Manolo returns to FC Goa after official India exit

Manolo Marquez had a dual role last season, taking charge of the national team and continuing with his job as coach of FC Goa
Panaji: Manolo Marquez has signed a new one-year contract with
FC Goa
after officially ending his stint as coach of the national football team.
The Spanish coach had a dual role last season, taking charge of the national team and continuing with his job as coach of Goa.
The experiment didn't fetch expected results as India won just one of the eight matches, so a month into his contract as a full-time coach, he decided it was best to part ways, mutually.
Early this month, the AIFF executive committee considered the request and decided to terminate the two-year contract, without any financial implication.
'Once freed from his contract, it was only a mere formality for him to return to FC Goa,' a senior official told TOI on Thursday.
AIFF has also terminated the contracts of Benito Montalvo (asst head coach), Jose Barroso (S&C coach) and Marc Gamon (goalkeeping coach). Two of the coaches – Benito and Marc – will continue with Manolo at Goa.
Manolo achieved impressive results for his clubs – Hyderabad and Goa – winning trophies over five seasons in the country, but he will not look back at his national team stint with any fondness. India won one game out of eight that they played, a friendly against lower-ranked Maldives.

His side also failed to score in the last two games, against Thailand (0-1) and Hong Kong (0-2), both of which they lost.
For Goa, Manolo was a big hit, guiding the team to a second-placed finish in the ISL last season, and topping it with the Super Cup triumph. The win helped qualify for Asian competitions.
Goa are preparing for the crucial AFC Champions League Two clash against Oman champions Al Seeb. Should the hosts cross the preliminary hurdle at Fatorda on Aug 13, they will move to the group stage where
Cristiano Ronaldo
's Al-Nassr FC will be one of the participants.
Manolo's return to Goa will hardly raise eyebrows, given that the experienced Spanish coach had made his admiration for the club known. Goa, too, were ready to welcome him with open arms.
'I think only a fool would turn down the opportunity to have Manolo as coach,' Goa CEO Ravi Puskur said during a Townhall With TOI last week. 'Given that he has expressed satisfaction at his time in Goa, we would obviously look to renew that partnership.
'From a pure numerical value, he is the most successful coach Goa have had. He built a very good group last season, perhaps the most united I've seen in the last ten years at the club. A large part of that is due to the coach's mentality.'

Pakistan humiliated! Crumble to lowest T20I total vs Bangladesh in series opener

Image credit: Bangladesh Cricket Board Fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman starred with the ball as Bangladesh cruised to a seven-wicket win over Pakistan in the first T20I in Dhaka on Sunday. Chasing a modest 111, opener Parvez Hossain smashed an unbeaten 56 to seal victory in just 15.3 overs and give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Put into bat, Pakistan crumbled to their lowest T20I total against Bangladesh — 110 all out in 19.3 overs. Taskin returned figures of 3 for 22, while Mustafizur was miserly with 2 for 6 in four overs. Pakistan's previous lowest against Bangladesh was 127/5 at the same venue in 2021. Despite an early double-strike from debutant pacer Salman Mirza (2/23), who dismissed Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das cheaply, Bangladesh recovered swiftly. Parvez and Towhid Hridoy (36) stitched together a crucial 73-run stand for the third wicket to ease the chase. Parvez was in fine form, hitting five sixes and three boundaries during his 39-ball knock, finishing unbeaten on 56. The win marked only Bangladesh's fourth victory over Pakistan in 23 T20Is. Earlier, Pakistan endured a nightmare start, losing half their side for just 46 by the eighth over. Saim Ayub (6), Mohammad Haris (4), captain Salman Agha (3), Hasan Nawaz (0), and Mohammad Nawaz (3) all fell cheaply. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like When the Camera Clicked at the Worst Possible Time Read More Undo India camp hit by more injuries, Playing XI TENSION before Manchester Test vs England Fakhar Zaman top-scored with 44 off 34 balls, including six fours and a six. Reflecting on the loss, skipper Salman Agha said: 'It wasn't enough on the board as we lost wickets at regular intervals, which we have to talk about before the second game.' Litton Das acknowledged the challenge of batting on a slow pitch: 'It's not an easy wicket to bat on, but the way we batted, it looked good. We took early wickets and that's the key point.' WI vs AUS: Mitchell Marsh confirms he won't bowl anymore due to back issues

Mitchell Marsh "First and foremost, it's always 'we're representing Australia, we're here to win the series' and culturally, that's how we want to go about it," said Marsh in his capacity as T20I captain. Australian cricket captain Mitchell Marsh has confirmed he will play solely as a batsman across all formats due to recurring back problems, as Australia prepares to face West Indies in a five-match T20I series starting July 20 at Sabina Park. The announcement comes after Marsh missed the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year due to injury. Australia has announced their playing XI for the opening match in Jamaica, with Jake Fraser-McGurk included as a replacement for Spencer Johnson. Owen will make his debut, while Short has been sent home due to a minor side strain sustained during training. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!
