Nintendo Switch 2 small print causes confusion over upgrades and game-key cards

Metro25-04-2025
Nintendo has been muddying the water again when it comes to the Switch 2 launch line-up, as visual upgrades for Super Mario Party Jamboree come with a strange caveat.
Nintendo's messaging around the Switch 2 has been a mess ever since its big reveal earlier this month, and while the company finally offered some clarification around game prices in the UK this week, a whole new can of worms has now opened concerning game-key cards.
If you're unfamiliar, game-key cards are presented as an alternative way to buy and share physical games. Unlike normal physical Switch titles, which come with the game data on the cartridge, these cards are used as a key to download the game from the Nintendo eShop. Once it is downloaded, you then play the game by inserting the card into your system.
These game-key cards aren't tied to your Nintendo Account, so they can be shared or resold like normal physical games, but the lack of game data on the cartridge, coupled with the reliance on an online store, has raised some eyebrows among physical collectors.
The bad news is, a big chunk of the Switch 2 launch line-up has adopted this method. As highlighted by Gematsu, almost all physical third party Switch 2 games in Japan, except Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, use game-key cards. Only Nintendo's first party games, like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, use standard game cards.
It appears to be a similar situation in the West, albeit with some differences. Pre-orders on UK retailer Smyths show Hitman World Of Assassination – Signature Edition, Street Fighter 6: Year 1-2 Fighters Edition, and Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster all use game-key cards.
Meanwhile, Amazon listings in the US show the likes of Yakuza 0 Director's Cut, Sonic X Shadows Generations, and Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess all carry the game-key card logo on the box – so it's likely this will apply in the UK too.
Switch 2 game pre-orders have been up in Japan for a few hours, revealing all physical third-party games (so far—except Cyberpunk 2077) that are not "Nintendo Switch 2 Editions" to be shipping on game-key cards (requires internet to download the full game). — Gematsu (@gematsu.com) 2025-04-23T18:57:30.823Z
Notably, indie publisher Marvelous has released a statement (via Nintendo Life) to clarify the physical editions of Rune Factory: Guardians Of Azuma, Story Of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, and Daemon X Machina Titanic Scion in the West will have the full game on the cartridge – unlike Japan where it is a game-key card.
These key cards are presumably a cheaper way for developers to distribute physical games, and while it does offer advantages over buying digitally, old school physical collectors will be perturbed by the amount of Switch 2 games already adopting this approach.
It appears these game-key cards haven't eliminated a greater evil: the dreaded 'code-in-a-box'. According to a listing on US retailer Best Buy, physical copies of EA's Split Fiction on Switch 2 will not include any game card at all, which means you won't be able to resell it.
Overall, while many might not be bothered by these differences, as digital downloads are around 90% of all sales nowadays, the lack of consistency across physical versions isn't exactly reassuring for those who prefer boxed copies, especially as they're the most consumer-friendly option.
The ever expanding grey areas concerning the Switch 2 have carried over to the upgraded versions of Nintendo's first party games too. While these include the full game on the cartridge, users on ResetEra have spotted some small print to suggest the improvements aren't quite as comprehensive as previously thought.
According to Nintendo's website, the Switch 2 version of Super Mario Party Jamboree, which comes with the added Jamboree TV mode, supports up to 1440p resolution when docked to the TV. However, a disclaimer at the bottom states this upgraded resolution is for 'Jamboree TV only'.
This implies the improved 1440p resolution only applies to the new game mode, and isn't an upgrade across Super Mario Party Jamboree at large. An Amazon UK listing appears to support this, with the 1440p docked resolution and 1080p resolution in handheld and tabletop modes being listed as 'Jamboree TV only'. More Trending
This is probably because Jamboree TV has been built as a separate entity, but it feels very low effort when Nintendo is asking for £16.99 to upgrade to the Switch 2 version. This edition does boast a 'visually enhanced and improved frame rate' across the board, so there are some blanket upgrades, but it is still an odd caveat to throw into the mix – especially as it's only being brought up now.
This wrinkle has sparked concern for other Switch 2 Edition games, with Kirby And The Forgotten Land, which comes with a Star-Crossed World expansion, also boasting 'improved graphics and frame rate' – although without any small print as of yet. This version, which is set to launch on August 28, also costs £16.99 to upgrade or £66.99 physically.
Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games which do not feature any new content, such as The Legend Of Zelda remasters, have cheaper upgrades of £7.99 each.
When coupled with the furore around the price for Mario Kart World, and confusion around prices for games at large, it's clear Nintendo has a task on its hands communicating all this information to the average consumer – even if it clearly hasn't slowed down pre-orders.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 launch date and beta announced in gameplay trailer

Activision has showcased what to expect from this year's Call Of Duty, including a new PvE mode and expanded progression. After a mountain of leaks, Activision has officially pulled back the curtain on Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7. During Gamescom Opening Night Live, the upcoming shooter received its first gameplay trailer which confirmed a number of details, including the title's release date. As outed by leaks beforehand, Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 launches worldwide on November 14, 2025 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Notably, despite promises from Microsoft to bring the franchise to Nintendo's console as part of a 10-year deal, there was no mention of a Switch 2 version. If you want to try it out before this date, Activision is holding an open beta for all players on October 5, 2025. You can get three days early access to the beta starting on October 2 if you pre-order Black Ops 7 too. The game will remain at the usual price of £69.99 in the UK. Like Black Ops 3, Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 features a co-op campaign for up to four players. The story itself is set in 2035, 40 years after the events of Black Ops 6, as David Mason leads an elite team on a covert mission to the Mediterranean city of Avalon. Based on the trailer, it looks like it's leaning harder on the psychological elements, with roads suspended in the air, horror-esque sequences, and even a giant Godzilla-like character. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Weirdly, after it leaked last week, Activision spoiled what you unlock when you complete the campaign. After you complete all the missions, you'll unlock the 'Endgame', which is a 1-32 player PvE experience set on the Avalon map. In this mode, you'll complete missions to level up your character and gain abilities, but if you die, you'll lose all your progress and have to start over. At launch on the multiplayer side, Black Ops 7 will have sixteen 6v6 maps (including three from Black Ops 2) and two 20v20 Skirmish maps, with environments spanning futuristic Tokyo to the frozen landscape of Alaska. More Trending The omnimovement system from the last entry will also be back, albeit in an 'evolved' fashion according to Activision. As part of the Co-Op Campaign in Black Ops 7, the team is unleashing something bold: Endgame. You've never seen anything like this in a Call of Duty Campaign before. — Call of Duty (@CallofDuty) August 19, 2025 While not the main focus of the trailer, Zombies will also be back, along with the next edition of Dead Ops Arcade – a top-down twin stick shooter which was last seen in Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. For the first time in the series, player progression will be spread across every mode in Black Ops 7. So when you're playing the campaign, you'll earn XP and weapon upgrades in the multiplayer, Zombies, and Call Of Duty: Warzone. More is set to be announced about this year's Zombies and multiplayer modes at Call Of Duty Next, which will take place on September 30, 2025. Kirby Air Riders release date announced as creator reveals why he's making it

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has lifted the lid on his upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 title Kirby Air Riders, which looks like a widespread expansion of the original. One of the most unexpected announcements during the Switch 2 reveal in April was Kirby Air Riders, a sequel to 2003's Kirby Air Ride on the Nintendo GameCube. The original didn't set the world alight, with overly simplistic one-button controls and limited modes, so a sequel seems like an odd proposition – especially when it comes not long after fellow racer Mario Kart World. While some fans speculated that Nintendo greenlit Kirby Air Riders as a favour to director Masahiro Sakurai, in exchange for a new Super Smash Bros. game, a 45-minute Nintendo Direct dedicated to Kirby Air Riders revealed the idea for a sequel came from elsewhere. 'You might be wondering why I ended up creating a new Kirby Air Ride game,' Sakurai said in the presentation. 'There was a strong request from [Shinya] Takahashi, head of software development at Nintendo, and [Satoshi] Mitsuhara, the president of HAL Laboratory, Inc. at the time. 'At the time, I was working on the DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and wasn't really able to get around to the request. But I managed to complete a written proposal at high speed.' In the presentation, Sakurai covered all the new additions (and general basics) of Kirby Air Riders in some detail. The biggest change is that it's no longer a one-button racing game. Along with the 'boost charge' to drift around corners for bursts of speed, there's now a 'special button' to unleash power-ups specific to each character. These range from attacks to damage other racers, with Kirby unleashing a sword flurry, while others like King Dedede possess a turbo hammer to launch themselves forward at great speed. Others on the roster include Kirby staples such as Meta Knight, Magalor, and Banana Waddle Dee. More Trending Whereas Kirby was the only playable character in the original who could ride different machines and use copy abilities to transform, this has been expanded to the whole roster in the sequel. Both the characters and the machines possess different stats too, in a similar vein to Mario Kart. City Trial, a core mode from Kirby Air Ride, is back too. Here you roam an open area with up to 15 other players, either CPUs, locally, or against others online, to collect power-ups to boost your machine's stats, before you compete in a mini-game with your upgraded vehicle to determine the winner. These range from racing sprints, battles, a gliding mini-game, and Target Flight where you hit score panels. For anyone who has played the original, it all looks familiar but with more robust options and a greater level of chaos. Sakurai has promised there are 'still a lot of things' in Kirby Air Riders they 'weren't able to cover' in this Direct too, so it might be expanded in other ways. As confirmed in the Direct, Kirby Air Riders launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 20, 2025, priced at £58.99 in the UK. As such, this might be Nintendo's Christmas title, although we're still waiting on a release date for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. Nintendo Direct announced for tomorrow but it's not what you're hoping for

A surprise Nintendo Direct is happening this week, but it's dedicated to a Switch 2 exclusive nobody was asking for. Video game leaks are so prevalent, it usually means most Nintendo Direct presentations are rumoured well ahead of time, especially since the advent of the Switch 2, but Nintendo has managed to keep its latest announcement under wraps right until the last moment. As announced first on the Nintendo Today app (and later on X), a Nintendo Direct will take place on Tuesday, August 19 at 2pm UK time. Unlike the recent Partner Showcase and Indie World presentations, it will feature games from Nintendo's first party slate. Or rather one game. If you're hoping for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond or Splatoon Raiders, you'll be out of luck though. This 'in-depth look' is dedicated entirely to Kirby Air Riders, for a whopping 45 minutes. For a comparison, the Directs dedicated to Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza – the biggest Switch 2 exclusives so far – were both around 17 minutes long. So this is a serious amount of time to dedicate to the sequel to what was a very simple game. The reason for this lengthy runtime might be the creator at the helm. Kirby Air Riders is directed by the actual creator of Kirby, Masahiro Sakurai, who is best known today as the man behind the Super Smash Bros. series. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. This is the first Kirby game Sakurai has worked on since its predecessor Kirby Air Ride, a single-button racing game which came out on the Nintendo GameCube in 2003. The original isn't exactly held in high regard, even among Kirby sickos, so it's puzzling why Nintendo is putting so much energy into a belated sequel, whose basic gameplay is likely to be quite similar to Mario Kart. More Trending Many fans have posited the idea that Nintendo may have greenlit Kirby Air Riders as a favour to Sakurai, in exchange for him working on a new Smash Bros. game. Although it's unlikely that'll ever be admitted to publicly, even if it is true. Following the Direct announcement, Sakurai has promised there'll be 'a lot more information' on Kirby Air Riders from both his X account and the newly launched social media accounts for the title. He also posted a picture of his cat, because why not. Considering we're getting a dedicated Direct for Kirby Air Riders before Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, it's possible the former could be released sooner than expected. With the Switch 2 version of Kirby And The Forgotten Land set to arrive later this month on August 28 too, we might be in for a Kirby onslaught over the next couple of months. This Nintendo Direct will be broadcast just hours before Gamescom Opening Night Live, which is set to kick off tomorrow at 7pm BST. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter.
