‘We BTO-ed, so I stayed': SG woman shares emotional and mental abuse from partner, regrets not leaving sooner
SINGAPORE: A Singaporean woman recently shared on Reddit that she ended up staying in a toxic relationship longer than she should have, simply because she and her partner had already secured a BTO flat together.
In her post on the r/SingaporeRaw forum, she explained that she had been working full-time throughout the relationship, while her partner was still studying and had no income. As a result, she found herself shouldering most of the financial responsibilities, including paying for their dates and shared expenses.
She added that she had brought up the idea of him getting a part-time job multiple times to help with the costs, but he always brushed it off without much thought.
Her frustration deepened when he went on an 'overseas trip with his classmates' — a decision that made her realise he likely had money, just not when it came to contributing to their relationship.
Despite all this, she stayed. She held on to the hope that once he graduated and started earning, their combined income would eventually support a stable life together.
However, things only continued to spiral. She said his behaviour became increasingly 'toxic,' not just financially but emotionally as well. He would often raise his voice and 'shout at her in public' during arguments, would belittle her because she 'was only a poly graduate,' would leave her to meet his friends even when she was ill, and when faced with difficult conversations, he would walk away instead of trying to resolve them.
She added that whenever she attempted to discuss problems in their relationship, he would claim he was overwhelmed with 'schoolwork' and would begin to suggest that she was part of the problem. On several occasions, he even implied that her presence in his life was contributing to his mental health struggles, going so far as to say he felt 'suicidal.'
The final straw, she said, was when he looked her in the eye and asked what 'she actually brought to the table.'
'Now that I am still healing from this traumatic relationship, I realised what I experienced was a perfect example of how a person can be too fixated on getting a toxic relationship fixed just because we BTO-ed,' she wrote.
Not wanting others to go through the same thing, she added, 'Please, leave a toxic relationship even if it means letting go of your house that is getting ready.
Please, leave a toxic relationship even if it means starting all over again to meet someone new, love someone new, and get a house with someone new. Never let anyone doubt yourself and your capabilities. Please, love yourself before you love others.' 'This is true; don't stay for the BTO.'
In the comments section, one user remarked that stories like this explain why so many people are now scared of falling in love or settling down. They said, 'How many people stay in such relationships just to get a BTO flat? And the government wonders why nobody wants to have children or even get into a relationship. I don't expect silver-spoon elites to be able to comprehend the concept of trauma. Most fatigued nation, most traumatised nation too.'
Meanwhile, others responded with words of support for the woman who shared her story. One commenter said, 'It's always giving yourself time and space to really call this relationship what it is. I think you must have come a long way to come to this conclusion and accept it. Sending you love and light, and I hope you heal.'

Before applying for a BTO flat, Thirst SG encourages couples to pause and have a few honest conversations with each other. Questions like 'Are we really ready for marriage?' or 'Should we commit to something as big as a flat if we're still unsure about our future together?' are worth asking before taking that next step.
It's not just about emotional readiness either. Couples should also think through the more practical aspects. For example, where will they stay while waiting for the flat to be built? Are they both comfortable living with either set of parents, and will that arrangement support a healthy relationship?
If staying with family isn't an option, renting may be the only alternative. But that brings up other concerns: Can they afford the cost of rent and bills for a few years? How will they manage shared expenses? And will renting delay their plans for saving up for things like a wedding or home renovation?
In the end, it's always better for couples to talk through these important issues early on, rather than rush into a long-term commitment they may not be fully prepared for.

Jail for part-time tutor who filmed young students, own sisters in toilets over 10 years
SINGAPORE: In 2011, a man began illicitly filming females in their private moments, beginning with his sisters. While he used his mobile phone initially, the man, now 31, started buying spy camera pens for the purpose and widened his net in the course of a decade to include scores of other victims, including his ex-girlfriend, cousin, and students and staff from an education centre he taught at part-time. Investigators who went through his recordings established that they were filmed at the education centre, at the residences of relatives, friends and tutees, and in shopping centre toilets. No fewer than eight victims were identified in his videos. The man, who cannot be named to protect the victims' identities, was handed a jail term of one year and five months on Thursday (Jun 19) over his offences. He pleaded guilty to three counts of voyeurism and two of possessing voyeuristic images or recordings. Another six similar counts were taken into consideration for his sentencing. Apart from teaching part-time at the education centre, the man gave home tuition and had a full-time job as an engineering assistant with an air-conditioning company. PLACED PEN IN TOILET AT EDUCATION CENTRE Between April 2020 and August 2021, while teaching at the education centre, the man placed a spy camera pen in a toilet cubicle at the centre, which was used by both males and females. He recorded one of his tutees, a girl who was only nine years old at the time, relieving herself in a recording that lasted 10 minutes. He later told investigators that he had started recording voyeuristic videos at the education centre in May 2018. FILMED SISTER One occasion where the man filmed one of his sisters occurred on Jun 27, 2021. He switched on a spy camera pen and placed it in recording mode in a toilet before positioning its lens to face the toilet bowl. The sister, then 26, eventually used the toilet, and the man retrieved the pen later. The recording lasted nearly nine minutes and captured the woman relieving herself. CAUGHT BY DOMESTIC HELPER The man's long-time offending came to an end when a vigilant domestic worker spotted one of his pens in a toilet and picked it up with the intention of reporting the matter. On Aug 31, 2021, the man went to a residence to provide tuition to a boy. At about 8pm, he went to use the toilet, intending to set up a spy camera pen to record the domestic helper. He placed the pen on a pipe facing outwards towards the rest of the toilet before returning to his tuition session. He returned to retrieve the pen after the helper had used the toilet, but discovered that the device was missing. The maid had entered the toilet to shower, but as she was suspicious of the man, she decided to shower with the lights off. When she spotted the pen after completing her shower, she quickly got dressed and picked up the pen, wanting to inform the tutee's parents about the device. However, she was spotted holding on to the pen by the man after she exited the toilet. She returned the device to him when he asked her to do so, as she felt scared. The domestic helper eventually still informed the tutee's mother, and the police were called. One of the boy's parents informed the police that an attempt to check the contents of the camera had been made, but that this had been unsuccessful. The parent added: "The teacher said he (dropped) it in the toilet and (tried) to recover it." ACCUSED ARRESTED The man was placed under arrest and escorted to his residence on Sep 1, 2021, where police officers seized electronic devices, including four disassembled spy camera pen parts, one spy camera pen, two laptops and a mobile phone. The man then came clean about filming females in compromising states since 2011, starting with his sisters while they were in the toilet. He said he would typically have at least two functional spy camera pens, and would bring one out with him. He would periodically download the footage recorded and transfer it to his hard disks when they began taking up too much space on his laptops. No fewer than 55 images and recordings of victims – both staff and students at the education centre – were found in the devices, with the recordings being around 10 minutes long on average. Another 24 images and recordings of victims younger than 14 were found. There were 87 images and recordings in total. The prosecution said this was a case of a person abusing his position of trust by planting cameras in the homes of his tutee and family, as well as the education centre. "The filming of voyeuristic videos took place over 10 years. No less than eight victims were identifiable in the voyeuristic videos he took, including two of his students who were younger than 14 years old," it added, arguing for no less than two-and-a-half years' jail. The man's lawyer Kalidass Murugaiyan cited his client's various disorders, namely social anxiety disorder, voyeuristic disorder and major depressive disorder with anxious distress, in mitigation. However, District Judge Tan Jen Tse noted that there was nothing in the man's medical reports to indicate that he had been deprived totally or substantively of his self-control. The man had been aware of his actions and their wrongness, and there was no lack of impulse control, said Judge Tan, pointing to the planning and premeditation involved in the offences. He said that the case showed a "gross abuse of trust" as it took place at venues where children and parents have a right to feel safe. General and specific deterrence still outweigh rehabilitation in this case, indicated Judge Tan, who said that he had still taken into account the man's conditions and how he was actively seeking treatment. Voyeurism carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine, caning, or any combination of these penalties.

Cyclist jailed a week over collision with jogger who suffered serious injuries
SINGAPORE: A man who was cycling at East Coast Park failed to see a jogger in front of him and crashed into her, causing her to suffer serious fractures with neurological consequences. Edmund Kwek Jun Wei, 34, was given a week's jail on Friday (Jun 20), after he pleaded guilty to a charge of causing grievous hurt through a negligent act. The incident happened in the early morning of Oct 22, 2024. At around 6.20am, Kwek was riding at about 22kmh along a cycling path with a speed limit of 25kmh. The lights were still lit. Kwek was looking down at one point and failed to see the jogger, 48-year-old Tan Jo-Ann. When he looked up, he saw Ms Tan's back before colliding into her. Kwek was flung off his bicycle, while Ms Tan fell to the ground. When Kwek attended to the victim, she was unable to respond to his questions. He called for emergency services. Ms Tan was taken to Changi General Hospital where she was found to have serious injuries, including fractures on her right skull, the base of the skull and a possible fracture behind her nose. She was discharged on Nov 6, 2024, 16 days later. The injuries affected her sense of smell, taste and left ear hearing, and Ms Tan reported experiencing vertigo when bending forward. An examination showed that she had partial hearing loss in her left ear. Her sense of smell was still lacking as of January this year. Ms Tan attended around 19 sessions of speech therapy until March this year and her speech has improved, with no residual motor deficits, court documents stated. Kwek's lawyer Bozy Lu from Han & Lu Law Chambers told the court that her client had been training for a marathon when the incident occurred. Ms Lu said Kwek tried to offer compensation to Ms Tan, but she declined. The defence lawyer added in mitigation that Kwek was remorseful and pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity he had.

Money laundering charges dropped against former Malaysia PM Najib in US$6.34 million case linked to 1MDB
KUALA LUMPUR: Ex-Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak was on Friday (Jun 20) granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal in a money laundering trial linked to a former subsidiary of the scandal-hit state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). The High Court ruled that there was nothing to show the prosecution was able to proceed with the case for the time being. Najib, 71, faced three money laundering charges filed in February 2019. He was accused of receiving RM27 million (US$6.34 million) in illegal proceeds from SRC International through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts in July 2014. Judge K Muniandy said there had been a plethora of postponements in the case, indicating the prosecution was not ready to proceed. 'The circumstances of the case lean in favour of the accused whereby the prosecution, as of today, is not ready to proceed with the trial of the preferred charges against the accused,' the judge was quoted as saying by news portal Free Malaysia Today. A discharge not amounting to acquittal means the accused is released from current charges, but the prosecution retains the right to reinstate those same charges in future. Najib is currently serving a jail term for a separate conviction of corruption and money laundering for illegally receiving about US$10 million from SRC International. He was in July 2020 found guilty of misappropriating SRC International funds involving the transfer of RM42 million into his personal bank accounts in 2014 and 2015. He has been in Kajang Prison since August 2022, after the Federal Court upheld the High Court decision. In February 2024, his jail term was halved from 12 to six years by the Pardons Board and his fine was reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million. The former premier is fighting to serve the rest of his jail term at home, and has filed an application to initiate contempt proceedings against a former attorney-general for allegedly failing to reveal a royal addendum order allowing him to do so.
