Wingsail issue fixed ahead of New York SailGP

Reuters12-05-2025

May 12 (Reuters) - Repairs and upgrades to all 12 wingsails on the F50 catamarans will be completed in time for the New York Sail Grand Prix, SailGP said on Monday.
SailGP cancelled its Rio event last month due to a wingsail defect which was identified after the Australian boat's wing collapsed in San Francisco in March.
"These new components for the wingsails feature an Aluminum Nomex core and increased laminate, which means the new shear webs will be approximately twice as strong," SailGP CEO Russell Coutts said in a statement.
"It's a huge team effort, but our fans can expect all twelve teams back on the race course when racing kicks off in New York."
The New York SailGP takes place from June 7-8.

BREAKING NEWS Ex-NFL star and Green Bay Packers icon Eddie Garcia dead at 65: Tributes pour in for 'legend'

Tributes are pouring in for former NFL player-turned-board member Eddie Garcia following his death at the age of just 65 on Thursday. The news was released by the Packers on Tuesday night, and was met with an outpouring of emotion from fans in Green Bay who knew Garcia well. The ex-kicker was drafted by the team in the 10th round in 1982 before playing for the team in 19 games across the 1983 and 1984 seasons. In 1984, a hamstring injury cut his season short and he was waived at the end of the campaign, though he remained a key part of the Packers going forward. Prior to arriving in the NFL, Garcia was a placekicker for the SMU Mustangs, where he is still tied for the all-time record of total field goals (44). Post-football, went on to become a senior director with Oshkosh Defense of the Oshkosh Corporation, according to the Packers, and he returned to the team in 2021 when he was elected to the board of directors. For the past four years, he had served on the sales and marketing and Green Bay Packers Foundation committees, continuing work well into his 60s. Garcia's cause of death has not yet been announced, but an obituary shared by the Green Bay Press Gazette described his passing as 'sudden.' He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jill, as well as two daughters, Susan and Katherine, and a grandson, Oscar. On social media, tributes immediately began to pour in for the ex-NFL player, with many writing: 'Legend!'

Giants place 3B Matt Chapman (hand) on IL

June 11 - San Francisco Giants standout third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the 10-day injured list due to right hand inflammation prior to Tuesday's game against the host Colorado Rockies. Chapman injured the hand while being picked off during Sunday's game against the Houston Astros. He jammed it while diving back to first base in the bottom of the eighth inning and immediately displayed he was in pain. Chapman, 32, finished out the game and underwent X-rays, which came back negative. Still, the inflammation remained the following day and then a move was made on Tuesday. The five-time Gold Glove winner is batting .243 with 12 homers and 30 RBIs in 65 games this season. He is in his second season with the Giants. Casey Schmitt will likely receive the most duty at third base while Chapman is sidelined. Schmitt is playing third Tuesday night and batting seventh. The Giants recalled infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. The 27-year-old batted .219 with one homer and eight RBIs in 29 games with San Francisco earlier this season. --Field Level Media
