ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Three environmental activists lost their lives and several others were injured while attempting to extinguish a wildfire that broke out in a popular natural park in western Iran's (Rojhelat) Kurdistan province, a human rights watchdog said on Monday.
A blaze at Kurdistan's Abidar Natural Park, among the most well-known areas in the province, broke out on Thursday and quickly spread to residential complexes nearby. The fire was eventually brought under control by local residents and environmental activists, who criticized the government for insufficient support.
The Oslo-based Hengaw Human Rights Organization said that environmental activists Khabat Amini, Chaiko Yousefinejad, and Hamid Moradi died due to 'severe burns' sustained from the fire.
Five other environmental activists were injured, according to Hengaw.
Footage dated Monday showed a large crowd gathering before a local hospital in Kurdistan's provincial capital of Sanandaj to honor their dedication, Hengaw added, and their funerals drew a large crowd.
A two-day mourning period was declared in Sanandaj by Governor Arash Lihony after their deaths.
The Abidar Natural Park in Kurdistan province is renowned for its scenic beauty and its open-air cinema, considered one of the largest of its kind in the Middle East, making it a popular tourist destination and outdoor recreation area for residents.
Forest fires in Rojhelat, particularly in the vicinity of Kurdistan province, have become increasingly regular over the past few years, sparking concerns from environmentalists amid claims of arson. Many hold the Iranian government responsible for the blazes.
Iranian security forces also routinely arrest environmentalists seeking to control the flames.

The proposed PMF Authority Law, currently under parliamentary debate in Baghdad, seeks to formalize the role of the PMF within Iraq's official military structure. It is backed by major Shiite factions and presented as part of Iraq's ongoing security reform process. Supporters say it is necessary to regulate the force's budget, define command responsibilities, and integrate it into the military chain of command. However, critics—both within Iraq and abroad—argue the draft would entrench the power of Iran-aligned armed factions. These groups, while operating under the PMF umbrella, have faced repeated accusations of acting independently of the Iraqi state and maintaining loyalty to Tehran. The State Department declined to comment on specific consequences should the law be passed, but warned that Washington will continue to take 'appropriate action' against financial institutions that deal with US-designated terrorist organizations. SDF arrests ISIS research head in Syria
Shafaq News – Hasakah On Wednesday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF,) with direct support from the US-led Global Coalition, arrested the head of the Public Research Department of ISIS during a raid in Syria's northeastern Hasakah province, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Two other ISIS members were detained on July 28 in a security operation inside the notorious al-Hol camp by the SDF's Tactical Operations Unit (TOL), also with coalition backing. Those individuals were accused of conducting internal security operations for ISIS within the camp, participating in past attacks in both Syria and Iraq, and working to maintain the group's influence over residents in the facility.

'We are committed to receiving crude oil at a rate of no less than 230,000 barrels per day as an initial phase,' Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul Ghani told reporters during a press conference in Kirkuk. Under a recent agreement between Erbil and Baghdad, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has committed to exporting all of its oil - estimated at 230,000 barrels per day - through Iraq's State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO). In return, Baghdad pledged to release long-delayed public sector salaries in the Region. But repeated drone strikes - around 20 in July alone - have severely damaged oil production in the Region, with some fields forced to halt operations. A report by Iraq's oil ministry on Tuesday said Kurdish oil production had dropped by 100,000 barrels per day. 'This volume may be increased to align with the amount stipulated in the federal budget law, which requires Baghdad to receive no less than 400,000 barrels per day,' Abdul Ghani said, adding that 'we will start with this amount [230,000 bpd] and will gradually increase to reach the 400,000 bpd target.' The drop has also delayed oil transfers to Baghdad, which in turn has stalled salary payments, citing insufficient deliveries. Regarding Turkey seeking to renew its oil export agreement with Baghdad, Abdul Ghani told Rudaw that 'the agreement will remain in effect until July 2026. During this period, another agreement will be reached in order to ensure the continuation of operations.' Last week, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said Turkey has notified Iraq it is willing to extend the decades-long oil agreement with Baghdad, but with modifications to ensure full use of the Iraq-Turkey pipeline. At the time, the Iraqi oil ministry said Ankara had officially expressed its willingness to renew and expand the 1973 oil export agreement with Baghdad. Turkey confirmed sending a letter to Baghdad that included a draft of a broader energy cooperation deal covering oil, gas, petrochemicals, and electricity. It came after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in mid-July announced that Turkey will not renew the 1973 Iraq-Turkey oil export agreement, which is set to be terminated in 2026. Oil exports through the Iraq-Turkey pipeline have been suspended since March 2023, following a ruling by a Paris-based arbitration court that found Turkey in violation of the 1973 pipeline agreement by allowing the KRG to independently export oil since 2014. The KRG, federal Iraqi authorities, and international oil companies continue to negotiate a long-term framework to restore full export capacity from the Kurdistan Region.
