Teenage girls died ‘holding hands' in school ball car crash

Telegraph08-05-2025

Two teenage girls were laid next to each other 'holding hands' after they died in a car crash on their way to their school-leavers' ball, a court has heard.
Kiea McCann, 17, and Dlava Mohamed, 16, died after the car they were travelling in crashed into a tree in County Monaghan, Ireland, on July 31 2023.
Anthony McGinn, 61, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, which led to the girls' deaths.
He also pleaded guilty to causing serious bodily harm to Auin Mohamed, Dlava's sister, who was also in the car but survived the incident with severe injuries.
McGinn was put in a 'position of trust' but ignored the girls' pleas for him to 'slow down' as he raced at nearly double the speed limit in a 50mph zone, Monaghan Circuit Court was told.
His white BMW then veered off course and smashed into a tree at around 75mph in the Legnakelly area, killing Kiea and Dlava, who were best friends.
'Everything went black'
Oisin Clerkin, who was sitting in the front seat, said he urged McGinn to slow down but he did not respond, the court heard.
'He was driving really fast and it scared me. None of the girls said anything. Kiea looked scared. I said 'Goodbye' to Kiea and I woke up in hospital,' Mr Clerkin told the Gardaí (the Republic of Ireland's police force) in a statement.
Family and friends of the two girls were shown footage of the moments after the crash when McGinn was arrested.
He admitted that he had 'no answer' for his actions and said he did not know what speed he had reached.
After the footage was played, Kiea's father shouted at McGinn in court.
Kiea's mother, Teresa, told the court how she had 'trusted' McGinn to take her child to the ball.
'When we got to the scene, Kiera was already gone. Her dad tried CPR on her. Nothing would bring her back,' she told the court.
'Kiea and her best friend were robbed of their lives. They were put side by side holding hands on the grass as me and my husband lay beside them.'
Ms McCann then revealed that her daughter's 18th birthday present was her headstone.
Frankie, Kiea's father, described his daughter as a 'gift from God' and described the tragedy as a 'death sentence' for their family.
Dlava's father, who migrated to Ireland from war-torn Syria, said his daughter's dreams had died with her and said he wanted 'justice, not revenge'.
Recalling the crash, Dlava's sister Alva said she had told McGinn to 'stop' before 'everything went black'.
McGinn was seriously injured in the incident and had shown remorse by apologising to the victims' families, Breffni Gordon, his defence lawyer, told the court.
He also lost his job, income and his relationship with his wife and children.
Sentencing will take place on May 14.

Man serving 8 year sentence for rape jailed for another 3.5 years after admitting sex act with teen

A man who is serving a sentence for raping a woman in Limerick City has been jailed again after he pleaded guilty to engaging in a sex act with an underage teenage girl in Limerick. Cristian Gogosiou, (40), of Mount Kenneth Place, Courtyard, Limerick, had a four-year sentence reduced to three years and six months, after he admitted one count of 'defilement' of a child under the age of 17, at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court. Advertisement The girl, who was 15 at the time and who cannot be identified to protect her right to anonymity, had run away from home and was living in hotels and staying with friends. Judge Colin Daly said the girl came into contact with Gogosiou while she was staying in a hotel in Limerick on July 5th, 2020. 'At the time, the accused knew she was only fifteen years old,' Judge Daly said. The judge, who lifted reporting restrictions on identifying Gogosiou, said the Romanian man agreed to drive the girl to one of her friends' homes if she performed oral sex on him. Advertisement Gogosiou drove himself and the girl to a car park where the girl performed oral sex on him, it was heard. Afterwards, the girl told her mother what had happened, and they both went to a garda station to make a complaint against Gogosiou. Judge Daly said: 'He (Gogosiou) knew her young age, he knew she was vulnerable, and he took advantage of her.' The girl wrote in a victim impact statement that her mental health and her relationships with her family and a former boyfriend had suffered because of what happened. Advertisement Judge Daly said that a headline sentence of four years was appropriate, which he reduced to three and a half years. The judge said: 'He is a 40-year old Romanian national, he has a partner and a child, he has been in Ireland for 10 years and he has a history of employment, he co-operated with gardaí.' Gogosiou was also added to a national register of sex offenders for an indefinite period. Judge Daly said Gogosiou had a previous conviction last July for two counts of raping a woman, who at the time was homeless, on the streets of Limerick in 2019. Advertisement Gogosiou, who had denied rape and oral rape at his trial before the Central Criminal Court, was sentenced to ten years with the final two years suspended after a jury found him guilty on both counts last July. Gardaí told the trial that the woman, who cannot be named to protect her right to anonymity, was struggling with addiction and homelessness at the time. The victim told investigating gardaí that she encountered a man in Limerick city who asked her for sex in return for €6,000 and jewellery. The woman said the man took out a flick knife and threatened to 'cut off her giblets' before he raped her in an alleyway. Advertisement Gardaí pursued Gogosiou for a year and finally apprehended him in September 2020. He admitted he had sex and oral sex with the woman, but he claimed the victim offered to have sex with him for money. Gogosiou's trial heard that during interviews with gardaí following his arrest, he had said he liked to prey on vulnerable women 'because it was easy'. Gogosiou, who had 37 previous convictions, did not accept the jury's verdicts, the court heard. The sentencing judge, Ms Justice Siobhan Langford, said that aggravating factors in the case included Gogosiou's use of the knife as well as his defence that the woman had sex with him for money - a claim dismissed by the jury. Pre-excavation work to begin at former mother and baby home in Tuam

Pre-excavation work on the site of a former mother and baby home in Tuam will start on Monday. Daniel MacSweeney, who leads the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam (ODAIT), said families with relatives who were in the Co Galway institution have already been informed of the timeline of work. Advertisement He said they will have an opportunity to view the site works as part of a family and survivors' day in the coming weeks. The excavation is part of efforts to try to identify the remains of infants who died at the home between 1925 and 1961. ODAIT has been encouraging survivors and family members to visit the site before excavation starts on Monday, as the site will be under forensic control and cannot be open to the public once work begins. Mr MacSweeney said: 'From the start of works on June 16, the entire site, including the memorial garden, will be accessible only to staff carrying out the works and 24-hour security monitoring will be in place. Advertisement 'The initial four weeks will involve setting up the site, including the installation of 2.4-metre hoarding around the perimeter. 'These measures are necessary to ensure the site's forensic integrity and to enable us to carry out the works to the highest international standards that govern the excavation and recovery programme. 'This is a unique and incredibly complex excavation.' It is expected the work will take approximately two years to complete. Advertisement

BREAKING NEWS Schoolboy, 14, who pleaded 'I don't want to die' after being fatally stabbed was being chased by two teenagers while on his way to play football, court hears

A schoolboy who pleaded 'I don't want to die' after being fatally stabbed was being chased by two teenagers while on his way to play football in the park, a court heard today. Ibrahima Seck, 14, was fatally attacked near the Fairway Inn pub, in New Moston, Manchester, at around 5pm on Sunday. After three boys - two also aged 14 and one aged 16 - were charged with his murder, a court heard that Ibrahima - described by his family as 'funny, caring and hardworking' - was fatally stabbed after slipping to the ground. All three accused appeared in the dock today at Manchester Magistrates' Court where they each also faced a charge of possessing a bladed article. None can be named due to their ages. One of the 14-year-olds and the 16-year-old were first brought into court for brief hearings, giving their names and addresses. The younger boy - wearing a grey tracksuit - was watched by his aunt and uncle who sat alongside lawyers. The older boy, who had his mother and a social worker in court, wore a blue tracksuit. Rebecca Macauley-Addison, prosecuting, gave a brief outline of the charges to magistrates. She told the court Ibrahima was on his way to play football with his brother and friends in a local park in New Moston when he was stabbed. There was an alleged altercation after he was approached by two of the teenagers, she said, and then chased a short distance. Ibrahima was stabbed after slipping to the ground, she said, and died from a single stab wound to the chest. Ibrahima was pronounced dead just under an hour after the stabbing. Magistrates remanded both boys into secure youth detention, the 16-year-old's mother leaving the courtroom wiping away tears. The other 14-year-old was then brought into the dock, wearing a grey tracksuit. His mother and father were also in court for the brief hearing where he too was remanded to secure youth detention. All three will next appear at Manchester Crown Court tomorrow. A 37-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl who were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have been released on bail pending further inquiries. After the attack, Ibrahima ran to a nearby home before collapsing in the doorway and telling the occupier: 'I've been stabbed'. The traumatised resident added: 'He just kept saying: "I don't want to die".' Paying tribute to Ibrahima, his family described him as 'funny, caring and hardworking'. 'Ibrahima was a well-liked young boy,' they said. 'He was funny, caring, and hardworking. He was our best friend, and he looked after me. 'He was so smiley and always made everybody laugh. He was a good boy. 'The killers have killed two people - me and my son. 'Why would anyone do this to him? He does nothing wrong. My family want justice.' Since then dozens of bouquets of flowers have been placed on the ground near the pub outside which Ibrahima was stabbed. On one a message read: 'Rest in Power young man. Your family will miss you as the world will.' Another said: 'To Ibrahima, a beautiful boy. Our hearts go out to you and your family in this time of deep sorrow.' Earlier Detective Chief Inspector Tony Platten, of Greater Manchester Police, said : 'The last 48 hours has seen an extensive amount of police work, which has seen multiple officers working to help get the answers Ibrahima's family deserve. 'Now that we have secured three charges, a new level of proceedings is active, and we will continue to work on our investigation as this progresses. 'Ibrahima's family remain at the forefront of our minds and we will be remaining in close contact with them throughout the process.' Officers are looking for information, doorbell or dashcam footage, or eyewitness accounts from anyone in the area at the time, quoting log 2250 of 08/06/2025.
