Proposal to install garbage incinerator in north Chennai should not be implemented: Anbumani Ramadoss

The Hindu28-07-2025
PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Monday said that proposed garbage incinerator plant (waste-to-energy) in Madhavaram zone should not be implemented as it would affect millions of people living in the area.
Speaking at Madhavaram on day 4 of his padayatra to reclaim the rights of people, Dr. Anbumani said that the Rs. 1248 crore worth project which hopes to produce electricity by burning waste, including plastic, would be a disaster for people living in Tiruvottiyur, Mathur, Vyasarpadi, Madhavaram, Kodungaiyur, Royapuram, Kasimedu, and Manali.
'Within its 10-KM radius lies, Anna Nagar, Perambur, Puzhal, Sengundram, Villivakkam, Parrys, Kolathur, Egmore, Ayanavaram, Chepauk, Purasaiwalkam and Chetpet - these areas will also be affected by pollution from the waste to energy plant. This plant would release 28 times more dioxins, three times more nitrous oxide, 14 times more mercury, 6 times more sulphur dioxide and two and a half times more CO2 when compared to Thermal Power station,' he said.
Dr. Anbumani added, 'The plan is anti-people. Even developed nations such as United States and other European countries have stopped operating these plants.'

Veer Savarkar College in Najafgarh: New DU college yet to start admission process, awaits approvals from Education, Finance depts

Months after the Delhi University (DU) announced the opening of Veer Savarkar College in Najafgarh – a DU college in nearly three decades – student admissions are now caught in a web of procedural delays, The Indian Express has learnt. The admission process was expected to begin this summer, following a public announcement made in March by Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, who had said that the college would begin enrolling students from the 2025-26 academic session. The announcement was made during the university's 92nd annual court meeting. However, DU officials now say that key approvals are still pending from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance. 'We plan to start the admissions process as soon as we clear all these procedures,' DU South Campus Director Rajni Abbi told The Indian Express on Thursday. 'If we get all the approvals, we are planning to admit students and start the session, even 15 days late if needed, but all this is provided we clear all the pending procedures,' she added. Abbi further said that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has already sanctioned faculty and staff positions for the college earlier this year. The last time that DU had set up a new college was in 1995, when Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences had been established, funded by the Delhi government. As per a DU statement issued in March, Veer Savarkar College at Roshanpura village in Najafgarh – roughly five minutes from DU's West Campus – is to be developed at a cost of Rs 140 crore. The college will have 24 classrooms, eight tutorial rooms, 40 faculty offices, as well as department libraries, conference facilities, and a canteen, spread over a built-up area of 18,816.56 sq m. It will reserve two seats in each course for applicants from Roshanpura village, which had donated land for the college. One seat will be reserved for women In January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for Veer Savarkar College, alongside two other major infrastructure projects for DU – a new campus in Surajmal Vihar and another in Dwarka. Together, these projects represented a combined investment of over Rs 600 crore, intended to modernise and expand DU's academic footprint. The Eastern Campus in Surajmal Vihar, spanning 15.25 acres, will cost Rs 373 crore and house programmes such as LLB, LLM, and multi-disciplinary courses. Facilities will include modern classrooms, moot courts, computer labs, and cafeterias. The Western Campus in Dwarka's Sector 22, to cost Rs 107 crore, will have 42 classrooms, digital libraries, and conference halls. The Veer Savarkar College, meanwhile, will offer state-of-the-art facilities across an 18,816 sq m area, located near the Urban Extension Road (UER) highway.

Assembly Monsoon Session: AAP govt used power and water subsidy schemes as political tools, says CM

Accusing the previous AAP government of using electricity and water subsidy schemes as 'political tools', Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday said the earlier regime spent money on advertisements rather than on the creation of assets for the Capital while in power. 'They tried to show… they were offering the free schemes from their own pockets, when in reality, the money belonged to the people,' she said in the Assembly. The revenue surplus of the Delhi government in 2023-24 under the AAP's rule had declined by 55% as compared to the preceding fiscal, the CAG report tabled in the Assembly by Gupta on Monday had said. She demanded that the CAG reports on Finance Accounts and Appropriation Accounts of Delhi for 2023-24 be referred to the Public Accounts Committee for a comprehensive investigation, so that people may know how their money was truly spent. Maintaining that the report exposes the mismanagement and lack of intent of the previous AAP administration, Gupta said, 'The people had hoped that their tax money would be used for building roads, schools, and hospitals. Instead, their hard-earned money was diverted towards so-called free schemes.' She accused the AAP of deliberately neglecting development works and focusing entirely on publicity and propaganda. Gupta alleged that the previous government did not implement several key development schemes as they were associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'Such was the extent of their malice,' she said. 'They claimed that the Centre did not give funds but in reality, they never used the funds given by the Centre for various schemes… In the end, the Centre had to reach the beneficiaries directly,' she added. As AAP MLAs opposed Gupta's claims, four party legislators — Anil Jha, Kuldeep Kumar, Prem Chauhan and Jarnail Singh — were marshalled out. Hitting back, Leader of Opposition Atishi said, 'If the CAG report shows a revenue deficit, the BJP-led Union government is responsible. It has withheld Delhi's share of taxes under the 'share and taxes' scheme, while all other states continue to receive their share… When our MLAs start speaking the truth, they switch off our mic to silence us.' The report pointed out that although the revenue receipts of the government dropped, the gross state domestic product (GSDP) at current prices grew at an average pace of 8.79% during the last five years from Rs 7.93 lakh crore in 2019-20 to Rs 11.08 lakh crore in 2023-24.
