‘Some mad stuff' - Shels coach on struggles of League of Ireland champions
Shelbourne assistant manager Joey O'Brien says the Reds' title defence is faltering because they are making errors that were absent from their play in recent seasons.
Shels fell to their fourth defeat of the league campaign in last Friday's derby against Bohemians - while they have only one five games so far.
The former West Ham and Ireland defender believes individual mistakes - such as the one that led to Bohs' opener and captain Mark Coyle's red card - are costing them dearly.
Coyle turned into danger at Dalymount Park and reacted by dragging Dayle Rooney down inside the box, resulting in a penalty to Bohs and Coyle's dismissal.
O'Brien was in the dugout last Friday as manager Damien Duff served a suspension - and watched the game from a hill behind the School End of Dalymount Park.
He said: 'We got a turnover of players, you know. So I suppose since last season, the lads leaving in the summer… and then again this season there's been a turnover of players.
'So it's (about) finding a way. But yeah, without a doubt, I suppose the standout thing is we weren't making them (mistakes), we weren't giving up goals that we've given up this year.

'You look at a lot of the goals we've given up, they've been really, really poor, you know, from an individual point of view; mistakes, ogs, whatnot. Some mad stuff.
'That probably hasn't really happened to us over the last few years.
'But look, as I said, it's just about the lads nailing down the performance, concentrating for 90 minutes and trying to eradicate them out of games.'
Shels aren't the only club this season that are trying to find consistency - but O'Brien expects better from the reigning champions.
'You can do a lot of work, obviously, all you want, and talk about certain things, but if you keep making mistakes regarding the backline, obviously with the goals we've been giving away, it's an uphill task,' he said.
'There's obviously a lot of good teams, not a lot of difference in a lot of the teams, I don't think.
'The first goal (against Bohs) is a massive thing. The first goal is a massive turning point in the game. Obviously it was a bad decision by Mark (Coyle).'
Attention turns to Monday night's visit of high-flying FAI Cup winners Drogheda United - and their form so far this season hasn't surprised O'Brien.
'Obviously, I suppose when you go 15, 16 games, they're where they are in the league for a reason,' he said.
'They finished last season brilliantly and continued that on this year. So it's going to be a tough game.'
Coyle and Harry Wood both miss out tonight after their red cards against Bohs, while Drogheda, denied a win against Derry on Friday by a last-gasp equaliser, are missing Josh Thomas, Paul Doyle and Darragh Markey.
Former Shels man Shane Farrell returns from suspension, for the fourth meeting between these two sides already this season.
Their first, in the President's Cup, was won by Shels, while Drogheda won their opening Premier Division clash, and the latest one, last month, ended in a 2-2 draw.

Luis Diaz's Liverpool future in doubt as Colombian winger reveals he's ‘talking to clubs'
The Colombia international has two years left on his current deal and this week the Reds rebuffed an approach from Barcelona, who are long-time admirers, insisting the player was not for sale. However, it is understood there are currently no plans to open negotiations about an extension for Diaz, who turned 28 in January. 'We are currently in contact with Liverpool, because we are talking to clubs, and that's normal given the transfer market that's opening. We're trying to arrange what's best for us,' he told a press conference before Colombia's World Cup qualifier at home to Peru. 'We're talking to clubs, it's normal in the market and we're looking at what's best for us. 'I'm waiting to see what happens. I'm very happy at Liverpool, I've always said so. They've welcomed me very well from day one. 'If they give us a good renewal or I stay there for two years, I'll be happy. Now it's up to them.'

Former Cork and Bohs star wants English club move after rejecting SPL stay
Dan Casey is looking to pursue a move to an English club after rejecting an offer to stay at Motherwell. Former Cork City and Bohs defender Casey, 27, was with the Steelmen since February 2023 and played 85 times for the club since initially moving on a short-term deal. However the club has confirmed that Casey has decided to move on, having turned down a new deal with the SPL outfit. His loss is a blow as Casey played 41 times last term - more than any other player at the club - and with the club currently looking for a new manager, following Michael Wimmer's departure last month. 'My time with Motherwell has come to an end," said Casey. "I've loved every minute of being here. 'Some of my favourite football memories were made here and I'll always be grateful for that. "A huge thank you to all the Motherwell staff, my teammates and especially the fans for everything.'

Love Islander Toby has designs on playing for Ireland while Catherine is game for Dancing with the Stars Catherine Agbaje and Toby Aromolaran launch Virgin Media Play: Get Play,Your Way Love Island star Toby Aromolaran is hoping for a call-up from not just a League of Ireland side but the Irish national football team. The 26-year-old, who finished second on the hit TV show in 2021 when he reached the final alongside Chloe Burrows, is a footballer with semi-professional club Hashtag United, and its men's team plays in the Isthmian League Premier in the UK. 'If an Irish team gave me a trial in the Irish league, I would, why not? It would be a bit of fun,' Toby says. 'My mum (Victoria) is from Crossmolina in Co Mayo and I've got an Irish passport. 'I play as a forward with Hashtag United, both on the wings and as a striker.' Toby is setting his footballing sights high. 'I don't see why Ireland don't call me up, why not? I'm just waiting for the manager to call,' he winks. Finalists Toby and Chloe Toby, who grew up in Essex and whose dad is from Nigeria, is a regular visitor to Ireland. 'I was in Mayo last year, the October half term. It was quite funny cos I got recognised a bit,' he explains. 'Mum's dad is from Wexford, then he moved to Mayo and my mum grew up in Mayo. I still have my cousins and aunt that live in Foxford. I've been going there since I was quite young, nearly every summer.' Toby confirms he's 'young, free and single' right now. 'I wouldn't say no to going a date with an Irish girl,' he smiles. But he draws the line at Maura Higgins. 'Yeah I am familiar with Maura. She's a nice girl, she's alright, not a bit of me though. There's nothing wrong with her but she's just not my type, we're just not compatible. 'The age gap wouldn't work — I'm not her type and she's not my type,' he insists. The 24-year-old student and real estate agent from Blanchardstown was in season 10 of Love Island in 2023, entering on day one before being dumped on Day 38. Earlier this year Catherine also featured on Love Island All Stars. During her time in the villa she bonded with Welsh goalkeeper Scott Van-Der-Sluis. 'He played for Shelbourne, he's a goalkeeper,' says Catherine, who now lives in London. 'We talked a lot about Dublin, I think that was what we bonded about, that he lived in Dublin and trained here. He only lived 10 minutes away from where I lived in Blanchardstown, so we did talk about Dublin a lot.' Catherine is also currently single and has a couple of celebrity crushes. 'Looks wise, I like Michael B Jordan, but personality wise I love the streamer called Kai (Cenat), he's the biggest streamer. 'He's so funny. I'd love someone I could just sit down with and laugh for hours,' she says. Toby also has his own personal favourites. '[American singers] Madison Beer and SZA,' he raves when asked about his dream date. Both stars giggle when asked about the possibility of them dating each other some time, given they live close to each other in the London area. 'We're going on holidays after this, maybe Miami, we haven't decided yet,' jokes Toby. Catherine is enjoying travelling and has a number of projects on the go. I think we have some mutual friends, but I didn't know here personally. I watched the show.' Catherine and Toby have their own bits of advice for the new batch going into the 12th series of Love Island tomorrow.. 'My tip is be yourself, go for what you want, stand your ground,' she says. Toby adds: 'Just enjoy the process and let yourself enjoy the experience, because there's only limited time you're going to be in that village, so enjoy it while it lasts — connect to people, just let go, don't be uptight.'
