'BBC Strictly Come Dancing rejects me from the show every year'

Daily Mirror30-07-2025
Cheryl Baker, who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 with Bucks Fizz, has shared how she always puts herself forward for Strictly Come Dancing, but the show's producers always say no
Bucks Fizz legend Cheryl Baker has disclosed that she applies for Strictly Come Dancing every year, only to be turned down by the TV programme's bosses. Cheryl famously triumphed at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1981 alongside her Bucks Fizz bandmates, Bobby G, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston.

She currently performs with colleague Jay, plus Nikk Mager and Matthew Pateman as The Fizz. Speaking exclusively to Slingo, Cheryl revealed her admiration for the popular BBC dance show, despite repeatedly being snubbed by its producers.

"I'd love to do Strictly. I always put myself up for it every year, and they always say no, which is a great shame. I love dancing - I'm not a trained dancer, but I love dancing," she confessed, reports Wales Online.

Beyond Strictly, Cheryl is eager to pursue additional opportunities in reality television programmes, including I'm a Celebrity or Celebrity Traitors.
"I would love to go do I'm a Celebrity - I would love that. I would also love to do Traitors," she announced. "When I knew there was going to be a celebrity one, I contacted my agent and said, 'Get me on it!' When she told me that they'd already cast it, I was gutted. I can't wait to see it, but I'd do any of them.

"That's the way TV has gone. If you don't want to be on any of those shows, it really limits you to what you can do, because that's what's on TV now.
"I miss Top of the Pops - I wish they'd bring it back. All the young artists now, they've got a televisual platform to show how good they are."
Country pop trio Remember Monday attempted to replicate Bucks Fizz's Eurovision triumph at this year's Song Contest with their number, What the Hell Just Happened?

Following the jury vote that positioned them in tenth place, the British group sadly received zero points from the public ballot, leading to a 19th place result – merely one position below Olly Alexander's standing last year.
Regarding the possibility of returning to Eurovision with The Fizz, Cheryl said: "I mean, we've got our two new guys, they're great singers and if the cameras are far enough away... I'd hate for them to do camera close ups of Jay and I, and go, 'They're getting on a bit!'".
"I feel vocally we're stronger now than we have been for years, because there's four of us and the boys are tremendous but I don't think we could do Eurovision again."
She continued: "We do lots of other festivals and 80s weekends. It's great fun, I love it... It's such a boost to your ego!"

Strictly fans disappointed as star pulls out of main role ahead of series launch

Strictly Come Dancing fans have reacted to the news that long-running professional dancer Gorka Márquez won't have a celebrity partner when the show returns this year Fans of Strictly Come Dancing have shared their disappointment over an announcement ahead of the new series. Some have said that the show "won't be the same" after one of the pros confirmed that they won't be competing. The BBC show is just weeks away from returning, with viewers awaiting the line-up of celebrities ahead of the launch. While no contestants have been confirmed yet, earlier this year, the broadcaster announced which pros will be back on the dance floor when the show returns. It was revealed that they will include Gorka Márquez, 34. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, there will be a host of other returning pros alongside him including Dianne Buswell, Nadiya Bychkova, Karen Hauer, Johannes Radebe, Kai Widdrington, Carlos Gu and Vito Coppola. It comes after reports of all the celebrities rumoured to be joining BBC Strictly Come Dancing 2025. At the time, it was also announced that two new dancers will be making their debut in the series. The newcomers have since been unveiled as So You Think You Can Dance champion Alexis Warr and Julian Caillon, who worked on Dancing with the Stars in Australia. There's thought to be more pros than contestants and it's yet to be revealed which of the dancers will be paired with celebrity partners this year. Long-running pro Gorka, 34, has however confirmed that he won't be one of them this time. Amid the second week of rehearsals, Gorka announced earlier this week that he will return as a judge to the Spanish version of Strictly, Bailando con las estrellas, for a second series. He first appeared on the judging panel last year. On Wednesday, he told his followers on Instagram: "I am Happy to announce that I will be back for season two of BAILANDO CON LAS ESTRELLAS as a judge from September." He added that it means he won't have a partner on Strictly though. Gorka said: "Due to the filming dates this means that I won't be competing with a partner this year in Strictly but I will be a part of lots of the group numbers and will be back for final weeks of the Show to support the rest of my fellow pros and their celebrities in what is going to be an AMAZING SERIES. As always thank you for all the love and support and remember! Keep dancing!" His fiancée Gemma Atkinson responded: "Vamos! Very proud." A number of his Strictly co-stars also showed their support. Some fans expressed their disappointment that he won't be competing though, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. One reacted: "Noooooo! Strictly won't be the same without you! I hope you enjoy every minute of it!" Another commented: "Gutted wanted you to win." A third wrote: "Gutted, always love to see u with a partner but least we will still see u in the group numbers." Someone replied to the announcement: "Congratulations and very well deserved too. It won't be the same without you on Strictly." Whilst another fan said: "Super happy for you @gorka_marquez but I will miss you on Strictly." Sharing their thoughts, another said: "Strictly won't be the same without you @gorka_marquez! We needed you to lift that glitter ball as you nearly did so many times." One fan wrote: "It seems that lots of people feel like I do. Good for you!! And a little sad for us!" Whilst another viewer reacted to the news: "It won't be the same without you but so excited for your judging role again! Congratulations!! And I'm looking forward to the group numbers."

ITV axes Noel Edmonds' big TV comeback after just one series despite huge launch

Noel Edmonds' Kiwi Adventure has reportedly been axed by ITV after just one series, despite the show marking the TV presenter's big comeback to British televisions ITV has reportedly axed Noel Edmonds' Kiwi Adventure after just one series. The show was the presenter's first proper return to TV since he took part in I'm A Me Out of Here! in 2018. ‌ The three-part series, which aired on ITV1 earlier this year, followed Noel, 76, and his wife Elizabeth Davies as they showed off their new life in New Zealand. Viewers watched the couple as they spoke about their interest in crystal healing and living a sustainable lifestyle. ‌ Despite the big comeback, ITV has reportedly decided to shelve Noel's show after just one series. It comes after Noel Edmonds breaks down as he makes emotional confession about his marriage. ‌ A spokesperson for ITV confirmed to the Daily Mail on Thursday: "There are no current plans for more new episodes but audiences can enjoy the show on ITVX." Meanwhile, a TV insider told The Sun that the cancellation is "a blow" to Noel, who thought that he was "on to a winning idea". They added: "There was a great buzz around the series and it was well received by both viewers and critics alike." The Mirror has reached out to ITV for comment. ‌ On the series, Noel opened up about the "dark times" he's faced in the past, explaining that his home features a sculpture called Guardian which is a permanent reminder of his production company unexpectedly going bankrupt. "There's a description of my story here, for guests to understand why I had Guardian created. My Unique group of companies was deliberately collapsed by some corrupt bankers," he said. "And I'm safe in saying that because my bank manager went to prison, along with four others, for 50. What they were doing was pushing businesses over the edge and then taking assets—that's basically what it was about. When the companies went into administration in 2006, I thought I was a crap businessman. I thought it was my fault. 70 people lost their jobs." Noel then revealed: "And I said to Liz, who was a fantastic support, 'When,' not if, When I win my battle to get my losses back, I'm gonna get the great Weta Studios, Lord of the Rings, Avatar, the real creative powerhouses here in New Zealand, I'm gonna ask them to build me a statue." The series also saw Noel propose to wife Liz for the fifth time, asking her: "Deal or no deal?" He said: "We've been married a lot. We got married in a civil ceremony in the Cotswolds, then we went to our home in France and an Anglican minister who I knew very well came over and he was going to bless us and he did the whole thing again. "So this became a bit of a joke with our friends. Oh yeah, we were filming on a cruise ship and the captain married us again. We've done four. But we want a Kiwi one. And there's a compelling reason why we should get married again, in New Zealand. We own a chapel. So why wouldn't we?'

Frankie Bridge says ‘you're dead to me' in cryptic post after ‘secret feud' is revealed

The Loose Women panellist, 36, took to TikTok to share the damning video, showing her sipping on a glass of rosé wine. Frankie then added below: 'Takes me a while, but once you're dead you're dead.' The Sun has contacted a representative for Frankie for comment. Mum-of-two Frankie and presenter Rochelle, 36, shot to fame together at just 12-years-old in pop group S Club Juniors. Frankie and Rochelle then joined girlband The Saturdays in 2007, going on to enjoy a string of huge hits including Issues, Ego and What About Us. The Saturdays - also made up of Vanessa White, Una Healy and Mollie King - have always insisted their decision to go on indefinite hiatus in 2014 wasn't down to them falling out. Speaking to HELLO! previously, Frankie explained: 'We never fell out. We never really officially broke up or anything, so the option [to get back together] has kind of always been there.' But last month The Sun revealed an apparent 'feud' between Frankie and Rochelle, after they gave each other the cold shoulder at Wimbledon. As guests of sponsor Evian, the pair were invited to watch the tennis in a suite in the sought-after hydrangea building nearCourtOne. But while they mingled with other celebrities and guests just yards away from one another - they failed to actually interact with each other. The I'm A Celebrity clip I use to win any row with Marvin, says Rochelle Humes An insider told The Sun: 'It was clear the women were keeping their distance. They sat on opposite sides of the suite and kept to themselves. 'While Frankie posed for pictures with S Club's Rachel Stevens, Rochelle took selfies with her husband Marvin and his I'm A Celebrity campmate Sam Thompson. 'It was a shame because having the two girls from The Saturdays together for a mini-reunion was exciting for everyone there. 'Even though they were pleasant to each other when they did brush shoulders, they didn't spend any extra time together than they had to, in between being amicable while passing each other en route to watch the tennis.' While Frankie has taken the 'never say never' approach to a potential Saturdays return and Una, 43, has admitted several times she's ready to perform with the girls again, Rochelle previously insisted she 'highly doubts' it will happen.
