Manchester United women booked their place in the final of the inaugural World Sevens tournament by beating local rivals Manchester City 2-0.
The Red Devils finished top of their group after wins over AS Roma, SL Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage.
United started brightly, and Simi Awujo had the first effort on goal but ballooned her shot from an acute angle.
Leah Galton hasn't scored yet in the tournament but she almost opened her account when she charged down a clearance but could only drag her effort wide.
United did not need to wait much longer to get their noses in front however, as on four minutes Melvine Malard scored with a world-class strike.
The French forward expertly controlled a long ball up the pitch and instantly turned to rifle an unstoppable effort into the top corner. United have scored some great goals so far in Portugal but this could have been the pick of the bunch.
Marc Skinner's side almost instantly doubled their lead but Elisabeth Terland's strike was well blocked by the keeper.
City had plenty of the ball but failed to get past a water-tight United defence. Just before the half-time break, Awujo had a shot from distance parried away by Khiara Keating.
Both sides struggled to carve out many clear-cut chances at the beginning of the second half until the 24th minute.
Galton broke free of the City defence and teed up Grace Clinton, but the usually deadly finisher rattled the crossbar when she really should have scored.
Nonetheless, United responded in the best way possible and Gabby George's great solo goal gave them a 2-0 lead with just five minutes to play.
The defender raced down the touchline and beat the City player for pace and strength. She kept her composure and dinked the ball past Keating to put United in the driving seat.
Skinner's side largely kept their opposition at bay until the 29th minute when Poppy Pritchard fired an effort wide after breaking free from the United defence.
That was to be the last attempt of the game and it would be the team from the red half of Manchester that would make the final.
United will take on Bayern Munich later on tonight, hoping to have better luck than they had in the FA Cup final last weekend against Chelsea.

Club World Cup: Jack Grealish left out of Man City squad

MIAMI (AP) — Jack Grealish has been left out of Manchester City's squad for the Club World Cup. City manager Pep Guardiola named a 27-man squad for the tournament, which kicks off in Miami on Saturday, with Grealish a notable omission. The England forward was a British record signing when he moved to City from Aston Villa for 100 million pounds ($139 million then) in 2021 and went on to help the club win three Premier League titles, the Champions League and a host of other trophies. But he has become an increasingly peripheral figure and made only seven league starts last season. The 29-year-old Grealish's absence from the Club World Cup will add to the growing expectation that he will leave during the offseason, with Guardiola embarking on a squad rebuild following the team's first trophyless season in eight years. City's squad includes four new players signed in time to take part in the month-long tournament in the United States: Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli. In January, City also spent big to sign Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis as Guardiola began his overhaul of a squad that saw its dominance of English soccer broken by Liverpool last season. If Grealish goes, he is likely to be one of a number of players to move on. Kevin De Bruyne is leaving at the end of his contract this month and Kyle Walker is also likely to go after a loan move to AC Milan in January; as expected, neither player was in the squad. City's first match at the 32-team tournament is against Wydad Casablanca next Wednesday in Philadelphia. The other teams in the group are Juventus and Abu Dhabi's Al Ain. ___ James Robson is at ___

England midfielder Angel Gomes reaches agreement in principle to join Marseille on free transfer

England midfielder Angel Gomes has reached an agreement in principle to join Marseille on a free transfer, the French club have announced. All four of the 24-year-old's international appearances came under interim head coach Lee Carsley in 2024, and he will now join Marseille after his contract at Ligue 1 rivals Lille expired this summer. The former Manchester United academy midfielder made 134 first-team appearances for Lille across four seasons, but an injury-hit 2024-25 campaign limited him to just 20 appearances and 10 league starts. He spent the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Portuguese top-flight club Boavista, scoring six goals in 31 appearances, before returning to Lille the following season. Advertisement Gomes made his United senior debut under Jose Mourinho in May 2017 but found first-team opportunities hard to come by and decided not to renew his contract in the summer of 2020, ahead of his move to France. Marseille, who finished second in Ligue 1, confirmed their qualification for next season's Champions League with a 3-1 victory over Le Havre on May 16. ()
