Anwar says 13th Malaysia Plan must tackle economic gaps, fiscal limits
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim chairing the high-level discussion on the 13th Malaysia Plan's preparation with senior government officials today. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) must serve as a starting point for tackling the country's economic challenges. Anwar said these challenges include development and income disparities, limited fiscal space, and the slow pace of structural economic transformation. 'Malaysia must build greater resilience to face global economic risks and uncertainties, while accelerating structural reforms and narrowing socio-economic development gaps,' he said in a Facebook post. Earlier, Anwar chaired a high-level discussion on the 13MP's preparation with senior government officials. He said the preparation of the document, which began in mid-2024, is the result of a collaborative effort and comprehensive feedback on proposed strategies and initiatives from a wide range of stakeholders. These stakeholders include various ministries, state governments, local authorities, civil society organisations and the general public. Last month, a business group expressed concern about the 13MP following the resignation of economy minister Rafizi Ramli. The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta) warned that the country risked missing out on yet another economic cycle (2026–2030) if key reforms outlined in the plan were not retained and fully implemented. Rafizi resigned as the economy minister on May 28 following his defeat to Nurul Izzah Anwar in the race for the PKR deputy president's post. The Pandan MP said his final responsibility as economy minister was to complete the 13MP, which will be tabled in Parliament in the upcoming meeting from July 21 to Aug 28.

Bursa ends in the red as geopolitical tensions, tariff plans rattle markets
KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia closed lower today, weighed down by heavy selling in technology, healthcare, and logistics stocks, as risk-off sentiment intensified following escalating geopolitical tensions and Washington's plan to impose unilateral tariffs within the next two weeks. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Sedek Jantan said the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) closed lower today as geopolitical tensions resurfaced, sending shockwaves through regional markets and sharply dampening investor sentiment. 'Today's trading session bears a striking resemblance to market behaviour in 2022, the first day of the Russia-Ukraine war – though this time, the escalation involves two major oil-exporting nations, following Israel's strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities,' he told Bernama. Among regional peers, Malaysia continues to show relative resilience, similar to its performance during the Ukraine crisis, supported by its position as a net commodity exporter. 'At the time, surging crude palm oil and oil and gas prices supported a rotation into defensives such as utilities and plantations. 'A similar sectoral shift could re-emerge should the current volatility persist,' he added. Meanwhile, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said heightened risk-off sentiment was triggered by Israel's strikes on Iran and escalating tensions in the Middle East. 'Additionally, trade tensions resurfaced after US president Donald Trump cautioned that auto tariffs could be raised soon, just a day after claiming the US-China deal was completed,' he said. 'On the domestic front, we prefer to stay prudent in light of the sudden shift in the macroeconomic environment and acknowledge that investor sentiment may remain volatile,' Thong added. At 5pm, the FBM KLCI slipped 8.51 points, or 0.56%, to 1,518.11 from yesterday's close of 1,526.62. Thailand's top banks Krungthai, GSB and SCB hit pause for maintenance, customers warned of service disruptions
BANGKOK, June 13 — Millions of bank customers across Thailand are bracing for service disruptions as three of the country's biggest banks prepare for extensive system maintenance in the days ahead. The Nation reported that Krungthai Bank, the Government Savings Bank (GSB) and Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) have all announced scheduled outages that will temporarily take down a wide range of core banking functions — including mobile apps, ATM access, and credit card transactions. Customers have been urged to plan ahead, with services such as bill payments, international transfers, and even notifications on messaging platforms like LINE expected to be interrupted. Krungthai Bank is implementing two separate maintenance periods. The first — affecting business services including the Krungthai BUSINESS platform — will begin at 10pm today and last until 6pm tomorrow, spanning 20 hours. Businesses have been advised to complete transactions in advance and avoid scheduling operations on June 14. A second, shorter disruption will hit the bank's consumer app, Krungthai NEXT, early on June 20. The app will be unavailable from 1am to 6am. While services are expected to resume as normal, Krungthai has warned there may be delays in retrieving account statements. The Government Savings Bank has scheduled upgrades to its credit card systems tomorrow, divided into two time slots — starting at 4:30am with an unspecified duration, followed by a second phase from 9:30am to 11am. Customers will be unable to use key services during these periods, including online shopping, cash withdrawals, and transactions via the MyMo and GSB NOW apps. International ATM access and EDC card reader payments will also be impacted. SCB is expected to carry out its own maintenance work, although full details were not immediately disclosed. The banks have apologised for the inconvenience, emphasising the upgrades are essential to improve long-term service reliability and security.
