Goldfish Swim School encourages early swim lessons to prevent drownings

AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Goldfish Swim School in Amherst is joining a global effort to raise awareness about swim safety as part of The World's Largest Swim Lesson, an annual drowning prevention event. The school offers free lessons to local families while sharing water safety tips. General Manager Nick Patterson said starting children in swimming lessons as early as four months old is critical. 'That's why we open our doors at four months old and continue up to 12 years,' Patterson said. 'Getting kids involved in the water early means that by age one to four, they're able to swim on their own, without floaties of course, with parent supervision.' According to Patterson, drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4. He said lessons can reduce the risk by 88 percent. Instructors teach practical life-saving skills, including the 'sea otter back float,' which helps children float and breathe if they find themselves struggling in the water. 'All they need to do is roll over to their back so they can get that rescue breath and continue swimming to safety,' Patterson said. Children are also taught how to safely exit the pool using a technique called the 'fin-fin belly flipper.' 'It's grabbing the wall with both arms, putting their belly against the wall, and guiding their leg out of the water to push them up to safety,' he said. Beyond physical safety, Patterson said early swimming education helps build confidence in the water, especially for families where parents never learned to swim themselves. 'A lot of parents bring their kids here because they grew up scared of the water and don't want that for their children,' Patterson said. The school also recommends parents dress their children in bright-colored swimsuits for visibility and ensure they wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket near open water. Whether heading to the pool, lake, or any body of water this summer, experts say ensuring your child can swim is one of the best ways to keep them safe. Massive water safety effort underway to reduce drownings in New Jersey — which kill dozens a year

A New Jersey nonprofit has launched an initiative seeking to reduce death by drowning by 30% by 2030 just as summer is about to kick into full gear. Drowning is a national epidemic — and the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 across the country as well as the second leading cause of unintentional injury for those ages 5-14. The Garden State, with rich aquatic resources including miles of coastline and a bounty of lakes, rivers, pools and water parks, sees an average of 64 drowning deaths each year, 10 of which are children under 14. 4 An average of 64 drowning deaths occur in New Jersey each year. Thomas P. Costello via Imagn Content Services, LLC Advertisement The New Jersey Swim Safety Alliance (NJSSA), a nonprofit dedicated to saving lives through education and awareness, has established a coalition of water safety experts working to reduce death by drowning by 30% by the year 2030. This collaborative approach, through a series of summits, conferences and panel discussions, have formulated a six-point game plan to ensure fewer families will know the tragedy of losing a loved one to drowning, called the New Jersey Water Safety Strategy. 4 The New Jersey Swim Safety Alliance has developed a statewide water safety strategy with a coalition of water safety experts and advocacy groups. Eric Fluet Advertisement 'At NJSSA, we believe that swimming is an essential life skill that every child should have access to, and we are resolute in our mission to reduce drowning incidents in New Jersey by 30% by 2030,' wrote Cait Waxler and Lynda Tower, the board chair and executive director of NJSSA. 'While this seems like a simple thing, drowning is a danger that most people do not think about. The New Jersey Water Safety Strategy has transformed our ambitious objective into a strategic plan. It reflects not only our commitment to saving lives, but also our dedication to fostering a collaborative culture of water safety throughout the state.' The first major step is creating a reliable, comprehensive database including all New Jersey drowning deaths, broken out by body of water, ethnicity, age and gender, including survivors who are dealing with lifetime effects. The data will be shared among key stakeholders to support informed decision-making and collaborative efforts. Advertisement A public awareness campaign — including events like the World's Largest Swimming Lesson and National Water Safety Month — will seek to achieve 100% awareness in New Jersey and elevate water safety to an essential life skill. 4 New Jersey has around 130 miles of coastline. Getty Images The coalition will also work to identify the root causes of drowning in the Garden State and develop tactics to proactively prevent it, establishing action-oriented messaging around water safety and providing resources for families seeking low-cost or free swim lessons. Lifeguards are at the front lines of preventing deaths by drowning, and the strategy will include efforts to elevate and support New Jersey's lifeguards, from open water to pools and water parks, both public and private, with class-leading training and development programs. Advertisement NJSSA will build out the financial infrastructure needed to support the New Jersey Water Safety Strategy long-term, creating a unified voice for water safety with a central facilitator of information and services from existing aquatic agencies. Collaboration will be a key component of achieving the coalition's goals, including aligning state authorities, local municipalities and private aquatic facilities statewide. This united force will not only share information and resources, but speak with one educated voice to reduce New Jersey drowning deaths. 4 Drowning is the top cause of death nationwide for children age 1-4. Getty Images 'The presence of water safety groups in the absence of a coordinated effort between them has not been enough to stop this epidemic,' wrote NJSSA founding member Chuck Warner. 'The New Jersey Swim Safety Alliance was founded to build our various aquatic groups into a family. A family that works in concert with one another to slow and even stop this senseless loss of life and serious impairments.'

Aqua-Tots in New Jersey preaches importance of early swim education

New Jersey swim coach teaches her love for the water New Jersey swim coach teaches her love for the water New Jersey swim coach teaches her love for the water As summer nears and families head to beaches, pools and lakes, knowing how to swim isn't just a fun skill. It's a lifesaving necessity. May is National Water Safety Month, a time when instructors and organizations work tirelessly to educate children on how to navigate water safely. With drowning rates increasing between April and September, experts emphasize the importance of early swim education. At Aqua-Tots Swim School in Mount Laurel, Lexi Howell, a former competitive swimmer, is on a mission to make water safety engaging and effective — one lesson and song at a time. Howell teaches even the youngest swimmers, like 7-month-old Eloise, how to acclimate to the water and develop self-rescue instincts. Howell, the aquatics manager and master instructor trainer at Aqua-Tots, says her class is about getting babies comfortable in the water, teaching parents how to work with them and making water safety second nature. CBS News Philadelphia From 4 months to 12 years old, Aqua-Tots classes focus on building confidence and awareness, treating water safety as essential as learning to cross the road. "We would never let a child cross the street without teaching them to look both ways," Aqua-Tots Mount Laurel owner Andrea Sahl said. "Water safety works the same way. We teach kids how deep the water is and how to respect it." With drowning ranking as the second-leading cause of accidental deaths for children aged 5-14, dedicated instructors like Howell are determined to make a difference. Howell loves her job and teaching kids her love for the water. "There's really no better feeling, being able to see them grow comfortable, grow independent, grow to love the water the same way I did when I was little," Howell said. Aqua-Tots Swim School provides year-round indoor swim lessons for children from 4 months to 12 years old. Water Safety tips from Aqua-Tots: Choose bright-colored swimsuits for increased visibility in the water — avoid blue, green and turquoise tones Be mindful of floaties — they can create a false sense of security Create a designated supervision plan whenever children are near water
