, we tried to stay on British time. 'We worked our meals and stuff like that as if we were still on a UK time and just adapted kick-off time to that. 'The heat wasn't too bad. Listen, Scotland is a sweatbox for me, I'm ginger and white! 'Celtic will be prepared, I'm sure. Going abroad it's hard to actually work out the levels. 'Sometimes you can get led into a false sense of security and think, 'oh, these actually don't look that great'. And you turn up and they're very sharp and they're technically very good. 'So it is difficult to try and get a feel for when you're playing the different countries and different levels to actually get a feel for what kind of standard they are. 'I'm sure the lads at Celtic are a lot more adapted to it when playing in the Champions League qualifiers. 'They'll just want to look after themselves and make sure they play to their capabilities.' Rooney's fellow Irish striker Adam Idah has come under pressure from Hoops fans whose frustrations have been multiplied due to Parkhead chiefs failure to replace Kyogo. But Rooney said: 'I've thought Idah has looked okay, he's a real handful and he's an international striker. 'Listen Celtic are going to dominate the ball domestically and there's a different level of expectation due to the quality of strikers they've had over the years. 'That demand is there to have the X factor. Kyogo had that I suppose. 'We all have barren spells but the difference at Celtic is you are going to get three or four chances a game. 'If you're not taking them that's when the confidence might go. 'But I'm sure Adam is more than capable of scoring 20 goals again this season. He just needs to keep believing because he clearly has the talent. 'I saw a bit of Johnny Kenny playing in Ireland last season. He is quick and direct and the manager at Shamrock Rovers spoke really highly of him. But he'd need a bit of time if he was to be Celtic's number one striker.'

North Wales café bar perfect for 'leisurely lunch' with posh Welsh rarebit

In just a few months this chic new venue in the centre of the charming little North Wales resort has established itself as a versatile destination, offering a selection of mostly classic British fare, with some surprises from other countries, that can be eaten in house or taken away. Customers can indulge in everything from hearty breakfasts, brunch, salads, sandwiches, cakes and pastries to special Friday and Saturday night wood fired pizzas that sell like the proverbial hot cakes! There are veggie, vegan and gluten free options and dietary needs are catered for. Portions are generous, the atmosphere is laid back and prices are affordable. Delicious freshly prepared food in a spacious and inviting setting – Social really delivers - as my former hotelier friend Nerys and I found when we popped in for a leisurely lunch. I had taken the precaution of booking a table- a wise move, for when we arrived just after midday, the place was already busy with couples, groups and ladies who lunched, tucking into attractive looking platters of food and obviously enjoying themselves. The brainchild of husband and wife team Jon and Tessa Turner, who come from a well known local catering family, Social opened last March in what had been a branch of Nat West Bank and most recently Johnny Dough's pizza bar. Since then it has gone from strength to strength, remaining open until 8pm for the popular weekend pizza evenings. King of the kitchen is classically trained chef Tom Durkan, who has worked at Watsons Bistro in Conwy and on Disney cruise ships. Nerys and I liked the smart new decor that was an attractive mix of modern style and practicality. Comfortably seating more than 32 people at well spaced wooden topped tables, the ground floor café was spotlessly clean, bright and airy with cream painted walls, distinctive lighting and greenery on the window sills. Mega sized photographs of underwater scenes taken by Tessa's cousin in Australia highlighted the exposed brick wall at the far end of the room. With my friend's car safely parked in the street nearby, we got down to the serious business of deciding what to eat and drink from the extensive a la carte menu. Available until noon, the breakfast menu offered toasted crumpets, freshly baked croissants, poached or scrambled eggs on toast and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on crumpets with chopped cornichons. Served until 3pm, brunch/lunch dishes included full Welsh breakfast, avocado on sourdough, homemade welsh rarebit, a fruity breakfast bowl and even sriracha benny ie poached eggs with a spicy sauce that originated in Thailand . From noon onwards customers can also order cakes and pastries, sandwiches, including the famous New York deli and salads such as classic Caesar, honey glazed goats cheese, tofu and smoked salmon. Affrogato, burnt Basque cheese cake and luxury Welsh ice cream provided a sweet finish. Star attractions on Friday and Saturday evenings are the homemade wood fired pizzas. Vegan cheese is available at no extra cost. Eight different choices priced between £11.50 and £15.95 include classics such as margherita, pepperoni and Hawaiian as well as more unusual spicy beef, truffled mushroom and nduja calabrese piccante, topped with a fiery Italian salami. Licensed for alcohol, the drinks list features beers including artisan Nokota IPA from the Llandudno based Wild Horse Brewery, as well as lagers and cider. Also available are gins, alcoholic and mock cocktails, alternative milks, soft drinks and a carefully chosen selection of international red, white and rose wines sold by the glass from £5.50 for 250ml or bottle from £25. The most expensive vintage – an exceptional Australian red shiraz- was priced at £39. (Image: Social) As Nerys was driving, she selected a bottle of alcohol free Peroni lager and I opted for a latte coffee that went down well with my choice of a house favourite - Welsh rarebit. Priced at £10.95 this, however, was an upmarket version that came on two slices of toasted sourdough bread, topped with pieces of roast ham and finished with chilli jam. Piping hot, rich and creamy, the savoury sauce was given a real kick with a generous slug of Wild Horse Nokota beer. I could have added a poached egg for an extra £1.75 but the dish was fine as it was and went down a treat. Full marks to chef Tom! Nerys went for classic Caesar salad with lots of crisp green leaves and homemade parmesan and sourdough croutons tossed in a tangy dressing. Adding warm pieces of chicken breast for an extra £3.50 transformed the salad into a substantial main course. (Image: Social) 'Absolutely delicious, but far too much for me, I just can't manage it all," Nerys commented sadly. However, customers often take their leftovers away with them and our very helpful server provided my friend with a takeaway box so she could finish the dish at home. Social has a real "feel good" vibe that makes eating and drinking there a pleasure. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at this delightful new café bar and plan a return visit in the near future to sample the pizzas. One for the notebook? Most definitely!
