This is where things get interesting. These are the teams just outside of the elite of the elite top ten, but they're all good enough to come into the season dreaming of being in the College Football Playoff chase. There's one massive problem for a few of them - the schedules. Oklahoma and Florida, for example, have the talent to beat just about anyone, but their brutal slates will likely keep that from happening. Our preseason rankings are based on how good all the teams are, and they're not about predicting what's going to happen. The College Football News preseason rankings from 11 to 25 are ...

What Penn State fans should know about each Big Ten team in 2025

Now that we have reached the midway point of the summer season, many of us are beginning to turn our eyes to the start of a brand new college football season. Expectations are high for Penn State this season after a deep playoff run last year and a roster returning plenty of talent to make another push for a long-awaited national title. But we also want to start gearing up for the season by knowing just what Penn State has to face within the Big Ten. The Big Ten landed four teams in the College Football Playoff last season with Big Ten champion Oregon, eventual national champion Ohio State, Penn State, and Indiana each representing the conference in the postseason. Early playoff projections are looking for the Big Ten to be well-represented once again this year in the second season of the 12-team College Football Playoff format. Penn State is expected to be one of those Big Ten representatives. Who else will join the Nittany Lions in the playoffs? We spent some time taking a look at each team in the Big Ten heading into the 2025 season to provide a quick glimpse at the conference. We provided a brief recap of each school's 2024 season, highlighted the head coach, top offensive and defensive players on each roster, and ran through the 2025 schedule each school will face. If you missed any of our quick previews for each Big Ten team, fear not! The list below will take you to each of our 2025 quick Big Ten team previews. Jets' Latest Prediction Would See Justin Fields Quickly Replaced

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Jets made the decision to move on from Aaron Rodgers this offseason. To replace him, the team went out in NFL free agency and signed Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract. Fields put together a solid season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024. At the beginning of the year when starting in place of Russell Wilson, he performed well and had the team playing at a high level and winning. Heading into the 2025 season, Fields is looking to get his NFL career back on track. He's looking to prove that he can be a legitimate franchise quarterback. Justin Fields #2 of the Pittsburgh Steelers warms up prior to the game against the Dallas Cowboys at Acrisure Stadium on October 06, 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Read more: Browns' Shedeur Sanders Receives Potential Date for First Career Start Last season with the Steelers, Fields played in 10 total games. He started in six of those games, completing 65.8 percent of his pass attempts for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. Fields also picked up 289 yards and scored five more touchdowns on the ground. Depending on how the upcoming campaign goes, the team could look into other quarterback options. Keeping that in mind, a new prediction has been made that would see New York replace Fields quickly. Mark Stolte of Pro Football Network released an intriguing mock draft. He had the Jets taking Penn State standout quarterback Drew Allar with the No. 5 overall pick. "Through all of his faults, he has a strong arm and the ideal size. He is comfortable managing a pocket and ranked 22nd in EPA per dropback on play-action throws — something the Jets need to lean heavily on with such a talented running back in Breece Hall," Stolte wrote. "While he wouldn't provide the Jets with much mobility, them taking fifth means Justin Fields didn't work out so it makes sense for them to go in the opposite direction." Read more: Raiders' Ashton Jeanty Lands Eye-Popping Endorsement Allar led the Nittany Lions on a deep run in the College Football Playoff last season. He threw for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, while completing 66.5 percent of his passes. It's too early to know what the 2025 season will have in store for New York and Fields. However, if he doesn't clearly show that he's a franchise caliber quarterback, the Jets moving on and taking a quarterback high in the 2026 NFL Draft would make a lot of sense. What Penn State fans should know about the Minnesota Golden Gopher sin 2025

In the Big Ten there are programs that are clearly siting toward the top of the conference and thinking about a spot in the College Football Playoff and there are teams that are in clear need of rebuilding or laying a foundation. Minnesota is neither of those programs going into the 2025 college football season. So what exactly is Minnesota? The Gophers could be considered a bit of a wild card team that is capable of giving any top-tier team a legitimate scare while also being a team that could drop some games in frustrating fashion to hold them back. Minnesota is a team with good mental toughness but lacking in some of the key areas that hold them back from making any legitimate push for a spot in the Big Ten championship game and the College Football Playoff. But they are not to be taken lightly on any given Saturday in the Big Ten. Here is a quick look at the Minnesota Golden Gophers heading into the 2025 college football season. 2024 in Review Minnesota started off the season losing a nailbiter against North Carolina in a defensive battle and dropped a 27-24 game against Michigan a few weeks later to head into October with a 2-3 record. But Minnesota started to put some things together and form a bit of an identity. Minnesota bounced back from the Michigan loss by pulling a 24-17 upset of then-No. 11 USC and followed that with a road win at UCLA and a home win against Maryland. Minnesota then upset no. 24 Illinois on the road at the start of November and gave Penn State a massive scare later in the month before falling 26-25 against the playoff-bound Nittany Lions. But the season ended on a winning note with a victory against rival Wisconsin in Madison and in the Duke's Mayo Bowl against West Virginia. Head Coach Profile Time flies when you are having fun, and the Gophers have been doing that for the most part since the arrival of PJ Fleck back in 2017. Yes, Fleck is entering his ninth season at the helm of the Golden Gophers as he continues to instill the Row the Boat mentality for the program. Fleck is 56-39 in his time with Minnesota and owns an impressive 6-0 record in postseason bowl games with the program, including last season's Duke's Mayo Bowl victory. Fleck is 86-61 for his coaching career, including his four seasons building up the Western Michigan program, which brings him within reach of his 100th career win. That milestone may have to be celebrated next season, but Fleck continues to be a coach who will have his name thrown around the coaching search rumor mill if things go well for him this fall. Top Offensive Player Minnesota has one of the Big Ten's top-10 rushers from last season returning in 2025 with Darius Taylor. Taylor rushed for 986 yards and 10 touchdowns last season as a sophomore. Taylor also had 350 receiving yards on 54 receptions with a pair of receiving touchdowns for Minnesota last season. Taylor was 10th in the Big Ten in rushing yardage and is one of the top returning rushers for 2025 along with Penn State's Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton. Expect Taylor to be heavily featured in the Minnesota offense once again this fall, and he should eclipse the century mark as a result. Top Defensive Player Minnesota will return one of the top rising defensive stars in the conference with Koi Perich. Perich wasted little time racking up some impressive numbers as a freshman last season with five interceptions to lead the Big Ten. Perich had 46 total tackles and 2.5 TFL. He is also a special-teams weapon for the Gophers with action on punt and kickoff returns. 2025 Schedule Preview Penn State will not play Minnesota this season but the Gophers still face some of the stiffest challenges the Big Ten will have to offer this fall. Minnesota will have to play on the road against Ohio State in early October and will play a Friday night game at Oregon in mid-November. Minnesota will get a bye week before playing at Oregon on that Friday night and the other bye week will come before jumping into Big Ten play at the end of September with a home game against Rutgers. Minnesota will also get a Friday home game against Nebraska, which could be a pivotal game for both teams in mid-October. That also gives Minnesota an extra day to prepare for its next game at Iowa the following week. This looks like a schedule that could see a max of nine wins if things go really well, but a season around the .500 mark is not unrealistic to expect from Minnesota. Still, it should end in a bowl game.
