Head-on, high-speed crash shakes up downtown Chesterton
The normal tranquility of a summer Monday morning in downtown Chesterton was shattered when a man driving at a high rate of speed crossed the center lane and crashed head-on into another vehicle. The driver then fled, and pedestrians saw that he left a toddler in a car seat inside the vehicle, according to an eyewitness. The child was not seriously hurt but was taken to a local hospital to be checked, police said. Chesterton police arrested the man near the crash scene, just south of Calumet Road and Broadway at 11 a.m. Monday. The 51-year-old Porter man was taken to a local hospital and several charges are pending, Police Chief Tim Richardson said. A witness told police that she was at Grant Avenue when she saw a white Cadillac DeVille traveling at a high rate of speed go airborne after going over the tracks. The Cadillac then passed a vehicle and went southbound into the northbound lane, crashing head-on into a Ford Bronco driven by a 70-year-old Chicago woman, police said. Nicki Caylor watched the chaotic scene unfold from inside the Running Vines restaurant she runs at the corner of Calumet Road and Broadway. Caylor gave the following account in a social media posting: She saw the man drive the vehicle – at 60 to 70 mph – swerve around a Subaru and then go southbound in the northbound lane of Calumet Road, which is two lanes with cars parked on both sides. The man in the car 'pinballed' off a few parked cars and then struck a northbound vehicle head-on. 'I was already walking outside to see what was going on and if anyone needed help. That's when I saw the male driver climb out of the passenger side and run away,' Caylor said. That's when Caylor and others saw that there was a crying baby – who looked to be a toddler – improperly secured in a car seat facing the wrong way. 'The car was filled with smoke, but it was starting to clear,' Caylor said. There was spilled fuel on the ground, so Caylor said they knew they had to get the baby out. Not only was the car seat facing the wrong way, but it had been zip-tied. Caylor said they managed to cut the seat belt and anchors and freed the child. Chesterton police officers arrived, and the man started physically attacking them. Officers de-escalated the situation and got him safely to the ground, Caylor said. 'I'm blown away by the calm, collected presence of the officers – and honestly everyone,' Caylor said.

CT state police charge 19-year-old in three-car crash that seriously injured herself, truck driver
A teenager was arrested this week in connection with a three-vehicle crash in June 2024 on Route 2 in Preston that seriously injured her as well another driver and left a third person with minor injuries. Daniechka Garcia-Martinez, 19, of Norwich turned herself in after troopers obtained a warrant for her arrest following an investigation that reportedly found she was at fault for the serious crash, according to Connecticut State Police. She faces charges of second-degree assault, reckless driving, failure to drive in proper lane and operating a motor vehicle without a license. According to the warrant affidavit, emergency crews responded to reports of the crash on June 28, 2024, around 2 p.m. Garcia-Martinez, who was driving a 2008 Honda Accord west in the right lane, crossed the fog line in the right shoulder, leading to one of her passenger side tires striking a curb, the warrant affidavit said. The vehicle then veered back across the right lane and to the left, striking a 1989 International S Series 1754 truck that was headed west in the left lane and began to move into the right lane, state police wrote. The Honda then spun out of control in front of the truck. A 2023 Ford Bronco being driven east then collided with the driver side of the Honda, the warrant affidavit said. The Honda then settled along a metal cable guardrail. The truck that had been struck was now partially in the eastbound lane where it struck the rear driver side of the Bronco, the warrant affidavit said. The truck then left the road out of control and struck multiple trees. According to the warrant affidavit, the truck driver and Garcia-Martinez were trapped in their vehicles after the collision. They each suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital. The driver of the Ford suffered minor injuries, state police wrote in the warrant affidavit. The investigation found that Garcia-Martinez did not have a license to drive and was operating by herself with only a permit, the warrant affidavit said. State police investigators said she was going faster than the truck when she passed it on the right and left the road, where she hit a curb, causing her to lose control of the Accord, according to the warrant affidavit. Garcia-Martinez is free on a $30,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on July 22.

Boise man in DUI crash was nearly 3 times over legal limit. Here's his sentence
A Boise man whose alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit will go to prison after he seriously injured another driver while speeding down Cloverdale Road last November. Fourth Judicial District Senior Judge Michael Reardon sentenced Shane Sperry to 12 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to felony aggravated driving under the influence, according to a Wednesday news release from the Ada County Prosecutor's Office. Reardon retained jurisdiction over the 21-year-old's criminal case and placed him on an alternative sentencing option known as a rider. That means he'll spend roughly the next year in prison before having a hearing to review his progress in front of Reardon. If Sperry does well on his rider, he could be released on probation, but if he doesn't, he could go to prison for at least another year, and up to 10 more. Sperry was driving an estimated 95 mph on Cloverdale Road — in a 45-mph zone — in the early hours of Nov. 24 when he collided with a Ford Bronco driven by a woman who was turning onto Cloverdale from her subdivision, the prosecutor's office said. She sustained a nasal bone fracture and lacerations to her face. The crash was investigated by the Ada County Sheriff's Office, which found through a breath test that Sperry's alcohol content was .226, the release said. The legal limit is .08. 'We are grateful the victim survived this devastating crash,' Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts said in the release. 'This case is a reminder of the dangers of impaired and reckless driving, and I want to thank the Ada County Sheriff's Office and our prosecution team for their work in holding Mr. Sperry accountable.'
