Ohio State football coach Ryan Day discusses his purpose for coaching

USA Today2 days ago
Coaching is more than X's and O's, especially in big-time college football. You don't have to tell Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day that, he's been in the job now entering his seventh year, and has seen a lot of changes, been criticized mightily, and come out the other side as a College Football Playoff national champion.
Along the way, he's put in place programs on and off the field to help his players, especially as an advocate for mental illness and embracing social justice causes. It's a lot, and there are a lot of sacrifices that come along with the job that can grind on anyone.
So, with all of that in mind, why would anyone get into coaching, aside from the multi-million dollar paycheck that can happen to the elite? According to Day, while appearing on the Bobby Carpenter show, it's not about him, but the kids in the program.
"Where do you find your purpose? And to me, and our staff, it has to be pouring into young people," Day said ... "We're helping young people reach their dreams and goals. We're standing on the stage (after winning the national championship), it had nothing to do with me, it had to do with everybody else, because it took everybody ... it took former players, it took everybody that was flying across the country. It took everybody at home that were sending good vibes through the TV -- it was everybody that helped in recruiting -- everybody involved because it comes down to helping these young people reach their dreams and goals, and that's why you get into coaching."
It's hard to argue with that, and one of the things I respect the most about Day is how he took the high road on all the criticism and vitriol he received from fans and the media over the last few years. Now that he's brought home the ultimate prize -- something many said he'd never do -- maybe those things he does off the field will get even more attention.
It's instances like these where Buckeye Nation should be thankful for who it has running the program right now.

MSU target, PG Carlos Medlock Jr. is becoming one of fastest risers on recruiting trail

A prospect Michigan State basketball identified early in the recruiting process is becoming one of the fastest risers this summer. Carlos Medlock Jr. of Branson, Mo. picked up an offer from the Spartans in mid-June and has quickly risen up the recruiting boards with strong summer play on the circuits. Medlock -- who is originally from Michigan but recently transferred to Link Academy in Missouri -- shot up the recruiting rankings recently, now sitting as a four-star prospect. When Michigan State offered him last month, Medlock was a three-star prospect. Medlock now ranks as the No. 9 point guard and No. 104 player in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2026 class. For some perspective, on June 16 when he picked up his Spartans offer, he ranked as the No. 26 point guard in the class. Michigan State was Medlock's first power conference offer, with Michigan and Oklahoma State following the Spartans' suit since then, per 247Sports. It should come as no surprise that Tom Izzo and his staff was able to identify a top talent before others did, and hopefully that will give Michigan State an edge in this now heated battle for a premier talent in the 2026 class. College football writer thinks new Oklahoma Sooners GM will be a home run

The Oklahoma Sooners made a very big hire this offseason when they brought in Jim Nagy as their new general manager. Nagy previously ran the Senior Bowl, but he's got plenty of experience in NFL circles and was a huge get for OU. Oklahoma needed a new general manager and a new direction when it came to player evaluation and player acquisition. Nagy offers both, as the Sooners have altered the way they view high school recruiting, NIL and the transfer portal in the months that Nagy has been on staff. The new GM has also shifted Oklahoma's front office model, making plenty of new hires this offseason. It was a bold move for the Sooners, but one that the program and its fan base are hoping will work out. After six straight conference titles and four College Football Playoff trips from 2015 to 2020, OU has fallen behind in the four years since, as the portal and name, image, and likeness have changed the game more than Oklahoma thought they would. The Sooners haven't played for a conference championship in the last four years, went through a coaching change, and haven't gotten all that close to the CFP. Nagy has been hired to fix all of that on the player acquisition side of things where Oklahoma has slipped behind the pack. He's also going to be managing the new revenue-sharing era of college football in the near future. Brad Crawford, who covers college football for CBS Sports, believes the Sooners nailed it with the Nagy hire and that things will pan out in a positive way for Oklahoma. He made one bold prediction for each SEC team this week and believes that Nagy will be tabbed as the conference's best offseason hire. How often does someone in an off-the-field role take center stage in the SEC? The general manager position is rapidly gaining importance in college football. We're likely to see that evolution accelerate this season, thanks in part to the success already shown by Oklahoma with the arrival of Jim Nagy. He brings nearly two decades of personnel and scouting experience to Norman, drawn from the NFL and his time as executive director of the Senior Bowl. Most importantly, Nagy is coach Brent Venables' designated talent evaluator -- tasked with managing the roster and identifying the right personnel fits for what Oklahoma wants to build on both sides of the ball. - Brad Crawford, CBS Sports. Nagy's talent evaluation skills and roster management will be put to the test in Norman. It's been a rocky stretch at OU over the past few seasons, but the Sooners swung for the fences with multiple moves this offseason, one of the biggest being the Nagy hire. College football has changed so drastically in the first half of the 2020s. It's no secret that things have slipped at bit at Oklahoma. Bring in Jim Nagy is OU's big move to make sure that they can get back to the top. Oklahoma Sooners 2027 target among ESPN's best prospects

The Oklahoma Sooners are still working to shore up their 2026 recruiting class. High on their prospect board are top 100 players defensive end Jake Kreul and wide receiver Davian Groce. But as 2026 enters the final stretch, 2027 has also taken center stage as the Sooners hope to begin building momentum for next year's top prospects. 2027 four-star defensive tackle Jalen Brewster has caught the eye of the Oklahoma Sooners front office and coaching staff. They've been making a significant push for the Cedar Hill prospect and have had him on campus multiple times since issuing an offer to the North Texas prospect last August. He's already trending to be one of the top players at his position by the time the 2027 cycle finishes, and ESPN's Billy Tucker considers Brewster the No. 24 high school prospect in the nation regardless of recruiting class. Possessing violent hands and excellent play strength, Brewster is a power-based pass rusher with the ability to close with surprising quickness for his size. Those are the ingredients of an elite, disruptive interior defensive lineman. Coaches praise his motor, and there's no shortage of blue bloods vying to land his commitment. - Tucker, ESPN Jalen Brewster is the No. 1 offensive tackle across the board, and the No. 6 player according to Rivals and the No. 7 player in the class according to 247Sports. Brewster already has 21 Power Four offers and is a five-star prospect in the Rivals database. The Oklahoma Sooners have done a great job recruiting the defensive tackle position over the last several years, but Brewster could be the highest-rated prospect attracted to Oklahoma by head coach Todd Bates. Rivals currently gives the Sooners an edge in their recruiting prediction machine. There's a long way to go in his recruitment, but the Sooners are in a great spot for one of the best players in the 2027 recruiting class.
