A new era of rap beef is upon us. One where diss tracks get dropped left and right, forcing curious fans to scramble around trying to catch up.
Enter Joey Bada$$.

Since the Brooklyn rapper kicked things off on New Year's Day with 'The Ruler's Back,' there have been 22 tracks released (and counting), with a flurry of them coming after Joey's recent 'Red Bull Spiral Freestyle' verse, where he addressed the drama that he started. 'Since 'Ruler's Back,' they been tryna measure up,' he rapped. 'Look, my name ain't Rick, but I talk slick, don't press ya luck/ And I ain't taking no words back, I'm with all that (All that) But this ain't gotta turn to nothin' else, let's keep it all rap.'
He then referenced Kendrick's infamous 'Control' verse from 2013 when he named names and invited his peers to a friendly competition. 'First off, I could never hate the West Coast,' Joey rapped. 'But since n—as comin' for Joe, f—k it then, let's go/ N—as must've forgot what Dot said on 'Control'/ There's still a buncha sensitive rappers in they pajama clothes, I guess/ This ain't no East versus West, I just think that I'm the best, as a matter fact, I know.'
And you know what? He's right.
So far, Ray Vaughn, Daylyt, Reason, and AZ Chike have stepped up for the West Coast with a couple decent tracks here and there, but nothing really to write home about. I was into AZ Chike's decision to step into the ring with his song 'What Would You Do?,' but that effort was squashed when Joey called him 'Ass Cheek' and brought along battle rap vet Loaded Lux to add insult to injury on their reply entitled 'My Town.'
Speaking of Lux, a handful of New York rappers have stepped up to the plate in Pro Era member CJ Fly, Brooklyn rapper Kai Ca$h and Jadakiss' son Really Jaewon. And while I dug Kai's 'Knicks in 6' record, the offerings from the East Coast heir have been mainly forgettable already — but they've managed to show the type of solidarity the West showed during the Kendrick and Drake battle, which I have to commend them for. Somebody else from NYC needs to drop a crazy diss record over a Cash Cobain beat or something, though. Let's get everybody involved.
Anyway, there have been fans clamoring for the Griselda guys to get involved, but they haven't taken the bait yet. Rome Streetz tweeted out a popular meme clip of Stephen A. Smith to express how he feels about people trying to drag him into this thing — and Benny the Butcher seems perfectly fine being a spectator like the rest of us, tweeting out earlier that he felt like Joey was 'handling himself exceptionally well.'
And you know what? He's right.
The Brooklyn rapper hasn't dropped a full-length project since 2022 and has been focusing on a bubbling acting career in recent years. So, when he randomly dropped his Conductor Williams-produced track with a shot at the West Coast's recent dominance, fans were taken aback. He then followed that up with a three-song EP in Pardon Me in February, which included the already released 'Sorry Not Sorry' and the aforementioned 'The Ruler's Back,' and he told Red Bull that he's planning on releasing a lot of new music this year in an interview.
If that's the case, then he's doing a good job with his album rollout — even if the stakes of this battle are pretty low compared to others in rap's history. His songs 'The Finals,' 'My Town' and 'Crash Test Dummy' are the strongest out of the bunch to me as of press time. Filing a TDEast trademark and buying the domain so that his new battle releases can live there was also a nice touch.
Call it East Coast bias, or maybe blame it on the Knicks being in the Eastern Conference Finals — but Joey is winning this thing so far, and I'm not sure it's been close.

'Is It a Crime,' the new duet from Mariah The Scientist and Kali Uchis, tops this week's fan-voted music poll. Mariah and Kali's collab track topped the poll by a landslide, bringing in more than 57% of the vote. 'Is It a Crime,' a slow jam that has the two artists singing about the return of a past love — and defending the relationship if anyone's got anything to say about it — dropped on July 31, with spicy, jail-themed single art. ('very intentional, very grown woman,' Uchis commented of their shoot on Instagram.) The chorus of the song says it all: 'And so what? I fell, you fell in love a couple times/ Tell me, what's it to ya? Tell me, is it a crime/ To fall, to fall in love, in love a couple times?/ Tell me, what's it to ya? Tell me, is it a crime to fall?' BTS Matches Taylor Swift In A Rare Chart Feat

Live albums are not uncommon, especially in today's world where the technology to record performances and concerts is more readily accessible and easier to use than ever. But for most artists, recording and releasing live sets doesn't typically lead to major success on the Billboard charts. Live albums rarely perform as well as studio efforts, and it's relatively uncommon for one to break into the top 10 on the Billboard 200, the chart company's most competitive ranking of EPs and full-lengths in the United States. So far in 2025, only two live albums have managed to reach that region — and that number doubles this week. BTS Returns to the Top 10 BTS returns to the highest tier on the Billboard 200 this week with its first live album, Permission to Dance On Stage (Live). The set marks something of a comeback for the South Korean boy band, as all of its members had to step away from their music careers to fulfill South Korea's mandatory military service, which they have now finished. The project debuts at No. 10 with 43,000 equivalent units shifted in its first seven-day tracking period. Taylor Swift Swift's One-Week Smash Permission to Dance On Stage (Live) is one of only two live albums to crack the top 10 on the Billboard 200 this year. BTS joins Taylor Swift in this uncommon feat, according to Billboard. Just a few months ago, in January, Swift scored a new bestselling live title with Lover: Live From Paris. The vinyl version, which was available only for a short time, instantly became a must-have for Swifties. The set reappeared out of nowhere at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, narrowly missing giving the singer-songwriter another chart leader. Lover: Live From Paris then disappeared one week later, and hasn't returned since. BTS Scores Across Multiple Billboard Rankings Permission to Dance On Stage (Live) opens inside the top 10 on all three Billboard charts it debuts on this week, though it earns the lowest start on the Billboard 200. The project brings BTS back to No. 1 on the World Albums list, where the group has now scored 14 rulers. The septet also nearly conquers the Top Album Sales chart, but instead, Permission to Dance On Stage (Live) starts in the runner-up spot behind Don't Tap the Glass, Tyler, the Creator's surprise new full-length.

Kendrick Lamar Replaces Drake A At No. 1

It's likely that no matter how much time passes since the end of their public feud, Kendrick Lamar and Drake will always be compared to one another and seen as rivals. The rappers spent part of 2024 trading diss tracks in what turned out to be one of the most high-profile beefs in hip-hop history. Lamar came out on top, thanks largely to his tune "Not Like Us," which didn't just reach No. 1 on the Hot 100, it also earned the rapper both Record and Song of the Year at the Grammys. It's been well over a year since "Not Like Us" seemingly finished the war, but Lamar and Drake are still competing against one another directly on the Billboard charts. Kendrick Lamar Replaces Drake at No. 1 Lamar manages to replace Drake at No. 1 on several Billboard tallies in the United States this week, thanks to his recent collaboration with friend and tourmate SZA. "Luther" returns to the summit on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs rankings this frame. Last period, the collaboration sat in the runner-up spot on the two consumption-based lists, pushed down by Drake's "What Did I Miss?" The Canadian hip-hop superstar's single begins to decline this frame, making way for "Luther" — one of the most popular tunes in hip-hop of all time, according to the charts — to find its way to the summit once more. Drake's Songs Decline as "Luther" Surges On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs tally, "What Did I Miss?" drops from No. 1 to No. 3, landing just ahead of Drake's previous smash "Nokia." On the Hot Rap Songs chart, "What Did I Miss?" only steps back one space, while "Nokia" also holds at No. 4 on that ranking. "Luther" Extends Its Historic Reign "Luther" has now ruled both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs rankings for 29 weeks apiece. The tune long ago became the longest-running leader on both tallies, and with every frame it commands the tallies, it adds to its total and Lamar and SZA further their lead over every other hit in the history of those genres.
