War erupts in affluent suburb as backlash escalates over a change at a small beach and locals lawyer up while a Hollywood star steps in

Residents of an affluent Sydney suburb have sought legal action to stop a bring-your-own-alcohol proposal at a beachfront kiosk. Five Watsons Bay locals, including Hollywood director George Miller, are fighting Woollahra Council's proposal to allow patrons to drink at the Camp Cove Kiosk. However, in a report seen by Daily Mail, submissions to the council were overwhelmingly positive and in favour of the proposal, following a successful trial. The council approved the six-month trial of BYO alcohol at Camp Cove Kiosk from last December to June. Alcohol was permitted between lunchtime and 6pm in winter, and until 7pm in summer. Beachgoers are allowed to drink alcohol on the beach at Camp Cove, but the operators of the kiosk needed the council's permission to allow BYO at the venue. Council staff have now recommended against extending the trial, with one councillor warning the plan could alert people to the lack of drinking restrictions on the council's beaches. Hollywood filmmaker Miller, who directed Mad Max, expressed concern the BYO proposal could attract crowds of partygoers. He shared his concerns broken glass from bottles could end up in the sand, particularly near a calm section of the cove used by families. 'It's the last spot of all the beaches you would want the risk of BYO alcohol because of its proximity to Kiddie Corner,' he told The Sydney Morning Herald. Omer Farhy, operator of the 35-seat venue, told a meeting of the council's finance, community and services committee on Monday he 'did not support drunken behaviour'. The Camp Cove Kiosk operator said he wanted to introduce 'an elegant and relaxed way to enjoy the beach with a sunset BYO drink'. Most submissions from Watsons Bay and Vaucluse residents welcomed the proposal, but police and a handful of locals raised safety concerns. Watsons Bay resident Allen Linz, who lives next to the kiosk, said he was already frustrated by the existing noise coming from patrons. He claimed adding alcohol into the mix would only worsen the problem. Mr Linz argued the council should ban alcohol on Camp Cove Beach entirely. Lawyer Adam Moxon Simpson, who represents Miller, Linz and three other unidentified residents, told the meeting Kiddie Corner needed to be protected. 'Now is not the time for more alcohol on beaches, and Kiddie Corner is not the place; it's a precious place for families,' he said. Out of the 77 submissions received by council staff on the proposal, 48 were positive. The majority of the committee voted to grant the kiosk a 12-month licence to operate BYO alcohol. It included conditions for plastic cups and to only permit booze from noon, and would be reviewed in a year. A Woollahra Council spokesperson said: 'This matter is yet to go to a meeting of the full council for determination. Councillors will vote on this on August 25.'

TV star makes an embarrassing mistake about the end of a VERY high-profile AFL romance

Footy broadcaster Garry Lyon had an awkward moment while on air as he mistakenly thought AFL star Harley Reid's relationship with AFLW player Yasmin Duursma was still going. The West Coast Eagles midfielder, 20, had been dating Duursma since January last year, but the footballers quietly split last month. Lyon, who mustn't be up to date with footy's dating news, was speaking to Duursma's brother Xavier, who plays for Essendon, on SEN Breakfast on Tuesday. The Fox Sports star and co-host Tim Watson had been talking about Duursma's younger brother Willem when Lyon said, 'And your brother-in-law, Harley, he could come in as well.' Duursma laughed and Lyon quickly realised his blunder, saying, 'Oh, hang on.' Watson interjected with, 'Oh, Garry, you need to catch up with the news, mate.' Duursma commented: 'We still like Harley'. Lyon was apologetic about the mistake. 'No, good. I should have checked that. Sorry about that.' In July, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Reid had removed Duursma's initials from his Instagram bio, while Duursma deleted pictures of the pair from her own feed. The couple, who had known each other since childhood, made their red-carpet debut together at last year's Brownlow Medal. Meanwhile, speculation is mounting that Reid could sign the 'biggest deal in AFL history'. Essendon legend Tim Watson announced on SEN Breakfast that St Kilda had offered $25million to lure Reid back to Victoria. 'They've also made a Godfather offer to Harley Reid of $25 million over 12 years. That's the number that's coming via the West Coast Eagles at the moment,' Watson said, referring to the 'offer you can't refuse' line from the famous movie. 'I'm not making this up. This is what I was told yesterday. This has absolutely got everybody in the footy world spinning. 'That's the information that I received, that the West Coast Eagles believe that there's been an offer tabled by St Kilda around $25 million over 12 years.' Reid is contracted at the Eagles until the end of 2026.

Aussie swimming queen Kaylee McKeown finds love with ex-footy star after heartache

Aussie swim queen Kaylee McKeown has gone public with her new man, former North Melbourne AFL player Declan Watson. McKeown, 24, won the 100m/200m backstroke double at the recent world championships in Singapore – and she did it while battling a shoulder complaint. Taking to Instagram on Monday, McKeown uploaded a series of images from her Uluru holiday with Watson, who is now a lawyer. It also showed McKeown – who has already won five Olympic gold medals in her decorated career – has moved on from her ex-boyfriend, fellow Dolphins swimmer Brendan Smith. The couple were together for roughly four years and were based on the Gold Coast leading into the Paris Olympics under esteemed coach Michael Bohl. But after going their separate ways, McKeown relocated back to the Sunshine Coast to be closer to family. Taking to Instagram, McKeown uploaded a series of images from her holiday to Uluru with her lawyer boyfriend And now she is clearly loved-up with Watson, who also posted photos of McKeown on his Instagram page. The 26-year-old was drafted by North Melbourne in 2016, but two ACL injuries saw the key defender never play a senior game for the Kangaroos. He was then de-listed in 2019 and works in Brisbane as a lawyer. In the lead-up to the Paris Games last year, McKeown's laid-back nature was on full display in an interview. 'Everyone kind of always puts the Olympics as this big thing,' she said. 'For me, I just learnt that it's a pool in a different city. 'At the end of the day, it's just me diving in and doing what I can do best.' McKeown's brother Lachlan also provided a hilarious moment poolside in Paris when asked how nervous Kaylee was ahead of the 100m backstroke final. His graphic overshare resulted in a mortified Sharon McKeown making a throat-cutting gesture so he would keep quiet during a Channel Nine interview. She eventually composed herself to add: '(As her mum), I was nervous. 'Regardless of the outcome, you are still proud of your kids, whether they win, lose – they are here (competing at the Olympics).
