Cheers star George Wendt's hidden Ted Lasso link as fans spot eerie tribute

Daily Mirror20-05-2025

Actor George Wendt, who starred in the beloved Cheers TV series, has passed away at the age of 76, and he has a famous Ted Lasso nephew he's sadly leaving behind
George Wendt, the legendary actor who has sadly passed away at the age of 76, is related to a major Ted Lasso star.
The actor, who was best known for his role as Norm Peterson in the iconic sitcom Cheers, died peacefully in his sleep at his home, his family confirmed.

A representative told the Hollywood Reporter: "George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time."

During his notable career, the American star delighted viewers on Saturday Night Live, portraying Bob Swerski, one of the fervent superfans often seen crowding around Coach Mike Ditka's diner, passionately rooting for "Da Bears."
He also boasted an impressive back catalogue of film appearances, gracing screens in Dreamscape (1984), House (1985), Fletch (1985), Gung Ho (1986), Plain Clothes (1987), Never Say Die (1988), Guilty by Suspicion (1991), Forever Young (1992) and the pop culture hit Spice World (1997).
But away from work, George spent time with his doting family, including his wife Bernadette Birkett and their three children: Hilary, Joe, and Daniel. He also leaves behind his nephew, Jason Sudeikis, who plays the lead role in the hugely popular TV series Ted Lasso.
While appearing on an episode of the Still Here Hollywood podcast, George gushed over his pride for his famous nephew. The Cheers star shared: "Proud especially, you know, not only of the success, but he's solid. Have you read profiles and stuff? I mean he is such a mesh, so smart, so thoughtful. I mean, it all comes out in the show. Right?"
Marked by heartbreaking coincidence, the news of George's death comes precisely 32 years after the last episode of Cheers graced our television screens. With a run of 275 episodes under his belt, the actor garnered six Primetime Emmy Award nods for his beloved role as the beer-chugging regular, Norm.

On X, formerly Twitter, tributes poured in from fans mourning their favourite TV bar patron, with one writing: "George Wendt, beloved for his role as Norm on Cheers, has died at 77. With a beer in hand and a heart of gold, he made millions feel like regulars. A true legend of TV comfort and comedy."
Another wrote: "Rest in peace to George Wendt, responsible for Norm Peterson, one of the most iconic sitcom characters of my lifetime. Cheers big guy. Rest easy."
A third also shared a touching tribute: "RIP George Wendt. You were a big part of my childhood and the impact you had on society was positive and substantial. We are sad to see you go, but know you will be in a better place. Thanks for the laughs."

Celtic star Alistair Johnston aims cheeky dig at Kevin Bridges as he announces first American tour

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AFTER two-and-a-half years in Glasgow, Alistair Johnston is well-versed in Scottish slang and has had plenty of time to master the accent. But the Celtic right-back has warned comedian Kevin Bridges that he shouldn't expect the same from all North Americans. 2 Kevin Bridges is heading across the pond this year 2 Alistair Johnston won't be able to catch the comedian in his home city Credit: Kenny Ramsay Celtic-daft Bridges, 38, will head across the pond in September after announcing his first ever American tour on Saturday. Bridges will kick off the tour in Moncton, Canada on September 3 and will finish in Los Angeles on October 18. He's booked in for 20 shows across North America - 11 in Canada and nine in the USA. And the final night in Canada will take place in Johnston's home city, Vancouver, on September 21. The Canadian won't be able to attend the big night given the new football season will already be in full swing by then. Some of his friends and families could be, though, but Johnston admits many people will need subtitles to understand the legendary Scot's routine. Sharing a video on social media as he announced the big news, Bridges wrote on Instagram: "My first ever, EVER America and Canada tour on sale next week…Dates released on Monday." Johnston couldn't help himself as he replied: "🤣🤣 subtitles will be required." The Canadian, 26, wasted no time before trying to learn the Scottish lingo after he arrived in Glasgow in January 1. Just one month after joining he took to social media to reveal he was "taking Scottish lessons" - by watching Still Game. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up Earlier this year, he even revealed that he's tried Irn Bru - but it's not his drink of choice. He told Celtic TV: "I don't mind it. "I'm not going to say I'm a huge fan of it. "If I was to drink it, I'd have to say I need to drink it out of the can because I've seen a couple of people pour it into a glass and when you see the colour of it, it looks like something you'd put in your car." Beyoncé giving away free concert tickets to London shows after 'poor sales'

Beyoncé fans might be flocking to watch her perform in London this week, however free tickets are now being 'given away' to fill seats. Last week the US superstar, 43, kicked off the UK leg of her Cowboy Cartertour at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on June 5, the first of six shows she's playing in the capital. The concerts are her first in the UK since her Renaissance World Tour in 2023, however she's failed to sell out any of them this time around. But two shows in, it's now been reported that organisers are so desperate to fill empty seats, tickets are being handed out. Tickets for her shows began at around £100, with some VIP tickets being sold for as much as £950. Although thousands of fans did snap them up, with the stadium having a capacity of 60,000, there are still hundreds of tickets in 75 sections left for her remaining four shows. The Sun has now reported unsold tickets have been distributed to charities, to also avoid the stadium looking empty. 'Several low-income families in the capital have been offered tickets by food banks, which help feed the needy,' it reported. It comes after some fans were left furious at the amounts they paid for tickets, only for prices to later be slashed. During the presale, some had been priced at £620, but were then made available for £141.60. A Ticketmaster spokesperson told The Sun: 'Since tickets typically go on sale at least three to six months before the event, organisers may review prices at key points leading up to the show.' Just a few days before the tour began, ticketholders were also left 'annoyed' at a last-minute change of plan. Posting on X, one fan shared a notification they got from the Ticketmaster just four days before the first Cowboy Carter concert in California, informing them their seat had changed. 'Due to changes in stage production, your original seats for the Cowboy Carter tour will now have an obstructed view. 'The event organised has accommodated you with new seats in a comparable location on the floor. 'Your new tickets are in your Ticketmaster account now; your original tickets are no longer valid for entry.' In 2018 tickets for Beyoncé's joint tour with her husband Jay-Z were given away in a car park outside Hampden Park in Glasgow after they also struggled to sell out. Revealing the giveaway on Twitter, one fan told others to rush down to the venue you get a ticket: 'If you are near Hampden Park go to the main parking lot they are giving out free tickets for the Beyoncé & Jay Z concert because of empty seats.' Other fans also claimed they were being given free upgrades to VIP. Despite Cowboy Carter not selling out in London, Beyoncé's 40-song set has been praised by fans. More Trending In Metro's review, the singer was praised for a 'presenting a version of the American South not as it is, but as it could be: inclusive, textured, full of contradiction and pride, defiant of unjust power structures, and rooted in the stories of people who refused to disappear – no matter how hard the world tried to erase them.' 'It was a goose-bump-inducing pleasure to watch the icon strut the length of the stage and flip her hair, so when she joined in the choreography, it felt like staggering generosity from a star with nothing left to prove,' it also read. After starting in Inglewood, California, in April, the Cowboy Carter tour is scheduled to end on July 26, in Paradise, Nevada. Metro has contacted Ticketmaster and representatives for Beyoncé for comment. Got a story?
