Pearly-Thinaah seek revenge in Japan Open final after breaking jinx

KUALA LUMPUR: Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah are gunning for the Japan Open title after finally ending their long-standing hoodoo against home favourites Chiharu Shida-Nami Matsuyama in the semi-finals on Saturday.
The world No. 3 had only beaten the Japanese pair once in 14 previous meetings — but tore up the script with a dominant 21-13, 21-11 win in just 36 minutes to book their spot in the final.
Revealing the key to their breakthrough, Pearly said: "We were patient and didn't rush to score points. Our communication and trust throughout the match were the difference."
Now, the Malaysians have a shot at revenge when they face China's world No. 1 Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning in the final — the same pair who beat them in last month's Indonesia Open final.
Victory on Sunday would make Pearly-Thinaah the first Malaysian women's doubles pair to lift the Japan Open title.
In the other semi-final, Sheng Shu-Tan Ning cruised past compatriots Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian 21-7, 21-16 in a one-sided affair.
Until now, the best Malaysian result in the women's doubles at this Super 750 event was a runner-up finish by former world No. 1 Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui in 2008.
Thinaah said their stunning win over Shida-Matsuyama has lifted their confidence.
"We didn't focus too much on the score. We just fought for every point," she said.
"The support and motivation we gave each other really helped. Now we'll rest, prepare, and talk things through with our coaches. We want to give our best in the final."
Shida-Matsuyama were a shadow of their usual selves — perhaps distracted after announcing last week they'll split following next month's World Championships in Paris.
Even so, Pearly-Thinaah's win could not have come at a better time, and they'll be eyeing a double blow on Sunday with their sights firmly set on the title.

Shi Yuqi wins Japan Open badminton title over Lanier

CHINA 's Shi Yuqi secured the Japan Open badminton title with a commanding 21-17, 21-15 victory over defending champion Alex Lanier of France in the men's singles final. The former world number one showcased his experience against the rising French star, sealing the win in 50 minutes. 'I wanted to take it at my own pace, and even if I was losing I knew it was important to dig in,' said Shi, currently ranked third globally. 'My opponent is young and he has a lot of physical strength, so I knew I had to stick to my own style.' Lanier, who won his first major senior title in Tokyo last year, admitted feeling the pressure as defending champion. 'I don't think that it is affecting me mentally, but physically you play with a bit more pressure,' he said. In the women's final, South Korea's An Se-young continued her dominant season with a 21-12, 21-10 win over China's Wang Zhiyi. The world number one has now claimed six titles in seven tournaments this year, her only defeat coming at the Singapore Open. 'I always have areas that need to be improved on so I work on those in training,' said An, the reigning Olympic champion. 'I challenge myself and that's what leads to these results.' China enjoyed further success in doubles events. Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin triumphed in mixed doubles, while Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning won the women's doubles. South Korea's Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae took the men's doubles title over Malaysia's Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin. - AFP

AirAsia founder eyes Malaysian football runway [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Tony Fernandes may have stepped away from football years ago, but he is ready to make a comeback. And the AirAsia founder is eyeing the FA of Malaysia (FAM) runway — meaning he hopes to help local football. Fernandes, a former co-owner of English club, Queens Park Rangers, returned to the spotlight as Team Harimau manager at the Zurich Liga 7x7 tournament at Kuala Lumpur FA Stadium on Saturday. At 60, Fernandes' passion for football is evidently still running strong. "It was amazing (Zurich Liga). Everyone who came, enjoyed themselves. It was impressive that people took it seriously — protested, got upset they didn't win. That's passion," said Fernandes, who fielded a squad of mostly ex-internationals. He said watching Malaysia beat Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier last month, has reignited his long-held goal to contribute more meaningfully to Malaysian football. "I love football. I'm 60 and I still go out there and kick a ball. If they (FAM) want me, I would love to help," he said. "I've never been offered any positions in FAM or anywhere, right? Maybe I'm too controversial or speak my mind too much. But I'm 100 per cent (if there is an offer to join FAM), I want to see us back at our best." Fernandes, who also ran a football team, PJ Rangers from 2014-2018, said: "When competing with the J-League, K-League and Saudi League, you need proper pitches, sports science, analytics, and the full package. That's what we're missing." Fernandes believes that new formats, such as seven-a-side football, will be of much interest to younger audiences, much like Twenty20 in cricket, while boosting participation at the grassroots level. Fernandes now wants to revive two things close to his heart – sports and social impact. "I want to build a low-cost school and hospital. But if there's one more project that I could do with all my heart, it's bringing Malaysian football back to life." Previous Next

Addeen bags second straight title, Wa Sern clinches Satellite event

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a Sunday to remember for Malaysian squash as Addeen Idrakie and Low Wa Sern bagged the Victorian Open and ACE PSA WSF Satellite No. 5 titles, respectively. For 31-year-old Addeen, the win marked his second title in as many weeks after triumphing at the Morrinsville Open in New Zealand last weekend. World No. 104 Addeen proved too strong for unseeded compatriot Nathan Kueh, cruising to an 11-2, 11-4, 8-11, 11-3 victory in the final in Melbourne, Australia. "This is my best run since recovering from a shoulder injury five months ago," said Addeen. "I'm proud of winning back-to-back titles. My next event is the National Championships next month, and I'll give it my all to defend my title." Meanwhile, reigning Asian Junior Under-19 champion Wa Sern bounced back from the disappointment of missing out on his final World Junior Championships appearance by clinching the Satellite event in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia did not send a team to the championships in Cairo due to the ongoing Middle East crisis. Second seed and world No. 370 Wa Sern barely broke a sweat as he swept aside compatriot M. Nickhileswar 11-5, 11-7, 11-0 in the final at the ACE University Malaya Centre of Excellence. "Winning this tournament will help improve my world ranking," said Wa Sern. "I'm also looking forward to the National Championships in Penang next week before I head back to the United States to resume my studies at Trinity College, Connecticut."
