What 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' fans think of Season 3 so far — from 'Bonrad' shippers to 'Jelly' apologists
The season's first two episodes, which dropped at 3 a.m. ET on Wednesday, have already garnered a trove of opinions from diehard fans. Taking into consideration the fandom's deep investment in the show and its stars, both on and offscreen, The Summer I Turned Pretty's official Instagram and X accounts even issued a warning for fans ahead of the season premiere to 'keep the conversation kind this summer.'
As with seasons past, the fandom is once again staunchly divided into 'Team Bonrad' and 'Team Jelly.' 'Bonrad' shippers, of course, believe Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) and Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney) are endgame, while 'Jelly' fans are convinced that Belly and Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) should come out on top.
While they desperately await the release of Episode 3 — episodes will drop weekly at 3 a.m. ET every Wednesday, with the series finale debuting on Wednesday, Sept. 17 — fans have flocked to social media to share their initial reactions.
From 'Bonrad' shippers to 'Jelly' apologists and everything in between, here's what fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty — commonly referred to as TSITP — are saying about the season so far. Spoilers ahead!
Christmas at Cousins flashback
While there were minimal scenes of them actually together, Belly and Conrad shippers were satisfied with the crumbs they were given in the first two episodes. Fans were especially delighted by a specific scene, a flashback, in which Belly and Conrad serendipitously find themselves alone, together, at the Cousins beach house over the holidays.
Their time together is fleeting — Conrad guiltily bails after just one day because he is, after all, still madly in love with his brother's current girlfriend — but the yearning is still very much apparent. When Belly slips and falls, Conrad lifts her up and carries her to the sofa. The moment triggers a realization in Belly: 'A part of me will always love you.'
'POV: TSITP season 3 only dropped two episodes so far, but Conrad and Belly's chemistry is already unmatched,' read one fan video, while another fan wrote, 'At least Conrad girlies had one win in the first two episodes.'
'P.S. I Still Love You' Easter egg
In a move that one fan called 'the most brilliant thing jenny han has ever done,' members of The Summer I Turned Pretty fandom were quick to notice an expertly planted Easter egg during the 'Bonrad' Christmas flashback. Before abruptly leaving Belly and the Cousins beach house, Conrad leaves her a sticky note on his partially finished crossword. Belly glimpses a crossword clue, which reads, 'Novel by author Jenny Han, 'P.S. I ____ Love You.' She fills in the blanks with the word 'Still,' which Conrad appears to have also written but erased.
Both a nod to Han's 2015 novel P.S. I Still Love You, the second installment in the To All The Boys I've Loved Before movie trilogy, and an acknowledgment of Belly still being in love with Conrad, fans clocked — and then swooned over — the very intentional moment.
Jeremiah's confession
In the final minutes of the first episode, viewers who haven't read the books were surprised to learn that Jeremiah cheated on Belly with Lacie Barone (Lily Donoghue) while vacationing in Cabo for spring break. Belly overhears Lacie speaking of their hookup at a party, which prompts her heartwrenching confrontation with Jeremiah, who admits to sleeping with her and hiding it.
Jeremiah says he assumed he and Belly had legitimately broken up at the time of his alleged offense, though Belly asserts that they hadn't actually called it quits. ('You knew that we weren't really broken up, that that wasn't real,' she tearfully tells him.) Jeremiah later admits to being intimate with Lacie not once, but twice. Belly, however, ends up forgiving him, and the two of them get engaged at the end of Episode 2.
The anti-Jeremiah camp was strongly assembled by this point, with many dumbfounded by his inability to take responsibility for his actions, and Belly's seemingly ill-advised decision to pick 'the guy that CHEATED on her' over 'the man that she will still forever love.'
But some fans are still fiercely defending Casalegno's on-screen character, writing on TikTok, 'I can't with Belly 😭They break up! … Letting yall know he did NOT cheat.'
Music cues for the pop girlies
The Summer I Turned Pretty has been known to punctuate its most emotional moments with tracks by some of music's most beloved pop girlies, like Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo.
Tracks by both Swift and Rodrigo have already played over poignant moments in the first two episodes of the season, from Swift's 'You're Losing Me' soundtracking Belly and Jeremiah's devastating confrontation to Rodrigo's 'Lacy' being heard as Belly deals with the aftermath of their breakup. Ariana Grande's breakup ballad 'i wish i hated you' also plays during the second episode.
'I just got whiplash because you're losing me and lacy being played BACK TO BACK,' one fan wrote on TikTok, while another commented, 'I was stopped in my tracks omg.'

‘Mortal Kombat II' Is Ready to Be a Bigger, Better Sequel
Now that the first trailer for Mortal Kombat II dropped earlier this week, director Simon McQuoid's free to talk about how this follow-up builds on the 2021 reboot. Talking to IGN, McQuoid opened up on ensuring the second movie delivered on the promise of the first movie, namely having the real fighting tournament that features franchise characters beating the hell out of each other. Said characters include the returning Sonya Blade, Raiden, and Liu Kang, and the newly introduced Kitana, Shao Kahn, and Baraka. Oh, and Johnny Cage, now stepping into the role Cole Young did in the previous movie and operating as a POV character into this krazy, khaotic world full of lizard men, mad scientists, and ageless fighters. Of these newcomers, McQuoid called them 'wild and otherworldly, and when you've got characters like that, you have to swing for the fences.' Such swings involve taking the characters to locations from the games like like Hell (where Scorpion resides) and Edenia, the home realm of Kitana, Jade, and Shao Kahn. According to McQuoid, those trips bring 'massive scale' to the film, particularly when it comes to the film's IMAX version. For the format heads, he teased that cut will have 'little story moments and little gems for the super fans…that you won't see in the regular theatrical version. I just wanted to try and innovate and use the format in a way that really makes it a rewarding experience for the audience.' Speaking of the audience, it made that first Mortal Kombat a big hit for HBO Max and its simultaneous theatrical-streaming release. If there's any hope of a third movie, it's entirely up to the folks seeing it, and the film's been made as a complete experience either way. 'There's a coda, but [New Line] doesn't expect to make a sequel. We have to earn that right,' said producer Todd Garner. 'We're not going to give you some post-sequence to be like, 'Oh, this is going to happen in the sequel.' We'll do more if we're given the opportunity, but we don't want to assume that we can.' Mortal Kombat II hits theaters October 24. Want more io9 news? Wrestler Buff Bagwell Has His Right Leg Amputated Following '5-Year Journey Trying to Fix' His Body After a Car Accident
NEED TO KNOW Buff Bagwell's right leg was recently amputated after he was seriously injured in a car accident in August 2020 The World Champion Wrestling star had undergone "several surgeries" over the past five years, but his leg never healed Bagwell now hopes to return to wrestling following his amputation surgeryMarcus "Buff" Bagwell recently had his leg amputated following a 2020 car accident. In a video posted on YouTube on Friday, July 18, the World Champion Wrestling star, 55, revealed that he had an above-the-knee amputation on his right leg due to injuries he sustained in a car accident in August 2020. Joined by his fiancée Stacy Brown in the video, Bagwell recalled the incident, stating, 'I'd been drinking, but just a few beers … I'm going down the road with a Diet Coke, and I am gone … It was like a dream." 'I remember cars, seeing faces look at me like, 'What are you doing?' ... [and] somehow I got off the wrong exit and I ended up behind the mall, and somehow, that's where it all came to the end, where I drove through a men's and women's bathroom," he continued. Photos from the crash were then shown in the video. A brick building had collapsed, and Bagwell's vehicle could be seen destroyed. Bagwell said the impact of the crash caused the dashboard of his vehicle to hit him 'in my right patellar tendons," which ruined his kneecap. "That started this whole five-year journey of trying to fix my leg,' he further explained, also adding that no one else was hurt or died due to the accident. After the crash, Bagwell said he stayed in the hospital for 'several weeks' and had 39 to 40 surgeries for knee replacements, flap surgeries and extension-mechanism repairs. 'That led me into the deepest, darkest [alcohol] addiction I've ever been in,' he recalled. 'My leg wasn't healing, and so I was super depressed.' Bagwell said he then entered rehab for his drinking in August 2022. Shortly after that, he ran into more health complications, and he had one final right knee extensor mechanism repair surgery, but it 'got infected' and 'led to the amputation.' Despite his injuries, Bagwell credited recent times as 'the best years of my life," stating, "I'm not mad about it by no means." Bagwell also said in his video that he plans to eventually return to the ring following his surgery. "I'm gonna be able to run, and I'm going to be able to run better. I want to get back in the ring, hit the ropes, have a match," he said. "You don't have to give up with something like this ... I'm going to show the world that you can have just as good a life with or without a leg." Read the original article on People
