BUKIT MERTAJAM: A loud explosion in the early hours of the morning shook residents of Taman Serumpun here, damaging three homes in what police believe was a targeted act of mischief linked to an outstanding debt.
The incident occurred at around 1.05am, prompting an immediate response from local police after a member of the public reported the blast.
Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris, said investigations at the scene revealed that the explosion was caused by firecrackers that had been deliberately thrown into one of the houses.
He said the impact not only damaged the targeted home but also affected two neighbouring properties.
"All three houses sustained damage to their ceilings and yards, while vehicles at two of the premises were also affected.
"We believe the attack may have been related to a debt dispute.
"Preliminary investigations point to two unidentified male suspects who were seen fleeing the scene in a car," he said in a statement.
Police are now urging members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or have information about the suspects to come forward.
Witnesses are advised to contact the district police headquarters or reach out directly to senior investigating officer Assistant Superintendent Assan Alimudin at 012-4418081.
"The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance, and Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957.
"Further investigations are ongoing," he added.
