Commanders QB Jayden Daniels was 'surgical' in joint scrimmage vs. Patriots

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels always seems to rise to the occasion. For the first time in the 2025 season, Daniels and the Commanders faced another team when Washington shared the field with the New England Patriots in a joint scrimmage on Wednesday. It was a matchup between the two quarterbacks chosen No. 2 (Daniels) and No. 3 (Drake Maye) in the 2024 NFL draft. And these two gunslingers put on a show. It was Daniels' first time against another team in the NFL without star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. McLaurin, of course, is currently at odds with the Commanders on a new contract extension. After initially holding out of training camp, McLaurin reported after four days, and Washington immediately placed him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list with an ankle injury. The two sides are still working toward a new agreement. So, how did McLaurin do against New England's defense? Well, see for yourself. Here is Daniels throwing a dime to Deebo Samuel for a touchdown. Daniels and Samuel have connected numerous times throughout training camp and are clearly on the same page. He wasn't done. Here is Daniels throwing another touchdown pass, this time to impressive undrafted rookie Ja'Corey Brooks. Ben Volin, a longtime NFL writer at the Boston Globe, was impressed with Daniels. Daniels got plenty of work in on Wednesday, which was good, as head coach Dan Quinn all but confirmed he would not play in Friday's preseason opener against the Patriots.
