Eight believed to be part of robbery gang in Penang arrested
GEORGE TOWN: Police believe they have solved 25 cases of armed robbery, house break-in and theft at self-service launderettes after a man was shot dead in Bayan Lepas.
The 35-year-old suspect is believed to be part of a group responsible for the crime spree, which resulted in losses estimated at RM500,000.
Following the 4.15am shootout yesterday, eight other people, including a woman, were picked up at several locations across the state.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said four of the eight arrested had criminal records, adding that all the suspects were remanded to facilitate investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960 for possession or carrying a firearm and ammunition without licence or permit.
'With the arrest, we have successfully solved 25 cases of robbery, house break-in and launderette theft in Penang, with total losses and damages amounting to RM500,000,' he said.
Before the shootout, a team from the state Criminal Investigation Department was on a crime prevention patrol when they came across a luxury car along Jalan Lintang Bukit Jambul, Bayan Lepas.
'The patrol team approached the car and identified themselves to the driver. He alighted from the car and started shooting at the police vehicle.
'The policemen were forced to open fire in self-defence. The man died at the scene,' he said, adding that the body had been sent to the Forensics Department at Penang Hospital.
Comm Hamzah said the man had a record of 19 criminal offences and 15 drug-related crimes.
A search of the man's car yielded an FNP-45 pistol with three bullets, a steel bar, two wooden sticks, two machetes, 22.5g of methamphetamine, a signal jammer, housebreaking tools and clothing.

Unable to go out with girlfriend, senior citizen sets care centre on fire
The centre housed 20 senior citizens and the fire was believed to have started from the kitchen cupboard area before spreading to the main hall. A care centre in Kaki Bukit, Perlis, caught fire and is believed to have been set by one of its elderly resident. The centre houses 20 senior citizens, and the fire is believed to have started in the kitchen cupboard area before spreading to the main hall. PADANG BESAR – A senior citizen, who is also a resident of a care centre in Kaki Bukit, allegedly set the shelter on fire on Thursday after reportedly being dissatisfied with his caretaker. Padang Besar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Shokri Abdullah said police received information about the incident at around 8.31am through the Padang Besar District Police Headquarters operations room via the MERS 999 hotline. He said the centre housed 20 senior citizens and the fire was believed to have started from the kitchen cupboard area before spreading to the main hall. 'The fire damage is estimated at 50 per cent, mainly affecting the hall area. 'Initial investigations found that the suspect was unhappy because he was not allowed to go to Kangar to get a hearing aid together with his girlfriend, who is also a resident of the centre,' he said in a statement on Thursday. He added that the Fire and Rescue Department and the Forensics Unit from the Perlis Police Contingent Headquarters assisted in the investigation. However, he said the total losses were still under investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, which carries a prison sentence of up to 14 years and a fine, upon conviction. More Like This

Government enforces Penal Code amendments to combat bullying in Malaysia
PUTRAJAYA: The government is coordinating the enforcement of Sections 507B to 507G of the Penal Code to reinforce that bullying is a criminal offence. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated this was a key discussion during today's Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The move follows recent bullying cases, including the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Fahmi quoted the Prime Minister as saying, 'The government will not tolerate bullying in any form or allow such cases to continue without accountability.' Ministries overseeing education and student dormitories are aligning efforts to implement the amended provisions, effective since July. Fahmi emphasised, 'We want every ministry to fully understand that under these amendments, bullying is clearly defined and legally recognised as a criminal act.' He spoke after attending the 20th Majlis Amanat Perdana Perkhidmatan Awam (MAPPA XX), which gathered over 30,000 civil servants in person and online. The Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code amendments, passed in December 2024, target all bullying forms, including cyberbullying. Fahmi also noted the Prime Minister's concerns over disrespectful behaviour by certain individuals and public figures. Anwar reportedly warned that authorities would take action against such conduct. During MAPPA XX, the Prime Minister highlighted civil servants' role in maintaining peace and national progress. Fahmi said, 'The Prime Minister delivered several important messages, including how much of the progress we're enjoying today is the result of bold changes and reforms.' He welcomed Anwar's announcements on public service improvements, calling them a relief. Fahmi added, 'More major announcements for civil servants are expected, Insya-Allah, during the tabling of Budget 2026 on Oct 10.' - Bernama
