Starlink Rival AST SpaceMobile Wants to Launch 243 Giant Satellites by 2028
As it seeks to compete with SpaceX's cellular Starlink service, AST SpaceMobile has an ambitious goal—launch 243 more satellites by 2028.
AST mentioned the goal in an FCC filing as it tries to secure regulatory clearance to operate the FM1, a prototype satellite slated to launch from India in July.
The FM1 is the company's first stab at a second-generation BlueBird satellite, which is designed to beam cellular connectivity to phones on the ground. In March, AST filed for experimental authority with the FCC to start tests with the prototype satellite. On Monday, it provided more details after the FCC told AST its original application was 'incomplete.'
One of the new documents shows that AST envisions launching 243 second-generation BlueBirds from now until 2028. Each satellite is designed to operate for up to seven years before it's de-orbited and set on a path to burn up in the Earth's atmosphere.
The satellites are huge, with a communication antenna spanning 223 square meters. That's about three times larger than AST's first-gen BlueBird satellites, five of which are currently in orbit.
The document adds that FM1 has a mass of 5,830 kilograms (nearly 13,000 pounds) — or about 10 times the mass of a V2 Mini Optimized satellite for Starlink.
However, future iterations of the second-generation BlueBird satellites will be smaller at 4,210 kilograms, thanks to the 'use of composite material,' the document says. The second-generation BlueBirds have been designed to deploy at about 520 kilometers (323 miles) in altitude before elevating themselves to 700km.
The goal of launching 243 more satellites by 2028 is certainly ambitious, but it will be easier said than done. AST plans to use SpaceX's Falcon 9 to launch next-generation BlueBirds and Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket. The latter only just conducted its maiden flight in January; the rocket successfully reached orbit, but the first-stage booster botched its landing.
The new FCC filing also mentions an FM2 satellite, suggesting the company is preparing another prototype BlueBird. As a result, satellite industry analyst Tim Farrar said: "Looks like the start of a satellite redesign and extended delay."
The other issue is that AST still needs FCC clearance to launch and commercially operate its satellite constellation for use in the US. So far, the FCC has deferred on the company's original request to operate an additional 243 satellites. AST has yet to file a follow-up application.
AST submitted the documents to the FCC after SpaceX criticized the company's initial proposal for the FM1 satellite, including its plans to prevent the craft from posing a hazard in Earth's orbit. In response, AST submitted a new 'orbit debris assessment report,' which maintains that the company's FM1 and future satellites comply with orbital safety regulations.
Despite the new filing, the FCC sent an email to AST on Tuesday, demanding that it resolve several lingering questions and possible inaccuracies and errors in the documentation.
Although AST wants to launch 248 satellites, the company has said it only needs 45 to 60 BlueBirds in orbit to start offering continuous satellite connectivity to partners, including AT&T and Verizon.

New Texas Laws Open a Wild West for Corporate Governance
Elon Musk scored a major victory this month when Tesla awarded him $29 billion, a 'first step' in a long-promised payday. It was also a win for Texas, where Tesla is now incorporated. A new law in the state helped pave the way for Musk's pay package after it was initially blocked by a Delaware judge. Texas' low corporate tax rate and employer-friendly labor laws have long made it an attractive place for businesses, but most big companies — two-thirds of the Fortune 500 — still incorporate in Delaware. Corporate America's backlash to a string of decisions by Delaware courts, including the one voiding Musk's pay package, has heightened the opportunity for Texas to compete for corporate domicile. Some major companies, including SpaceX, Dropbox and TripAdvisor, have decided to leave (or rather, as the exodus from Delaware has been named, 'Dexit'). Over the past few months, the Texas Legislature has passed several bills that could help attract Delaware's defectors by shifting more power from shareholders to executives. Under the new laws: Businesses incorporated in Texas can ban lawsuits from all but their biggest owners. Companies have the power to pass a bylaw that mandates that shareholders own at least a 3 percent stake in order to sue. That effectively shields companies from shareholder lawsuits, since so few of them meet that criteria. Tesla was quick to take advantage of the new law, passing a bylaw in May that helped clear Musk's blockbuster payday. Corporations incorporated or headquartered in Texas can restrict shareholder proposals to only their largest shareholders. That covers those owning at least $1 million in stock or 3 percent of the company. That helps companies like Exxon Mobil, which is headquartered in Texas but incorporated in New Jersey, avoid activist shareholder proposals on issues like climate change. Last year, Exxon sued the investor groups Arjuna Capital and Follow This over shareholder proposals that pushed the company to limit its greenhouse gas emissions. Proxy advisers face hurdles to disagreeing with management. These firms, which make recommendations for how shareholders vote on company issues, must publicly disclose that they incorporated 'nonfinancial factors' and 'subordinated the financial interest of shareholders' if they take into account environmental, social or governance issues when advising clients to vote against a company. Because nearly all shareholder proposals touch on E.S.G. issues, the measure effectively blocks proxy advisers from siding against management on any shareholder proposal. The aim is to tell boards and executives in Delaware that 'Texas is open for business,' said Nathan Jensen, a government professor at the University of Texas-Austin. States have been competing for corporate charters since the late 1800s. The incentives are high: About 30 percent of Delaware's revenue in 2024 came from franchise taxes. Politicians often claim new charters as a political victory, framing Delaware's court decisions as examples of unnecessary interference. When Tesla reincorporated in Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott wrote on X: 'Congrats Elon on getting the pay you were promised and on your new incorporation in Texas.' Upcoming SpaceX launches in Florida: Mysterious space plane and NASA resupply mission
The Space Coast is in for two rare lanches this coming week − the mysterious Space Force space plane and a space station resupply mission for NASA. Of course, this is if the weather doesn't ruin the opportunity and everything else lines up perfectly. First up is the launch of the secretive Space Force X-37B space plane. The launch is slated for no earlier than August 21 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center Pad 39A., atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, according to a Space Force press release. A launch time has not yet been announced. There are few details on the Boeing-built X-37B space plane, a Space Force vehicle which is seeing its eighth mission less than six months after completing its last. The X-37B landed in early March at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California after spending over 430 days cruising around the Earth. The reusable space plane first launched in 2010. The last time the Space Coast saw the X-37B launch was back in December 2023. To date the vehicle has seen over 4,200 days in orbit. According to Boeing, the X-37B will be carrying experiments for the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Defense Innovation Unit on this mission. When is the next Florida rocket launch? Upcoming NASA, SpaceX, ULA rocket launch schedule at Cape Canaveral It will also be testing a new sensor, which will enable GPS contact where communication would have previously been difficult − including beyond Earth orbit and around the moon, according to Boeing. Due to the X-37B being a classified Space Force mission, further details remain limited. SpaceX CRS-33 resupply mission for NASA Next up is a SpaceX resupply mission to the International Space Station for NASA. Set for no earlier than 2:45 a.m. Sunday, August 24, the mission is known as CRS-33. The mission is SpaceX's 33rd ISS resupply mission for NASA. The cargo mission includes a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft full of supplies and science for the astronauts onboard the ISS. The resupply spacecraft will be launched atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 40 in Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. With the spacecraft headed to the International Space Station, the rocket will fly on a northeast trajectory upon liftoff. While docked to the ISS, the Dragon spacecraft will do something new − it will use a new propulsion system to give a boost to the space station, slightly raising its orbit over a period of time.
