Bhatt entered the classroom and saw Chauhan repeatedly slapping his son on the face and ears. Upon being confronted, Chauhan began apologising and said, 'He had missed two days of class, during which important topics were taught.'
Past abuse, medical injuries, and police action
After the incident, the boy told his parents that this was not the first time Chauhan had hit him. A relative of the family then contacted the child helpline, and a formal police complaint was lodged. Medical tests confirmed that the student had sustained serious injuries, both eardrums were torn and bleeding.

Meet 65-year-old ‘Gangster Granny': UK's drug cartel mastermind Deborah Mason, jailed for 20 years over £80m Cocaine trade
Deborah Mason(left), Roseanne Mason(right) (Source: Metropolitan police) A 65-year-old grandmother masterminded one of UK's most sophisticated drug trafficking operations, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Deborah Mason, infamously nicknamed the 'Queen Bee' and 'Gangster Granny,' ran a sprawling family-led drugs cartel that trafficked more than a ton of cocaine worth up to £80 million across the country. Mason and seven of her relatives, including her sister and children, operated the high-level narcotics ring over a seven-month period from April to November 2023, reported The Guardian . On Friday, she was sentenced in a London courtroom alongside other key members of the syndicate. The court heard that Mason's gang used a network of couriers to transport massive quantities of imported cocaine. The drugs were distributed from London to several major cities including Bradford, Leicester, Birmingham, Bristol, and Cardiff. The cartel's value of cocaine ranged between £23 million and £35 million, while its street value was estimated at a whopping £80 million. Despite the scale of the operation, prosecutors noted that Mason's relatives were not coerced into joining the syndicate, but were instead "motivated by financial benefit." Mason's 29-year-old daughter, Roseanne Mason, played a crucial role in the cartel's logistics. She was responsible for managing collections of the drug shipments. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In a show of how deeply involved the family was, Roseanne even babysat the children of other couriers so they could continue working uninterrupted. She was sentenced to 11 years in prison for her part in the operation. Other members of the gang received lengthy prison terms as well, with sentences ranging from 13 to 15 years based on their individual roles in the criminal enterprise. The Metropolitan Police launched a thorough investigation into the drug ring, employing a range of surveillance tactics, including analysis of extensive call data and physical tracking of suspects. Acting on critical intelligence, most of the gang members were apprehended in May 2024.

Court orders probe into custodial irregularities by police in celebratory firing case
1 2 Panchkula: In a case involving celebratory firing and alleged custodial misconduct, the sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM) of Kalka, Abhimanyu Rajput, has directed the police commissioner to initiate a departmental inquiry and submit an action-taken report. The court's intervention follows serious procedural lapses in the investigation and treatment of the accused. The case surfaced after a video circulated on social media showed 18-year-old Parvesh Sharma allegedly firing a weapon during panchayat election celebrations on the night of June 16-17. He was booked under Section 288 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 25(9) of the Arms Act, 1959, and later granted bail. His co-accused, Neeraj, was arrested with a country-made .12-bore "katta," prompting the addition of more serious charges. However, during the July 18 hearing, the court found that the investigating officer failed to justify the application of Section 27(2) of the Arms Act, which pertains to prohibited arms. Neither the IO nor the SHO could confirm whether the weapon was automatic or military-grade. Further, Neeraj was not lodged in Central Jail, Ambala, as directed, and alleged custodial assault. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He was presented in court without a medical exam, and a medico-legal report was only prepared after judicial intervention. The court granted him interim bail on a ₹20,000 personal bond and ordered preservation of CCTV footage from July 15 to 17. In a related development, Parvesh's counsel, Deepanshu Bansal, revealed that his client suffered four injuries in custody and was re-arrested despite bail. The court termed the arrest illegal and ordered a fresh medical examination. The court has also directed that allegations of custodial torture be reported to the sessions judge, in line with a 2019 Punjab and Haryana High Court directive. BOX: Injuries to the accused Quoting the court-ordered medical report, Deepanshu Bansal, counsel for Parvesh (18), stated that he suffered four injuries in custody. He was re-arrested even after being granted bail. Police said that he was arrested in the same case after some other sections were added. Terming it as an illegal arrest, he was again granted bail, and Panchkula chief medical officer was asked to conduct a medical examination. MSID:: 122783825 413 |

J&K man abducted in Niger terror attack; family appeals to Modi govt for help; Indian embassy works for safe release
NEW DELHI: The family of Ranjit Singh, a senior safety officer from Jammu and Kashmir abducted during a terror attack in Niger's Dosso region, has appealed to the Indian government for urgent intervention to secure his safe return. Singh, a resident of Chakka Kundi village in Ramban district, was working for Transrail, a transmission line company, when he was taken hostage by unidentified armed attackers on July 15. In a tearful interview to ANI, Singh's wife, Sheila Devi, shared her anguish. 'My husband's name is Ranjit Singh. He works in Niger as a senior safety officer in a transmission lightning company called Transrail. On July 15, I tried to contact him, but since then there has been no communication,' she said. She recounted how, after failing to reach him, she contacted his company, only to learn of a terrorist attack at the worksite. Workers had fled into nearby forests to escape the attackers, and Singh was among those who ran. The next day, on July 16, she received confirmation from her husband's colleagues that Singh had been abducted by the attackers. 'I have no idea in what condition my husband is. My entire life is at stake. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 21st Century Skills Start with Confident Communication Planet Spark Learn More Undo I appeal to the Indian government and higher authorities to please bring my husband home safely,' Sheila Devi said, breaking down in tears. She also mentioned she has three young children and an ailing family to care for. Singh's father, Mohan Lal Sen, also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene. 'We want to tell Modiji to act. The Government of India should work to bring him back. We have been suffering for the last 5-6 days. He has small children. We are very worried, where is he? Has he eaten anything or not?' he said. Singh's mother, Sadhu Devi, is distraught. Family members said she has not eaten or slept since hearing of her son's abduction. The Indian Embassy in Niger confirmed that two other Indians lost their lives in the attack, which took place near an electrical line construction site protected by Nigerien forces. The embassy said it is working with local authorities to repatriate the bodies of the two deceased Indians and to ensure Singh's safe release. The terror attack occurred about 100 km from Niger's capital Niamey. Arab News reported that unidentified armed attackers ambushed a Nigerien army unit providing security at the site. Niger has been in political turmoil since a July 2023 military coup ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The country faces security threats from jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State, with border regions and sparsely populated areas exploited for terror activities, as noted in the US State Department's 2023 report. The Indian Embassy has issued a security advisory urging all Indian nationals in Niger to remain vigilant, while Singh's family waits desperately for updates.
