The cost has not been revealed but what was unveiled this week, in a tented siding to select media, was an Avanti West Coast train adorned in bright, swirling colours with images of folk dancing, tapping drums and playing the saxophone. Musical notes and love hearts float about and, in a hippyish Woodstock font, are the capitalised words: 'Together We Roll.'
This is not, apparently, indicative of what happens to passengers in the event of a train crash, but a joyous representation of the ethnicities of staff and communities that are associated with the Avanti network.
The artwork, or livery to give it its technical term, stretches across all seven carriages of the new Evero rolling stock, which, trainspotting nerds will tell you, is Avanti-owner Hitachi Rail's new type of 'bi-mode multiple unit' (which sounds like a gay bouncer).
The livery is bright and jolly, which is a decidedly poor reflection of the general demeanour of travellers who grind up and down the West Coast main line daily, ferried by Avanti which, according to the most recent figures from the Office of Rail and Road, has the worst record for delays in the UK.
The work, said one commuter, had 'all the cachet of Soviet-era socialist realism'. Another raged: 'I'm so sick of this I want to scream.'
Thus comes what Avanti must think is a wizardly piece of sleight of hand, some cheeky misdirection. Passengers weep into their morning cereal at the prospect of another commuter train delay, while Avanti, with much song and dance, reveals the bombastic creativity of artist Baraka Carberry, whose work acts as a sort of invitation to graffiti other trains.
'Nothing like this has been seen on the UK's railways,' chirruped Kathryn O'Brien, Avanti West Coast customer experience director, whose very job title makes one interrogate the soundness of reality.
And nothing like that has been seen for good reason, because we train habitués would rather hope a train operator's mission would be to get the things running on time before they started spraying an artist's indelible – and expensive – endeavours all over them.
Joining this deluded rabbit-hole chorus was even Lord Hendy, Minister for Rail. 'Diversity is the key to success of any industry,' he said. And there we were thinking it might be stuff like: going to the office, costing out exclusive freight lines, or working out ways to improve lighting and air conditioning.
But no, what the railways need, says his lordship, is creative work that goes 'a long way to sparking conversations, encouraging inclusion'.
He added: 'We still have a long way to go until we have a railway which reflects the society we live in.' Indeed, I look forward to one such 'angry' train. A bright red one, presumably, like the frequently cross James in Thomas The Tank Engine.
Given Avanti's poor record, it surely expected a heap of opprobrium to land on it the second it unveiled such a monument to hubris. Yet it went ahead anyway, suggesting it doesn't just ignore its customers, it is positively contemptuous of them.
What a calm and cohesive society needs is not to have multiculture rammed down its throat. A decent society operates instead in a culture of civil co-dependence and mutual appreciation, of earnest endeavour, respect, order, rule of law and wise governance. Although I know, these days, that in itself sounds like Alice in Wonderland.
I love trains. I opt for the railway every time over the car. Yet so often trains are late, the WiFi is deficient and the expense, eye-watering.
But get me to town on time and you can paint my trains in whatever damn colours take your fancy.

Why we love it: Blast beats, pig squeals and spontaneous circle pits, Bushbash's live room couldn't contrast more with the tranquil Showa-era shopping street just outside its doors. The wood cabin-like space sits to the right of a lounge area, which also serves as a dancefloor, merch stand and place to rest your eardrums and grab a drink between bands. The live room fits around 100 and is serviced by speakers that can only be described as unconscionably large for a space of this size. In contrast, the lighting is decidedly modest, with four hanging bulbs and two tiny spots aimed at the stage. Just enough to make sure you can see the band – and any stray limbs that come your way when the pit suddenly opens up.

Kiss has infuriated fans by calling their inclusion in US President Trump's Kennedy Center Honours a 'great honour.' The 80s band has been named alongside soul singer Gloria Gaynor, country star George Strait, and actors Sylvester Stallone and Michael Crawford. This is the first Kennedy Center Honours since President Trump took over as chairman of the arts and culture center in Washington DC earlier this year. The highly controversial move has been pointed to as a sign of encroaching authoritarianism in the US, as Trump's first action was removing Biden-era appointees from the board and stacking it with loyalists. Yesterday, in a press conference to announce the honourees, Trump said: 'We'll be honouring one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Kiss. So Kiss was formed in 1973 in New York City by founding band members – and incredible people, by the way – Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss 'Kiss became a global phenomenon. Sold more than 100 million records worldwide and produced 30 gold albums and lots of other things. They produced, they made a fortune. And they're great people and they deserve it and they work hard and they're still. 'And they're going to do something very special. Kiss is going to be here a little bit before the show. I think they're gonna do something very special. We're gonna have a good time.' In response to the announcement, Gene Simmons told TMZ: 'Kiss is the embodiment of the American dream. We are deeply honoured to receive the Kennedy Center Honour.' 'From our earliest days, Kiss has embodied the American ideal that all things are possible and that hard work pays off,' adds Paul Stanley. 'The prestige of the Kennedy Center Honours cannot be overstated, and I accept this on behalf of the long legacy of Kiss and all of the band members who helped create our iconic band.' Many Kiss fans are extremely disappointed by the band's reaction, accusing them of capitulating to Trump's growing censorship of American arts. One Reddit thread saw users embroiled in a heated discussion, with @Mr_pootatohead writing: 'Is Gene going to lick Trump's boots now after saying, a couple of years ago, 'I knew him before he entered politics. Look what that gentleman did to this country and the polarization — got all the cockroaches to rise to the top. Once upon a time, you were embarrassed to be publicly racist and out there with conspiracy theories. Now it's all out in the open because he allowed it.' Would they be allowed to wear their drag-inspired costumes?' One user disagreed, writing: 'They should decline because you don't agree politically? I've been a KISS fan since the beginning but if they support this regime, I'm out.' @OxfordBuckeye agreed: 'Always thought Kiss were overrated garbage. This proves it.' Indeed, Trump made no mention of how critical members of the band have been of him in the past. In January 2021, as Trump sought to call the results of the 2020 election into question, Stanley described his actions as 'abhorrent,' 'mob boss behavior,' and 'a true danger to our democracy.' Four months earlier, Stanley also wrote on Twitter: 'REGARDLESS of who you support, it is incendiary & abhorrent for ANY candidate to say 'If I lose, the election is rigged. It's an insult to those who have fought for the free, safe elections we have and dangerously implies that citizens who don't share your views are the enemy.' Glasgow has become a popular filming location for major Hollywood productions. Glasgow has once again taken centre stage in a major Hollywood production, with filming for Spider-Man 4: Brand New Day currently under way in the city. Crowds have gathered to watch Hollywood superstar Tom Holland perform impressive stunts as Marvel's web-slinging hero, with parts of the city centre transformed into bustling New York streets. ‌ In recent years, Scotland's largest city has become a favourite among film-makers, with its mix of grand architecture and adaptable streets providing the perfect backdrop for a range of productions. From gritty urban dramas to high-octane blockbusters, Glasgow has played host to an impressive line-up of films. ‌ The Batman (2022) DC's dark, atmospheric blockbuster made use of the gothic surroundings of Glasgow Necropolis, the Victorian cemetery that became a key setting thanks to its striking architecture. ‌ Starring Robert Pattinson in the title role, the film's moody visuals were a natural fit for the city's historic landmarks. Pattinson is set to return for a sequel in 2027, though it is not yet confirmed whether Glasgow will feature again. Tetris (2023) The story of Henk Rogers and his fight to secure the rights to the iconic video game brought a very different aesthetic to Glasgow. Set in the 1980s, the film saw parts of the city convincingly transformed into Soviet-era Moscow, with its architecture standing in for the Soviet Union. Welsh actor Taron Egerton played Rogers and, despite his moustache disguise, was quickly spotted by fans during filming. ‌ Churchill (2017) This historical drama saw Scottish actor Brian Cox portray Winston Churchill in the tense days leading up to the D-Day landings. Several scenes were shot around Scotland, including Glasgow's George Street, which doubled for wartime settings. 1917 (2019) Sam Mendes's award-winning First World War epic featured Glasgow's Govan Graving Docks, transformed through CGI into a canal. ‌ Inspired by the experiences of real-life soldiers, the film starred George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman and was acclaimed for its immersive cinematography and striking set design. World War Z (2013) Brad Pitt led the cast of this zombie blockbuster, which turned George Square into the streets of Philadelphia during an undead outbreak. ‌ At the time, it was one of the largest productions ever to film in the city and went on to become the highest-grossing zombie film of all time.
