Israeli forensic institute confirms remains of hostage Shiri Bibas

Saudi Gazette22-02-2025
GAZA CITY — Israel's national forensic center has confirmed that the body of an Israeli hostage handed over by Hamas late Friday was that of Shiri Bibas, according to Israeli media reports on Saturday. The Red Cross retrieved her body from Gaza before transferring it to the Israeli military.Following forensic testing, the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute verified that the remains belonged to Bibas, as reported by the Jerusalem Post andChannel 12.However, Israeli authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the identification. Palestinian resistance factions in Gaza had earlier handed over the remains of four Israeli hostages on Thursday, including Bibas, her two children, Kfir and Ariel, and captive Oded Lifshitz.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later alleged that Hamas had mistakenly returned the body of another woman instead of Bibas. In response, Hamas stated that an error or mix-up could have occurred due to Israeli bombardment in Gaza.
The ceasefire agreement, which took effect on January 19, halted Israel's military operations that began on October 7, 2023. The war has resulted in the deaths of more than 48,000 people, mostly women and children, and has left Gaza in devastation. — Agencies

Mohamed Salah calls out UEFA for omitting Gaza death details in tribute to Suleiman al-Obeid

LONDON — Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has criticised UEFA for omitting key details in its tribute to Palestinian football legend Suleiman al-Obeid, who was killed this week in Gaza. On Thursday, the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) confirmed that Obeid, 41, was killed in an Israeli attack while waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip. Nicknamed the 'Pelé of Palestinian football,' Obeid scored more than 100 goals in his career, including two in 24 international appearances. In a post on X on Friday, UEFA wrote: 'Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the 'Palestinian Pelé'. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times.' Responding on Saturday, Salah, 33, called out the governing body for failing to mention the circumstances of Obeid's death. 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?' the Egypt international wrote. Israel launched its military offensive in Gaza after the Hamas-led attacks on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. Since then, more than 61,300 people have been killed in Gaza, according to local health Hamas-run health ministry said at least 38 people had been killed and 491 injured in the past 24 hours UN reported earlier this month that at least 1,373 Palestinians have died seeking food since late May, when the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation — a US- and Israeli-backed organisation — began operating aid distribution has previously used his platform to urge for humanitarian aid access to Gaza and called on 'world leaders to come together to prevent further slaughter of innocent souls' amid the ongoing conflict. — BBC

Israeli Finance Minister says he's lost faith in Netanyahu's Gaza war strategy

TEL AVIV — Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said Saturday he has lost confidence in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of the war in the Gaza Strip, denouncing the government's newly approved 'gradual plan' to occupy the enclave. Smotrich, a far-right minister who has long pushed for the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and Israeli settlement in the territory, said in a video on X that during Friday's Security Cabinet meeting he 'lost faith that the Prime Minister can and wants to lead the Israeli army to decisive victory.' The plan, backed by Netanyahu and approved by the cabinet, calls for a phased occupation of Gaza and moving Palestinians from the north to the south. The proposal has faced opposition from Israeli security officials, who warn it could endanger the lives of hostages held by Hamas as well as Israeli soldiers. 'Netanyahu and the cabinet decided to carry out a military operation whose goal is not victory, but to pressure Hamas for a partial prisoner deal,' Smotrich said, urging the prime minister to reconvene the cabinet and commit to 'no stopping halfway, no partial deal — this time we go for a decisive, clear step toward victory.' Smotrich has repeatedly opposed limiting Israel's campaign in Gaza to airstrikes, advocating instead for an all-out ground offensive and permanent settlement. Israel's war on Gaza has killed more than 61,300 people since October 2023, according to health officials in the enclave, and has left the territory on the brink of famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military campaign. — Agencies

Mass rallies across Europe demand end to Israeli attacks on Gaza

LONDON — Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators marched in cities across Europe on Saturday in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, calling for an immediate end to Israeli attacks and unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged enclave. In London, protesters joined the 30th National March for Palestine, rallying under the theme 'Stop Starving Gaza.' Marchers moved from Russell Square to the Prime Minister's Office, waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans accusing the British government of complicity in what they described as genocide. Organizers, including the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, urged the UK to act against 'Israel's starvation policy' in Gaza. In Stockholm, hundreds gathered at Odenplan to condemn Israeli plans to occupy Gaza City and US support for Israel. The demonstrators marched toward the Foreign Ministry carrying signs denouncing the attacks. Israel's Security Cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's widely opposed occupation plan early Friday. Protests also filled the streets of Amsterdam, with demonstrators demanding immediate aid access to Gaza, while rallies in Spain — including Madrid — saw crowds chant 'End to genocide' and bang pots and pans to draw attention to starvation in Gaza. In Geneva, thousands gathered at Jardin Anglais, staging a sit-in and chanting in English, French and Arabic against Israeli attacks and the blockade. Many waved Palestinian flags and protested international support for Israel. The Health Ministry in Gaza said Friday that 21 Palestinians were killed and more than 341 injured while trying to get humanitarian aid in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed in such incidents to 1,743 since May 27. It also reported that 212 people — including 98 children — have died from famine and malnutrition as the humanitarian crisis deepens. Israel resumed military operations in Gaza on March 18, breaking a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement reached in January. Since then, 9,862 people have been killed and 40,809 wounded, according to Gaza health authorities. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military campaign in Gaza. — Agencies
