11 die in stampede as RCB victory celebrations turn tragic at Bengaluru

The Hindu04-06-2025
What began as a day of rapturous celebration over the IPL victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) turned into one of crushing tragedy in Bengaluru on Wednesday evening when 11 people -- all aged below 40 -- died and 33 were injured when a massive build up of fans at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium led to chaos and stampede.
The tragedy unfolded near the gates of the stadium, where thousands of fans had gathered to mark RCB's historic first title win in 18 years. Overcrowding and narrow passageways led to a deadly rush. Mr. Siddaramaiah admitted that while the stadium could hold around 32,000 people, well over 2 lakh had gathered there. Doctors attributed all the deaths to asphyxia, a condition arising when the body is deprived of oxygen, causing unconsciousness or death.

Fit-again Renuka Singh returns as India women overlook Shafali Verma for Australia ODIs, World Cup

Explosive opener Shafali Verma was left out of the India women's cricket team's squads for the upcoming ODIs against Australia as well as the World Cup, with the selection committee instead persisting with Pratika Rawal. Renuka, meanwhile, has been out of action since March, having missed the tour of England along the way. While pacer Renuka Singh is set to make a comeback from injury, opener Shafali Verma has been overlooked for the Australia one-dayers as well as the ICC Women's World Cup. Image: PTI/AP Fit-again pacer Renuka Singh Thakur was on Tuesday along with top-order batter Pratika Rawal but the big-hitting Shafali Verma was left out. The squad will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur with Smriti Mandhana, who was also present at the selection meeting at BCCI's Mumbai headquarters, as her deputy in the ICC event which begins on September 30. The selectors also announced the squad for the three ODIs against Australia which precedes the World Cup with only one change in both the sides. The series begins on September 14. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Rawal, who has done exceptionally well in 14 ODIs, was chosen ahead of hard-hitting opener Shafali as the latter was excluded from both, with chairperson of selectors Neetu David saying the right-hander remains in their focus. 'Shafali played the Australia A series. She's in the system, it is not like that she's not. We've got our eyes on her. Hope she plays a lot more and garners experience, it'll help serve India in the 50-overs format in the future. We want a long career from Shafali,' Neetu said. All-rounder Amanjot Kaur has been given additional time to recover from her unspecified injury as she remains at the Centre of Excellence ahead of the World Cup, and in her place Sayali Satghare was named in the squad to face Australia as the solitary change in the two squads. 'She's one of the important players, she's at (the) COE, working on a few small niggles. We've rested her for the Australia series so that she can fully be available for the World Cup,' skipper Harmanpreet said. Renuka has been out of action since March and missed the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka followed by the tour of England, but the right-arm pacer is back in the side to lead the attack. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Renuka has been a precious player for us. She had (some) niggles and been out of the game, but is now available. She is (one of) our main players. This is a main event and it is great that she is a part of the team,' Neetu said. Besides Renuka, India have the young seamer Kranti Goud and Arundhati Reddy in the pace attack, which could also feature Amanjot. A power packed #TeamIndia squad for the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 💪 Harmanpreet Kaur to lead the 15 member squad 🙌🙌#WomenInBlue | #CWC25 — BCCI Women (@BCCIWomen) August 19, 2025 It is a largely settled squad which has been on a winning spree, and the selectors also stuck with young spinner Shree Charani, who grabbed 10 wickets in five T20Is against England to make a strong mark. Charani made her international debut only in April this year and has played eight ODIs and five T20Is since. Goud, whose aggression and attitude has impressed skipper Harmanpreet, took six wickets in the third ODI against England to tilt the result of the series in India's favour. On expected lines, the India squad is spin-heavy with Charani teaming up with senior pros Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana and Radha Yadav in the department which would be expected to do the heavy lifting for the home team. 'Spinners have always done well for the team even when we played in England, which is why we kept (most of them) in the playing XI. This is the best team we can have (for WC),' Harmanpreet said. R Ashwin shocked by Shreyas Iyer's Asia Cup snub: What wrong has he done?

Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has questioned the selectors for not picking Shreyas Iyer in India's Asia Cup 2025 squad. India announced a 15-member team for the continental tournament as Shubman Gill made his return to the T20I side after over a year and has been re-appointed as the captain of the Iyer failed to make it into the squad despite his consistent run in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He last played T20Is in the series against Australia in 2023 and has found himself out of contention of the format. Recently, Ravichandran Ashwin shared his views on Iyer's omission and asked what has he done wrong to be sidelined?advertisement'Shreyas Iyer has solid credentials. He was out of the team, but he made you win the Champions Trophy. If you argue that Shubman Gill is in blasting form, then Shreyas is also in some fine form. Who will answer all these questions? What Shreyas has done wrong,' asked Ashwin on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. Furthermore, he also mentioned his IPL performances for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) and also stated that he's countered his short-ball weaknesses.'He did brilliantly well for KKR, made them win. He was sent into the auction. He then took Punjab to the finals for the first time since 2014. He overcame the short ball problem. He was hitting the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Jasprit Bumrah with ease in the IPL. I am just extremely sad for him and Yashasvi Jaiswal; it is extremely unfair,' added is not in the selectors' scheme of things: Abhishek NayarFormer India cricketer Abhishek Nayar also expressed surprise at the fact that Iyer was also not named in the backup players, as the selection committee named a third wicketkeeper in Dhruv Jurel."I can't fathom or understand what reason could justify Shreyas Iyer not being part of the 20-member squad. I'm not even talking about the final 15, but the 20 itself, which sends a clear message that Shreyas Iyer is not in the selectors' scheme of things, at least from a T20 perspective,' said Nayar on has played 51 T20Is for India and scored 1104 runs at an average of 30.66 with eight fifties to his name. However, he has transformed his game ever since he last played for the country. In the recent IPL season, he scored 604 runs from 17 innings at an average of 50.33 and a thunderous strike rate of 175.07 with six fifties to his from that, he also led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title under his leadership in 2024 and guided Punjab Kings (PBKS) to just their second appearance in the final after a whopping 10 years. Despite his phenomenal run, the star batter is unlucky to make his way back into the T20I reckoning and continues to wait for his chance.- EndsMust Watch
