Crusaders hail O'Connor as Wallabies trump card in Lions series

Hindustan Times17-05-2025

The Canterbury Crusaders say veteran fly-half James O'Connor still boasts international quality and would be a potential Australian match-winner if named to face the British and Irish Lions.
O'Connor, 34, has been a revelation for the Crusaders in their climb to second place on the Super Rugby standings, impressing again off the reserves bench in a 48-33 win over the New South Wales Waratahs in Sydney on Friday.
Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt said last week he is considering the merits of the versatile back, who played the last of 64 Tests nearly three years ago.
Crusaders captain David Havili believed O'Connor could be a trump card in the three-Test series against the Lions starting in July.
"He's been there, done it before, and certainly if I was picking a team, he'd be there," Havili said Friday of O'Connor, who has been used primarily off the bench by the 14-time Super Rugby champions.
"I think him being able to come on and finish games is exactly what you need in big Test matches.
"He's been around the world, played in massive games, big stadiums, and he knows what it's about."
O'Connor started all three Tests at fly-half when Australia last hosted the Lions, in 2013 when the tourists prevailed 2-1.
Havili said the Australian's experience and engaging approach had been invaluable to the development of the Crusaders' youthful fly-halves - Taha Kemara and Rivez Reihana.
"He's just a great person to have on your team, regardless of the rugby and the fact that he's got a great mind on him."
O'Connor's precision on attack in Sydney helped an under-strength Crusaders notch a ninth win from 12 games to guarantee they will qualify for the top-six finals in June.
Without All Blacks forwards Scott Barrett, Codie Taylor and Fletcher Newell, the visitors still had too much for the Waratahs pack, while former Wales international Johnny McNicholl performed ably at fullback for the injured Will Jordan.
All Black Sevu Reece was among the seven Crusaders' try-scorers.
It lifted the winger to 65 Super Rugby tries, level with former Wellington Hurricanes scrum-half TJ Perenara for the most by any player in the competition's history.

Steve Smith Creates History At Lord's, Breaks Record Of Most Runs In...

Last Updated: In six Test matches played so far at Lord's for Australia, Steve Smith has 576 runs to his name, which is the most by a non-English batter. Steve Smith is playing for Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final against South Africa. During the second session of the first day's play currently underway at Lord's, the 36-year-old batter from Sydney entered his name in the history books by breaking the record of scoring the most runs by a non-English batter in Test matches played at the Home of Cricket. Smith needed 51 runs on Wednesday (June 11) to break former Australian batter Warren Bardsley's record of 575 runs, and he achieved the objective by taking a single on the second ball of the 33rd over of Australia's first innings bowled by Kagiso Rabada. Warren Bardsley, who featured in 41 Tests for Australia from 1909 to 1926, played five Test matches at the Home of Cricket and in seven innings amassed a total of 575 runs. Most runs by overseas batters in Tests played at Lord's The overall record of scoring the most Test runs at Lord's is in the name of legendary English batter Joe Root. Root has played 22 Tests so far at Lord's and, with the help of seven centuries and seven half-centuries, has amassed a total of 2022 runs. He is followed by countryman Graham Gooch (2015 runs in 21 Tests) and Alastair Cook (1937 runs in 26 Tests). Most Test runs at Lord's Smith, who is playing his sixth Test for Australia at Lord's these days, came out to bat at No. 4 in the WTC 2025 final and has so far hammered seven fours. Thanks to his good show with the bat so far, Aussies have managed to cross the 100-run mark in the first innings despite losing four batters—Usman Khawaja (0), Cameron Green (4), Marnus Labuschagne (17), and Travis Head (11)—in the morning session. For South Africa, fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen have picked up two wickets each so far for the Temba Bavuma-led side after he opted to field first.

WTC Final: Steve Smith becomes visiting batter with most runs in Tests at Lord's in match vs South Africa

Steve Smith notched up another record in a career filled with them when he raced to the top of the list of visiting batters to score the most runs in Tests at Lord's on Wednesday when he reached 51 runs in Day 1 of the World Test Championship final against South Africa on Wednesday. Smith got to the milestone when he steadied a faltering Australian innings with a half century which he brought up in 76 deliveries in an innings studded with 9 fours. Smith surpassed Australia's Warren Bardsley who had 575 at an average of 115 at Lord's. Bardsley had scored 164 at No. 4 for Aus during the last Lord's Test against South Africa in 1912. Earlier, South Africa seamers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen made early inroads into Australia's batting order as sharp catching had the defending champions reeling on 67-4 at lunch. Rabada, returning from a one-month ban after a drugs test earlier this year caught him using cocaine, took two wickets in four balls after cloudy conditions overhead prompted South Africa captain Temba Bavuma to put Australia in to bat. Marco Jansen snagged the other wickets to vindicate a risky decision by Bavuma on a ground where the team winning the toss usually elects to bat first. The 30-year-old Rabada made his breakthrough in the seventh over thanks to sharp catches in the slips, with Usman Khawaja first to go off after lasting 20 balls without scoring before edging to David Bedingham who caught a rising ball. Cameron Green, returning to the test side after back surgery, was the next out. He immediately got off the mark with a boundary but was out after three balls as he edged Rabada to second slip, where Aiden Markram took a low catch despite Wiaan Mulder driving across him. Rabada conceded only nine runs off his six overs in a menacing spell befitting a bowler second in the test rankings. Marnus Labuschagne had been moved up the Australia batting order to accommodate Green at No. 3 and made 17 runs off 56 balls before edging Jansen's full delivery outside the wicket behind to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne. A spectacular diving catch from Verreynne then saw Travis Head dismissed for 11 in the last over before lunch, leaving Steve Smith unbeaten on 26 after the first session, where the floodlights were on throughout as the cloud failed to clear. Head played some aggressive shots in his brief stint while Smith survived a review when he missed a full ball from Jansen some 10 minutes before lunch. (With agency inputs)
