KUCHING: A para-athletics team from Sarawak is set to travel to Germany for exposure and training to enhance their development, says Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
The state Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister announced that the 13-member team of para-athletes and officials will visit Berlin from June 16 to 25 in a collaboration between Sarawak and Germany.
The athletes include Para Malaysia Games (Sukma) gold medallists in throwing and running events, she said at a press conference on Thursday (June 5).
"They will meet with a Paralympic sports association, sports psychologist, and nutritionist to gain useful tips and undergo training sessions.
"There will also be a career talk focusing on their future after athletics," Fatimah said.
The team will visit the Paralympic Sports Centre in Cottbus, Brandenburg, to gain insight into the setup there.
The trip will allow the para-athletes to train with German coaches and be assessed on their strengths and weaknesses, while Sarawak coaches will collaborate with their German counterparts.
Additionally, the athletes will participate in a German regional para-athletics championship to gain exposure and experience.
"We hope the athletes will benefit from the trip and improve their performance through this exposure and training," Fatimah said.
The para-athletics team is a major component of Sarawak's Para Sukma team.
At the last Para Sukma held in Kuching last year, the Sarawak para-athletics team won 33 gold, 24 silver, and 37 bronze medals.
The team has continued training since November last year and recently excelled in the Para-Athletics Borneo Circuit, securing 53 gold, 36 silver, and 15 bronze medals.
The Sarawak para-athletics team will compete in the National Para-Athletics Championship in Kuantan, Pahang, from June 26 to 29, which will select athletes for the upcoming 13th Asean Para Games in Thailand in January next year.

Top pairs could still be included in SEA Games team

Malaysia men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in action against South Korea's Kim Young-hyuk-Wang Chan during the first round of Malaysian Masters at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: National doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei remain in the Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) plans for the SEA Games in Thailand this December. National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said BAM have yet to finalise the 20-player list for the biennial multi-sport event following a selection committee meeting with the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. BAM have requested a one-week extension before submitting the final list to OCM, citing concerns that main rivals Thailand and Indonesia may also field strong pairs in their bid for gold. 'Thailand will be sending their strongest squad, and I understand Kunlavut (Vitidsarn) will also be competing,' said Rexy. 'We still need to discuss further, including with the singles camp led by Kenneth (Jonassen) and other coaches such as Herry (Iman Pierngadi) for the men's doubles. 'We are among the top three contenders. If Thailand and Indonesia send their strongest teams, we will do the same. If not, we will at least send a line-up capable of mounting a strong challenge. He also dismissed concerns of a scheduling clash between the SEA Games and the BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China. The badminton competition at the SEA Games will take place from Dec 8 to 14, while the World Tour Finals are scheduled for Dec 17 to 21. Earlier, Aaron expressed his intention to make way for other pairs such as world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun or the in-form Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King, who recently won the Macau Open, to compete in Thailand. Aaron and Wooi Yik previously won the men's doubles gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games in Manila, the Philippines. Rexy said while he respected Aaron's view, a thorough discussion must be held before making any decision. 'It doesn't mean I don't support what Aaron said. I respect it, but there are many factors to consider and matters that require detailed discussion. ''We value the players' opinions, and in men's doubles, we have several other strong combinations,' he added.

SUKMA/Golf: Ensuring only the best are selected

Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: 'The final list of four men and four ladies will be determined based on their training commitment, playing ability tests, skill tests, fitness tests, discipline and attitude,' Chong said. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Golf Association (SGA) has drawn up specific selection criteria to ensure only the best players will get to represent the State in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Selangor next year. State coach Albright Chong said the players will need to play in a minimum of three SGA sanctioned tournaments by January 2026 based on the selection and monitoring process planned by SGA Sukma selection committee. Advertisement According to him, the tournaments available for selection are the 39th Sabah Amateur Open 2025 starting this Thursday (August 14), followed by the 18th Kudat Golf Club Amateur Open (September 12-14), 27th Keningau Golf and Country Club Amateur Open (September 19-21), 44th Sandakan Amateur Open Golf Championship (September 26-28), 32nd Men's & 25th Ladies Labuan Golf Club Amateur Open (November 19-21), 13th Sabah International Junior Masters (December 19-21) and 1st Kinabalu Junior Masters 2026 (Jan 9-11). 'Our scouting has only just started on August 1. The players eligible for selection must be born on or after January 1, 2005 or must be 21-year-old or younger in 2026. 'Those players who are aiming to get selected must submit their tournament report to SGA immediately after each event is completed. 'We will then consider the best events based on strike average and only the top eight men and ladies will be chosen and named on the long list. 'The final list of four men and four ladies will be determined based on their training commitment, playing ability tests, skill tests, fitness tests, discipline and attitude,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? From doubt to determination – Zii Jia back on track for worlds

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's line-up for the World Championships looks set to remain largely unchanged ahead of today's closing entry, with men's singles ace Lee Zii Jia expected to make the trip to Paris from Aug 25-31. It was earlier believed that the former Asian champion Zii Jia might withdraw despite receiving an invitation from the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Zii Jia has been nursing a ligament injury in his right ankle, which forced him out of several tournaments, including the China and Japan Opens. However, as The Star reported earlier, a source close to the player said he has shown encouraging signs of recovery and has been undergoing intensive training with his coach Yeoh Kay Bin. This will be his first outing after a five-month injury layoff, with his last appearance being at the All-England in March. Joining him in the men's singles is Leong Jun Hao, who will be making his debut at the world meet. Zii Jia, however, will not be seeded this time as his ranking has slipped to No. 52. In the women's singles, Goh Jin Wei will be joined by K. Letshanaa. The other representatives are Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee (women's doubles); 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 2 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King (men's doubles); and mixed doubles pairs Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (fourth seeds), husband-and-wife duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie (sixth seeds) and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin (13th seeds). The draw will be released tomorrow.
