Jonathan Mayers, Concert Promoter and Bonnaroo Co-Founder, Dies at 51
The news arrives as the three-day Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is set to kick off Thursday with headliner Luke Combs.

The New York City native founded Superfly Presents as a marketing and event company in 1996 with partners Kerry Black, Rick Farman and Richard Goodstone, co-creating events such as the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival with Another Planet Entertainment and Bonnaroo, held since 2002 on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee.
Mayers' first job was working with New Orleans' legendary Tipitina's and the city's Jazz Fest. Superfly then went on to stage its first concert with the Meters, Maceo Parker and Rebirth Brass Band during Mardi Gras.
Mayers partnered with AC Entertainment's Ashley Caps, Paradigm agent Chip Hooper and Red Light manager Coran Capshaw to launch Bonnaroo. Featuring headliners like Phish's Trey Anastasio and members of the Grateful Dead and annually drawing crowds of more than 70,000, it has become the model for the modern music festival.
Superfly launched Vegoose festival in Las Vegas in 2005, then partnered with Another Planet to launch Outside Lands in San Francisco's fabled Golden Gate Park. In 2017, Mayers partnered with Viacom and Comedy Central to produce a comedy festival dubbed Clusterfest, which included the likes of Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer, Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah.
Mayers' innovative promotion approach included re-creating sets from iconic TV shows like Seinfeld, The Office and The Daily Show offering immersive fan experiences, including a Friends pop-up of one of its sets in New York, Boston and Atlanta.
Mayers left Superfly in August 2021 and sued his ex-partners in early 2022, accusing them of breach of contract and fraud for underestimating the value of his ownership in the company. The lawsuit was dismissed in January 2023.
Since leaving Superfly, Mayers worked on Core City Detroit, a project which sought funds to invest in the inner city, creating a music campus with entertainment experiences for the public.
His longtime friend, Dayglo Presents and Brooklyn Bowl founder Peter Shapiro, told The Hollywood Reporter: 'People use the word visionary a lot in our business, but Jonathan Mayers was the real deal when it came to imagining what something new could be. It takes courage to lean into doing something that could crash and fail. And that is how Jonathan Mayers broke down real barriers and created some next level music festivals that impacted a generation of fans, bands and promoters.'
Another Planet Entertainment issued a statement describing Mayers as 'a bright light, always pushing new and creative ideas in the entertainment space. Everyone in the Another Planet family will miss him dearly.'

Zach Bryan and Kings of Leon will headline the next installment of the Golden Gate Park Concerts series on Friday, Aug. 15, in what promises to be one of San Francisco's biggest live music events of the year. Organized by Another Planet Entertainment — the same team behind Outside Lands — this single-day show follows the wildly successful inaugural concert last year, which brought System of a Down and Deftones to a sold-out crowd of more than 50,000 fans. Who's playing at the Golden Gate Park Concert 2025? Zach Bryan, the Grammy-winning country artist who's just wrapped up his sold-out 'Quittin' Time' tour, is headlining. Doja Cat defends rap skills after Outside Lands debut: ‘I'm incredible'
Doja Cat clapped back against online criticism about her Outside Lands performance over the weekend, defending her rap skills and declaring that she is 'incredible.' The Grammy-winning artist, who headlined the San Francisco music festival on Friday, Aug. 8, engaged in a back-and-forth with X user @playeration after they called out her musical style on the platform. "Hopefully after Doja drops pop disco album of the century her fans can stop trying to force her into female rap conversations," the X user initially posted on Saturday, Aug. 9, referring to Doja Cat's forthcoming fifth studio album, "Vie." The genre-bending singer and rapper teased the project, performing her new single 'Jealous Type' during her Outside Lands headlining set Friday. She also hosted a surprise listening party at the soon-to-close queer nightclub Oasis immediately after her Golden Gate Park set. She had previously told V Magazine that 'Vie' is 'pop-driven.' The @playeration continued by adding that Doja Cat 'can't be taken seriously as a rapper without ever prioritizing bars, punchlines, wordplay, and storytelling.' That's when the artist chimed in. "You don't listen to or read enough of my writing to be able to make this claim. I'm alright at what I do and sometimes I'm incredible," she responded on Sunday, Aug. 10. "Please stop trying to downplay my ability it feels like you're doling out criticism with no constructiveness based on something that's deeper than just the topic of music." When the @playeration replied to Doja Cat, noting that the criticism is 'not personal,' the two engaged in a brief conversation in the thread. The X user explained that they have listened to the 'Paint the Town Red' artist's full catalogue, but doesn't rate her as highly as rappers like Rakim, Jay-Z and Jeezy. 'That's not hate, it's just a difference in what I look for in rap,' @playeration wrote. Doja Cat replied that she respects their perspective. 'If you haven't been able to find a bar that you can connect with, that's more than okay,' she wrote. 'That's your right.' The conversation came two days after Doja Cat's Outside Lands debut, during which she showed off her new '80s-esque aesthetic and new track. Though she didn't draw as large of a crowd as fellow Grammy-winning rapper Doechii, who performed on the Lands End stage just a few hours before her, Doja Cat got thousands of her fans moving with hits such as 'Woman,' 'Agora Hils' and 'Boss Bitch.'
