Prison officer had cupboard fling with inmate she 'proper fell in love with'

Daily Mirror13-05-2025
Morgan Farr Varney, from Doncaster, began a 'physical and romantic relationship' with an inmate at HMP Lindholme - and was caught on CCTV sneaking into a cupboard with him
A female prison guard has been jailed after being caught sneaking into a cupboard with a male prisoner she was having an affair with. Morgan Farr Varney, from Doncaster, began a "physical and romantic relationship" with an inmate while working at HMP Lindholme.
After suspicions were raised by colleagues, CCTV footage uncovered during a prison anti-corruption investigation showed Farr Varney entering a cupboard with an inmate at the prison, and loitering with him on a wing. A search of the inmate's cell then led discovery of a tranche of love letters, with more found during a search of Farr Varney's bedroom.

Farr Varney - who appeared on ITV's This Morning last year to complain of her issues with an online dentistry service - was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office in January 2023.

In an interview, told officers she "proper fell in love" with the inmate, and said she was worried that she had "f****d" her life up. After being released on bail, Farr Varney quite her job at the prison, with the inmate transferred to another prison.
But their relationship continued, and police officers later found more photographs of Farr Varney on the inmate following his move to HMP Wealstun in West Yorkshire. Farr Varney pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office at Sheffield Crown Court on April 16 last year, and was remanded in custody.
On Friday, she was sentenced to 10 months in prison. South Yorkshire Police's Detective Constable Scott Jarvis, who is part of the force's Prison Anti-Corruption Unit and was the officer in charge of the case, said: "We take any reports of improper relationships between prison staff and inmates incredibly seriously and conduct thorough investigations to ensure those who are guilty of these offences are brought to justice.
"These types of relationships are thankfully rare, but when they do happen, they threaten to undermine the reputation of the prison service and other hard-working prison officers who abide by the rules and regulations attached to the job.
"Staff at HMPPS Counter Corruption Unit supported us throughout our investigation and I want to thank them for their cooperation.

"I hope this sentencing sends out a clear message to any prison officers thinking of committing similar offences that if you engage in this type of criminality, you will be investigated by police and you will be brought to justice."
Recent data meanwhile showed that a record number of female prison guards have been dismissed for having affairs with male inmates.

A total of 29 female officers were sacked for the offences in the last three years, a huge rise on the nine recorded between 2017 and 2019.
In January, a former prison officer who was filmed having sex with an inmate was sentenced to 15 months in jail.
Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, was working at HMP Wandsworth when she entered the cell of a prisoner and had sex with him in June 2024.
The encounter, filmed by another inmate, later went viral on social media, and she was arrested by the Metropolitan Police a few days at Heathrow Airport during an attempt to flee to Spain.

Man who investigated Shannon Matthews case describes moment he realised the truth

The search for Shannon Matthews, nine, became a major missing person police operation and, after several weeks, she was found at an address in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire A man who investigated Shannon Matthews ' disappearance has revealed the moment he knew the girl's mum Karen was the person behind it all. ‌ Richard Edwards, who was a local reporter at the time, appeared on This Morning yesterday to talk about his involvement in the case which saw a huge missing person police operation launched for the girl. She was found at her mum's then-boyfriend Michael Donovan's house in a plot to claim a £50,000 reward, and both Karen and Donovan were prosecuted and jailed. ‌ The search lasted 24 days in February and March 2008, during which time people on the estate near Dewsbury, West Yorkshire eventually became suspicious of Karen. It dawned on Mr Edwards himself Karen could be responsible when a man approached him - as he worked late on the estate one evening for a local newspaper - and pointed at Karen's house, insisting she had known along along where Shannon was. ‌ Speaking to Emma Willis and Andi Peters on the ITV This Morning sofa yesterday, Mr Edwards said: "There was one particular night where to this day I've never known who this person was. It was a Sunday night, a few days before Karen was arrested... "A car pulled up on the estate, I was working, it was late on the Sunday, it was dark and a guy got out and he said 'Where's that Richard Edwards from the Yorkshire Evening Post?' ‌ "I thought I've done something to offend this fella, but I need to front up. I said 'That's me'. He came over, he was right at the end of Mooreside Road and he pointed towards the house, he went 'She's done it. She's known where that little girl has been all along.' "Then got into the car and drove off and I thought right... that was weird. That was on top of the other stuff I'd been hearing. And then three days later she was arrested." The mum would later be charged with child neglect and perverting the course of justice. She was jailed for eight years after a jury found her guilty of those offences. But Mr Edwards still to this day - 17 years on - does not know who the man who approached him was. The journalist continued: "If he's watching this and wants to get in touch with me just to explain who he is and just clear up that tiny little outstanding part of the story. I would love to hear from him because he didn't tell me who he was, but he was right. He was right." Donovan was also jailed for eight years after the trial at Leeds Crown Court, after which he was convicted of kidnapping and false imprisonment. Donovan died of cancer in hospital at the age of 54 last year.

British Army in Kenya: Some soldiers using sex workers despite ban, inquiry finds

An investigation by the British army has found that some soldiers stationed at a controversial base in Kenya continue to use sex workers despite being banned from doing at the British Army Training Unit Kenya (Batuk) used sex workers "at a low or moderate" level, a report said, adding that more work was needed to stamp out the investigation covered a period of more than two years, examining conduct at the base dating back to July was commissioned in October 2025 following an investigation by British media outlet ITV into the behaviour of soldiers at Batuk, including allegations some army personnel were paying local women for sex. The ITV documentary followed previous concerns raised about Batuk after the death in 2012 of a local woman Agnes Wanjiru, allegedly killed by a British soldier stationed at the then a string of allegations have been made about the conduct of troops at the training site, which lies near the town of Nanyuki 200km (125 miles) north of Kenya's capital Chief of Defence Staff Gen Sir Roly Walker said in a statement that the army was committed to stopping sexual exploitation by those in its ranks."The findings of the Service Inquiry I commissioned conclude that transactional sex is still happening in Kenya at a low to moderate level. It should not be happening at all," he said. "There is absolutely no place for sexual exploitation and abuse by people in the British Army. It is at complete odds with what it means to be a British soldier. It preys on the vulnerable and benefits those who seek to profit from abuse and exploitation," he service inquiry investigation was carried out over more than two years by a panel of four people, including two serving officers, a civil servant and an independent investigated the behaviour of troops stationed at Batuk and assessed the army's systems to prevent breaches of its regulation JSP 769 which bans soldiers from paying for report details 35 instances in which Batuk soldiers were suspected to have paid for sex, since guidance for soldiers on the rule was published in July 2022. During that period 7,666 British soldiers served at the notes that of those, 26 cases happened before training on the new rule was initiated for all army staff in November of that year, with nine reported cases since then. In the majority of cases, the allegation that soldiers had paid for sex was never addition to those detailed in the report, the Foreign Office told the BBC there was a small number - less than five - cases of alleged use of sex workers currently under investigation. The alleged incidents happened after the inquiry was report said that despite the training given by the Army and the control measures in place, the reality was that "transactional sexual activity" by UK personnel in Kenya was still happening, and that "the level is somewhere between low and moderate"."It is not out of control, but the best way for the Army to manage the risk is for the Army to assume it may be at the upper end of that scale between low and moderate," the report report noted efforts by the Army to stamp out the practice, including regular training and the use of "sharkwatch" patrols with a senior officer of Sargeant rank or above deployed to monitor the conduct of junior personnel when they left the base for nights army said it would implement recommendations from the report, including making it easier to dismiss soldiers found to have used sex workers and the implementation of additional report follows years of controversy about the conduct of soldiers at Batuk sparked by an investigation by the Sunday Times in 2021 which revealed the alleged involvement of a British soldier in the murder of Ms Wanjiru, a mother of one whose body was found dumped in a septic tank near a hotel where she had been seen with soldiers on the night she in Kenya, MPs have been conducting an inquiry into wider allegations of mistreatment of local people by soldiers at Batuk and have heard claims at public hearings of injuries allegedly sustained through the behaviour of British troops and of soldiers fathering children to Kenyan mothers and then abandoning them when they returned June this year a soldier stationed at the base was sent back to the UK after being accused of Service Inquiry behind the latest report said it had spoken to many local Kenyans and found "the vast majority" of local residents were happy with the presence of the Batuk camp. Shannon Matthews' mum Karen assaulted in prison as pal shares shocking details about jail stint

Karen Matthews friend Julie Bushby opened up on This Morning about her friend's eight years in prison following her conviction of kidnapping her daughter Shannon in 2008 A friend of Shannon Matthews' mum Karen has disclosed that she would make prison visits during her eight-year stretch for orchestrating her daughter's kidnapping. Nine-year-old Shannon vanished on February 19, 2008 in West Yorkshire, triggering a massive police hunt and community search that lasted nearly a month. ‌ Shannon was discovered safe and sound at a property owned by Michael Donovan - the uncle of her mother Karen's partner Craig Meehan. It subsequently emerged that Karen had plotted the abduction with Meehan to cash in on the media attention. ‌ Karen's pal Julie Bushby featured on This Morning (Tuesday) ahead of Prime Video's new documentary The Hunt for Shannon Matthews, reports the Mirror. ‌ Discussing the prison visits, Bushby revealed that Karen would occasionally be "black and blue" during her jail stays. Speaking on This Morning, she told Andi Peters and Emma Willis: "There was a time I went that she was black and blue but she walked into that many doors. "It was a different story each time I went. She just tells me she was scared of family." ‌ She added: "I had so many questions. I used to go visit her at prison. I asked her the same questions." When questioned about her feelings when Karen was nicked for kidnapping Shannon, Bushby said: "When she actually came out with it, it was mixed emotions. ‌ "Relief that it was over, anger, disappointment, used and abused - but not just me, the entire community. She just made us look like plant pots." Matthews was freed from jail in April 2012 after completing half her term. This follows reports that her paedophile former partner has been 'forced to flee again as his home is vandalised'. ‌ Karen is set to feature in Amazon Prime Video's forthcoming documentary The Hunt for Shannon Matthews. Last year, a musical parody about the shocking abduction of Shannon Matthews was branded "cruel and sadistic" by the public. ‌ Performances by troupe K*** and the Gang were completely sold out when Shannon Matthews: The Musical premiered in 2022, with the group planning a film adaptation of the production. Local Labour councillor Mussarat Pervaiz condemned the show for trivialising the girl's ordeal, describing it as "disgusting". Prime Video will re-examine the case in its upcoming documentary which forms part of a large series of true crime investigations airing on the streaming service this year. ‌ A TV insider previously told The Sun: 'The original case dumbfounded the nation when it happened and it took years before many could truly grasp what had happened. 'Shows like 2017 ITV drama The Moorside, which starred Sheridan Smith, tried to shed some light on the events but it continues to be a subject that stirs up an array of emotions. 'The creators of the new documentary hope that the passing of time and the benefit of distance might help lend some perspective on the story.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
