Pahalgam, ceasefire to Bihar SIR: INDIA bloc lines up issues to target Govt, projects unity
These issues will be 'raised in one voice' by the Opposition parties in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the bloc said, hoping that when the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor and related issues are discussed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Parliament to answer various questions.
The Opposition alliance also said it would soon hold a physical meeting of its leaders.
The virtual meeting was attended by Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, K C Venugopal and Jairam Ramesh of the Congress; Samajwadi Party's Ram Gopal Yadav; TMC's Abhishek Banerjee; Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Uddhav Thackeray and Sanjay Raut; NCP(SP)'s Sharad Pawar and Jayant Patil; National Conference's Omar Abdullah; JMM's Hemant Soren; RJD's Tejashwi Yadav; and DMK's Tiruchi N Siva. The CPI, CPI(M) and
CPI(ML) Liberation were represented by D Raja, M A Baby, and Dipankar Bhattacharya respectively.
Kerala Congress (M) MP Jose K Mani, RSP's N K Premachandran, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi's Thirumavalavan and IUML's K M Kader Mohideen also attended the meeting.
Addressing the media after the meeting, the Congress's deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, Pramod Tiwari, said, 'Injustices and failures of this government have affected 140 crore Indians. At the meeting, we strategised to raise these issues during the Monsoon Session. I am happy to say that almost all 24 parties, their leaders took part in the meeting. We have received several suggestions. There are eight issues which were discussed prominently. This doesn't mean that these are our only issues; other issues would also be raised.'
He said 'all parties are on the same page' that the Pahalgam attack is one issue the bloc would focus on since it 'directly affects the self-respect of 140 crore Indians'. 'It is an issue which saw maximum worry. That despite so much time having passed, those who left our sisters widowed, the terrorists have disappeared. Now, there has been a confession that it was an intelligence failure, and that the government couldn't give security there.'
Tiwari said when 'Operation Sindoor is discussed, the ceasefire also has to be discussed and then Mr Trump's claims regarding it 24 times – that he brokered the ceasefire between India and Pakistan by using trade. And our PM has still remained silent'.
The Congress leader said another issue of major concern that the Opposition will raise strongly during the session is the Bihar SIR. 'Under SIR, democracy is being murdered with 'votebandi' done after 'notebandi'… Names are being struck off from the rolls and added based on BJP's preferences by the EC,' he alleged. 'There is a threat to voting rights under this undeclared emergency.'
Another issue flagged by the alliance was the government's 'foreign policy failures', with Tiwari saying that 'The government's foreign policy towards Pakistan and China are worrying'. He added that 'the atrocities in Gaza would also be raised'.
'Some members also raised the issue of delimitation, which we will include in our agenda during the session. The issue of atrocities on SCs, STs, women, minorities is also an important one,' he said, adding that the Ahmedabad plane crash would also be taken up by the Opposition members.
Tiwari side-stepped the question about the AAP skipping the meeting, with AAP leader Sanjay Singh having already said Friday that his party was no longer part of the INDIA bloc.
'We want Parliament to run and the government to answer our questions, reflecting democracy,' said Tiwari.
Sources said during the meeting D Raja obliquely objected to Rahul Gandhi's remarks that he made during a meeting in Kerala's Kottayam Friday that he was 'fighting both the RSS and the CPI(M) ideologically'. Raja was said to have commented that the bloc's leaders should 'have a limit' while criticising each other.
Another source said that Pawar, Uddhav and Ram Gopal Yadav suggested that the bloc's meetings be held periodically and not after such long gaps.
Saturday's meeting was the bloc's first meeting outside Parliament in over a year. Its last formal meeting was held on June 5 last year – a day after the Lok Sabha election results were announced. At that meeting, 21 parties were in attendance, including the AAP.
The Monsoon session, starting on July 21, will conclude on August 21.
This is going to be the first session since April 22 Pahalgam attack, in which 25 tourists and a local ponywallah were killed. Subsequently, Operation Sindoor was conducted by the Indian armed forces in Pakistan against terror emanating from that country. Top Opposition leaders, including Kharge and Rahul, have then demanded a special session of Parliament to discuss these developments.
A source said Omar Abdullah appealed to the alliance's leaders to raise the issue of restoration of Jammu and Kashmir statehood in both the Houses. 'The meeting decided that along with Pahalgam security lapses, J&K statehood could also be raised,' the source added.

Trump reiterates threat of levying 10% tariff on BRICS members
US President Donald Trump yesterday reiterated his threat of levying a 10-per cent tariff on imports from BRICS group members, saying the group of developing nations would end very quickly if they ever formed in a meaningful way. Trump announced the new tariff on July 6, saying it would apply to any countries aligning themselves with what he termed the 'anti-American policies' of the BRICS group. However, BRICS leaders have rejected that allegation. President Donald Trump yesterday reiterated his threat of levying a 10-per cent tariff on imports from BRICS members. "When I heard about this group from BRICS, six countries, basically, I hit them very, very hard. And if they ever really form in a meaningful way, it will end very quickly," Trump said. He said he is committed to preserving the US dollar's global status as a reserve currency. "When I heard about this group from BRICS, six countries, basically, I hit them very, very hard. And if they ever really form in a meaningful way, it will end very quickly," Trump said without naming the countries. "We can never let anyone play games with us," he was quoted as saying by global newswires. He is committed to preserving the US dollar's global status as a reserve currency and pledged to never allow the creation of a central bank digital currency in America, Trump said. Despite Brazil nixing BRICS plans to push for a common currency in February this year, the group is mulling over a cross-border payment system called BRICS Pay that would facilitate trade and financial transactions in local currencies. The BRICS group expanded last year beyond its core members, i.e., Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, to include other countries like Iran and Indonesia. Leaders at the group's summit in Brazil indirectly criticised US military and trade policies. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (DS)

AAP collapsing, brick by brick… sooner than expected, says Punjab Congress' Warring
With Kharar MLA Anmol Gagan Mann saying that she has resigned from the Vidhan Sabha, the Opposition Congress said that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has started 'collapsing', while BJP termed the ruling AAP leader's move 'a betrayal and treachery against the five-year mandate given by the people'. Leading the attack the ruling party was Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring who said Maan was the second AAP legislator to be 'out of the party' in less than a month. The AAP on June 29 suspended Amritsar North MLA and former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh for five years for allegedly indulging in anti-party activities. 'The rate at which the MLAs have started to quit or are made to quit suggests that the party's countdown has begun sooner than we expected. The AAP is collapsing, and it is happening brick by brick,' said Warring. The Congress leader pointed out that only three days ago, Maan had met the party convener, Arvind Kejriwal and had said, 'his dream of uplifting society always fills us with courage and inspiration'. What happened to that 'courage and inspiration' within three days, Warring asked. Warring said if the AAP's own MLAs are feeling so much 'alienated' and 'disillusioned' that they are quitting the party, what would be the plight of the common man who does not have any privileges like those of the legislators? Observing that all is not well in the AAP, he pointed out, 'One MLA was suspended from the party and within less than a month another MLA has resigned, even saying to have quit politics'. 'While it, indeed, is the AAP's internal matter, but when a fire breaks out inside the house, the flames do get noticed far and wide and cannot be overlooked,' the Congress leader said. BJP leader Vineet Joshi said Maan's resignation as Kharar MLA is a 'betrayal and treachery' with the five-year mandate given by the people. Before her, MLA Kanwar Sandhu remained absent from the assembly constituency for four years, and now Anmol's resignation within three years of getting elected clearly shows that the AAP is repeatedly 'betraying' Kharar by fielding 'wrong' candidates, the BJP leader said. Joshi further said that Maan's tenure of three years and four months for the Kharar Assembly constituency was nothing short of a bad dream. 'The people of Kharar city, Kurali, New Chandigarh, Nayagaon Municipal Committee, and most villages were deprived of even seeing the face of their MLA, who was also a minister for some time,' he said in a statement. On the rare days she did venture out, JCB machines accompanied her, and people's shops and homes were demolished, he alleged. 'When the Punjab government tried to illegally and forcibly seize farmers' land in Jhajjheri, Maan was missing,' Joshi alleged. Similarly, when thousands of homes faced demolition in the Nayagaon municipality due to the expansion of the Eco-Sensitive Zone from 100 meters to three kilometers, Anmol remained silent initially, he added. Taking a dig, Joshi said, 'If you wanted to quit politics, why did you join in the first place?'

TMC leader Abhishek slams Centre over Pahalgam attack; criticises 'foreign policy'
TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee slammed the Centre for "intelligence failure" in the Pahalgam terror attack and voiced concern over "steep decline" in India's foreign policy. According to sources close to the TMC national general secretary, Mr. Banerjee raised the matter during the INDIA bloc's online meeting, which was convened to firm up the joint Opposition strategy for the Monsoon session of Parliament beginning Monday. "During the INDIA bloc meeting, Banerjee raised the Pahalgam issue. He said it was clearly intelligence failure. Even the governor has admitted the same. Then why was the IB chief given an extension? What was the compulsion?" a source close to the Diamond Harbour MP told PTI after the meeting on Saturday (July 19, 20250. He also alleged that Pegasus spyware, instead of being used to combat terrorism, was being used to intimidate opposition leaders. "Pegasus is being used by the government to harass the opposition instead of using it to stop terrorism and nab terrorists," the source added. Mr. Banerjee voiced concern over what he termed a "steep decline" in India's foreign policy over the past decade, pointing out the absence of explicit condemnation from ASEAN nations against Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack. "In the meeting, Banerjee said the last 10-12 years of India's foreign policy have witnessed a big decline. It is in bad shape. Why did no ASEAN country name Pakistan while condemning the dastardly Pahalgam attack?" the TMC leader is learnt to have said during the virtual meet. He also criticised the Modi government's communication strategy after the terror strike, saying Indians were forced to rely on U.S. President Donald Trump's social media accounts for updates. "Such is the sad state of affairs that people of India had to look to Donald Trump's social media handles and accounts to get updates because they were kept in the dark by this government at the Centre," the source quoted Mr. Banerjee as saying. He questioned the government's decision to send parliamentary delegations abroad to brief stakeholders while allegedly withholding information from citizens at home. "After Pahalgam, MPs delegations were sent to various countries. What good did it do? How many countries came out in our support? Instead of briefing its own people, the Modi government sent MPs to brief stakeholders abroad. The government kept the people of India in the dark," Mr. Banerjee said, according to the source. During the meeting, he also raised the issue of Special Intensive Revision, which he said the BJP and EC were using as a form of "backdoor NRC". "Four months after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP added 40 lakh voters in Maharashtra to win the assembly polls. They are trying a similar thing in Bihar. In Bengal, they are trying to remove genuine voters," a source close to Mr. Banerjee said. Twenty-four parties, including the Congress, TMC, DMK, RJD, SP, NCP (Sharad Pawar), Shiv Sena (UBT), JMM, CPI-M, CPI, CPI-ML, Forward Bloc, IUML and Kerala Congress, participated in the deliberations.
