However, the mystery of how close the Red Sox came to landing Ryan is still an intriguing one, as it also comes with potential ramifications for the coming offseason.
On Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN provided the ultimate "what if" for Red Sox fans, asserting that the team's pursuit of Ryan nearly paid off.
"Boston came close. The Red Sox were willing to part with a number of high-end prospects to land right-hander Joe Ryan from the Minnesota Twins," Passan wrote.
"But that wasn't expressed until the deadline was nearing, and the Twins were so deep in other talks to disassemble their roster, the prospect of moving Ryan had lost appeal."
Passan's report coincides with another report from WEEI's Rob Bradford, which stated that Boston had made each of their top three prospects available (shortstop Franklin Arias, outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and left-handed pitcher Payton Tolle), though not all in the same package.
As much as it hurts now for the Red Sox to have missed on Ryan, the fact that they were willing to push their limits could well pay off this winter, when a trade might be easier to come by without the pressure of the deadline tilting the market in the favor of the sellers.
