Texas tops college football valuation rankings
Why it matters: NCAA teams aren't for sale yet, but name, image and likeness (NIL) has led more to mirror themselves like professional clubs.
State of play: The Athletic ranked teams in the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 by how much money they'd hypothetically sell for on the open market.
Prestige, championships, facility renovations, population trends and realignment scenarios were all factored into the rankings.
Context: The New York Times-owned sports publication took real-life sales examples across pro sports to determine what each program is worth.
It used NFL and NBA sales to calculate ratios in the SEC and Big Ten, and the MLB and NHL were the benchmarks for ACC and Big 12 programs.
What they're saying: "The Longhorns routinely lead the country in revenue and were the only team to top $200 million in the most recent financial reports," The Athletic's Matt Baker wrote.
"The Longhorns haven't won a national title since 2005 but made the College Football Playoff semifinals each of the past two seasons and are among this preseason's top championship contenders."

Oklahoma Sooners are a better team than ESPN is giving them credit for
The Oklahoma Sooners enter the 2025 season outside of the top 25 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. It's an unfamiliar situation for one of the most successful teams in the history of the sport. But that's what happens when everything that could go wrong does for the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners are looking to rewrite the narratives and prove they're a better team than they were a year ago. While a number of national analysts think highly of the Sooners, there are some who are taking a wait-and-see approach. Over at ESPN, the Sooners were dubbed as long shots for the College Football Playoff in their SEC preview. In what figures to be a big season for Oklahoma coach Brent Venables, the Sooners added former Washington State quarterback John Mateer and running back Jaydn Ott from Cal. The defense should be solid, and if new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle can turn things around, the Sooners might be a sleeper. The Sooners play Texas in Dallas and South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama on the road. - Mark Schlabach, ESPN The Sooners enter the season with a lot to prove to the nation after what happened last season. But this is a team that's made a lot of changes to the personnel for an offense that was one of the worst in the SEC last season. The hope is that Ben Arbuckle and John Mateer can at least return the offense to respectability. With Brent Venables calling the defense, one that figures to be really good again in 2025, the Sooners' offense doesn't have to score 40 or 50 points per game to be successful. And that should be encouraging for Oklahoma. Even though the metrics say the schedule is difficult this year, the reality is that the Sooners are significantly improved on paper and should be better prepared to play every team on their slate. Oklahoma may be considered a long shot due to what happened in 2024 or the schedule, but they're actually closer to a playoff team than many are willing to admit. 23 Days Until 2025 Purdue Football: Jaheim Merriweather & Trey Smith
We are just over 3 weeks away from the kickoff of the 2025 Purdue football season. Today we've got two players on the countdown. So let's get started! #23 – Jaheim Merriweather Running Back 6'2', 215 lbs Sophomore Jackson, Tennessee 2025 Outlook: Running back rotation Merriweather is one of the few returning players from last year's team. He appeared in 11 games as a freshman. He only carried the ball 15 times for 77 yards, but just to see the field at the running back position as a freshman is a great accomplishment. The hope with this position is obviously that Devin Mockobee will hold down the starting role and hopefully reach 1,000 yards this season. However, even the best of running backs needs breaks. Merriweather could be one of the players to step up into a backup rotation role at the RB position. Opportunities will be available at nearly all positions this season and RB is no different. #23 – Trey Smith Defensive End 6'4', 255 lbs Sophomore (redshirt) Apopka, Florida Previous School: Illinois 2025 Outlook: Defensive end depth Smith comes to Purdue after playing at Illinois last season. He'd been at Illinois for two seasons appearing in 11 games over those two seasons. No huge stats to speak of during that time with only two tackles including one tackle for loss on the season. Now he will look to make an impact on a different Big Ten team just down the road. Smith certainly has some good measurables, now it's a matter of putting it together on the field with a new playbook.
