‘Surprise' Ed Sheeran appearance lights up Fleadh Cheoil

has made a surprise appearance at this year's Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in
Wexford
, hosting a performance at a local pub.
Rumours had been circulating since last week that the Galway Girl singer would attend, with organisers saying these were 'just rumours', until Tuesday.
Those involved in the festival received notice a 'little bit in advance' of his arrival.
The unplanned performance caused a bit of a headache for those involved in event control, one person involved said, laughing, with an influx of attendees hoping to catch a glimpse of the A Team singer.

By the time Sheeran arrived on Tuesday at the Sky & The Ground pub, on the town's South Main Street, large crowds had already gathered and surrounded it.
He performed several well-known hits, including Nancy Mulligan, a song inspired by his Wexford-born grandmother Anne Mary Sheeran, who died in 2023 at the age of 98.
He also performed a cover of Wild Mountain Thyme with trad group Biird and later sang Perfect for crowds outside who failed to get a spot inside.

Sheeran, who was born and raised in England, recently told how he identifies culturally as Irish.
The 34-year-old, who was brought up in Suffolk, has a large Irish family and said he would spend his holidays in the country as a child.
'I class my culture as Irish. I think that's what I grew up with,' he told The Louis Theroux Podcast.
The performance has generated buzz around the town of Wexford, which was hosting a festival already outperforming last year's numbers.

Between 80,000 and 100,000 are estimated to have attended on Sunday, according to organisers, who expect more than 750,000 to attend throughout the week, compared with about 650,000 attendees last year.

'We didn't know what or who. It was very secretive and very hush, hush but we got on quite well with them'. It was only last week, the publican learned his historic boozer was to play host to a set from superstar Ed Sheeran. He said: 'I'd say about four days ago I learned it was Ed Sheeran . I then found myself thrown into organising this massive thing. It's been MI6 level of preparations. The last thing we wanted was 20,000 people turning up on our doorstep'. The secret WhatsApp group continued right up to the moment Ed appeared in their bar. He said: 'We were getting minute by minute updates like 'currently on the M50, this is our estimated time of arrival'. 'In fairness, everyone put their heads together and made sure we were pretty well prepared when he arrived. TRAD MUSIC 'I think if you've got family that's Irish and you're brought up with that as your culture, who is someone else to tell you what you grew up with. 'And this is the argument I have with people sometimes. Galway Girl is seen in trad head circles as the Anti-Christ but I know that it's been a gateway drug for a lot of kids to pick up instruments and learning trad and discovering new and old trad. Electric Picnic 2025: Inhaler, Jazzy and David Gray among 11 more acts added to line-up
Inhaler , Jazzy and Noel and Mike Hogan are among the 11 new acts joining the line-up for this year's Electric Picnic festival. Irish alternative rock band Inhaler, whose frontman is Elijah Hewson , will return to the Electric Picnic stage after performing there in 2023. English singer-songwriter David Gray will play in the legend's slot on Sunday night. Gray is best known for his hit songs Babylon and This Year's Love. Noel and Mike Hogan of The Cranberries are reuniting for the first time since Dolores O'Riordan 's death in 2018 to perform some of the band's most popular songs. They will be joined by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and a special mystery guest. READ MORE American disco band Nile Rodgers & Chic are returning, having made regular appearances at the festival since 2009. Irish rock band The Saw Doctors will continue their 40th year anniversary tour with a set at the music festival– the band was formed in 1986 in Tuam, Co Galway . ‘Spice Girls of trad' on their role as ambassadors for Culture Night 2025
Thousands of free events will take place across the country on September 19 When Lisa Canny, the founder of the all-female trad supergroup Biird, got a call to perform alongside Ed Sheeran at the Fleadh Cheoil, she and her bandmates had just wrapped up after performing at All Together Now over the weekend. Canny and her all-female trad collective band – often tagged as the Spice Girls of trad – have become one of Ireland's most talked-about acts of the last year. They are fresh, fierce and wildly talented, with an energy that has shaken up the trad scene.
