Southern Miss defeats Columbia 8-1, advances to championship round of Hattiesburg Regional

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Grayden Harris and Landen Payne allowed one run, Southern Mississippi scored the go-ahead run on an infield throwing error and the Golden Eagles defeated Columbia 8-1 on Sunday to reach the championship round of the Hattiesburg Regional.
The score was tied at 1-all through five innings before the Golden Eagles scored in each of the final four innings.

Drey Barrett scored the go-ahead run on an infield throwing error in the sixth inning. Jake Cook hit a grounder to first baseman Tate Vogler who missed the tag on Cook and his throw sailed past the catcher when trying to get Barrett out at the plate.
Southern Miss (46-15) added a run in the seventh, three in the eighth and two in the ninth. Ben Higdon blasted a three-run home run in the eighth.
Regional host Southern Mississippi advanced to the championship round against undefeated Miami. The Golden Eagles need a win later Sunday and again on Monday to advance to the super regionals. Miami needs one victory to win the regional and advance.
Harris (5-3) allowed four hits and one run in 6 1/3 innings. He left with a runner on first in the seventh inning, giving way to Payne who induced an inning-ending 3-6-3 double play. Payne allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings for his fifth save.
Joe Sheets (3-4) allowed two runs, one earned in 5 1/3 innings for Columbia (30-19). ___

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Mike Vellucci as an assistant coach for Jeff Blashill's first staff with his new team. The Blackhawks announced the addition of Vellucci on Monday. He joins Michael Peca and Anders Sorensen as Blashill's assistants. Goaltending coach Jimmy Waite, video coach Matt Meacham and assistant video coach Adam Gill round out the staff. Advertisement Vellucci, 58, spent the previous five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was an assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes from 2014-19. Vellucci also was an assistant coach for the U.S. when it won the world championship last month. Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar and defenseman Alex Vlasic were part of the winning American team. 'Serving as an assistant coach at the world championship this summer and winning a gold medal for our country alongside Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic will bring such valuable experience to this group," Blashill said in a release. "That kind of championship-caliber background only makes our team better and I'm excited to get to work.' Blashill, 51, took over as Chicago's head coach last month. CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — AJ Singer's 10th-inning single lifted Oregon State to a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Florida State on Friday in the opening game of the Corvallis Super Regional. The Beavers (46-13-1) were down to their last strike in the ninth inning before Jacob Krieg's two-run single tied it up at 4-4, capping a three-run rally. Earlier, Wilson Weber doubled leading off the ninth and later scored on a wild pitch. Advertisement In the bottom of the 10th, Aiva Arquette led off with a double and took third on a single by Gavin Turley. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, still with nobody out, Arquette was forced out at home by the catcher for the first out. Singer then drove the first pitch into center field and Turley scored the winning run. Myles Bailey's go-ahead solo home run in the sixth cleared the bleachers and left the ballpark, giving the Seminoles a 2-1 lead. Florida State (41-15) added a run on a single by Max Williams in the seventh and another on Brody DeLamielleure's two-out single in the eighth for a 4-1 lead. Oregon State starter Dax Whitney struck out 10 in 4 2/3 innings but left after throwing 97 pitches and allowing one run. He has 22 strikeouts over two NCAA Tournament starts.
