Husband arrested for stabbing Kannada TV actress Shruthi days after she returned to live with him

Indian Express12-07-2025
The Bengaluru police have arrested the husband of Kannada TV actress and anchor Shruthi for allegedly stabbing her at their home in Hanumanthanagar on July 4 just three days after she had returned with her two daughters, having lived separately for months over a matrimonial dispute.
Shruthi, 38, whose real name is Manjula C, was allegedly attacked with pepper spray and stabbed multiple times by Amaresh H S who was arrested last week on the basis of the actress's complaint to the police from her hospital bed.
The accused, who was booked under section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, moved a sessions court for bail on Tuesday, and on Friday the court posted the matter for orders on July 16.
Shruthi is known for her role in the popular Kannada series 'Amruthadhare' on a private channel and as an anchor on television shows.
According to the police complaint, she had married Amaresh 20 years ago but the marriage soured and the couple lived separately on account of his violent behaviour.
The complaint stated that Amaresh began troubling Shruthi over financial and family issues around five years after their marriage. In April this year, she reportedly moved to her brother's house after filing a police complaint over Amaresh's harassment.
'When she was staying with her brother, Amaresh would frequently call her and demand money for lease payment and jewellery. He also threatened to kill her,' as per the First Information Report (FIR).
Three days before she was stabbed, Amaresh reportedly convinced Shruthi's brother to send her back to his house by promising to look after her and the children. Based on the assurances, the actress said she returned to his house along with the children.
According to the police, on July 4, her children went to college and the husband also left home in the morning. Amaresh, however, returned at noon and when she opened the door, he allegedly attacked her with the pepper spray before stabbing her multiple times as she tried to fight back and escape.
The actress was rescued by neighbours and others who heard her screams and intervened. She was subsequently admitted to Victoria Hospital for treatment.

Tripura CM Manik Saha bats for better implementation of new criminal laws, hopes it will push up conviction rate

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha Sunday described the three new criminal laws – Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) – as victim-friendly. He expressed hope that the better implementation of these three laws would push up the conviction rate in the state. 'We have seen that these are friendly Acts. To implement criminal laws, the stakeholders are required to work in coordination and benefit the common people. I urge you all to cooperate with each other,' CM Saha said while addressing a workshop on 'New Criminal Laws and NDPS Act' held for legal practitioners, the police, and administrative officers at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala. 'I think this workshop is a step in this direction. Awareness is very important. People don't know about that. But every person should know these laws, and for this, I think, awareness campaigns should be done vigorously,' he added. 'These laws reflect a victim-friendly, technology-driven, and time-bound approach to justice delivery… The FIR (First Information Report) can be filed from anywhere, any part of the country, or across the state without being physically present in the police station and irrespective of the jurisdiction. The victims are entitled to have a free copy of their FIRs. Victims are to be informed about the status of their cases every 90 days…' said CM Saha.

Dehradun police books YouTuber for derogatory song targeting Uttarakhand women

DEHRADUN: Dehradun police has initiated legal action against a YouTuber accused of making derogatory remarks against the women of Uttarakhand, thereby hurting their honour. According to the police sources, YouTuber Pawan Semwal was summoned from Delhi to Dehradun for questioning in connection with a case registered following complaints from women. Semwal is alleged to have sung and broadcasted the controversial song on his YouTube channel, with the aim of spreading disrespect towards the women of Devbhoomi (Land of Gods). A spokesperson of Dehradun Police told, Pawan Semwal, using his Facebook ID, had broadcasted a song on a YouTube channel that contained objectionable comments, attempting to disrespect the modesty of Uttarakhandi women and daughters. "Following an initial outcry, the accused had previously removed the video from his YouTube channel. However, on Saturday, he allegedly re-propagated the same song on the same YouTube channel via his Facebook ID, making another attempt to publicly spread contempt against the women of Uttarakhand," spokesperson claimed. Distraught by the offensive song, a woman lodged a complaint at Kotwali Patel Nagar. Based on this complaint, a case was registered against Pawan Semwal under Sections 196, 353(1)(b), and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Subsequently, a police team summoned the accused Pawan Semwal from Kalyanpuri Police Station in Delhi, as per due procedure. "After detailed questioning here, he was served a notice under Section 35(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and safely released from the police station," a police official stated. "The accused has also been instructed to fully cooperate in future investigations." This action, according to the police, sends a clear message that "any kind of abusive comments or acts that hurt the honour on social media will not be tolerated."
