Afternoon Briefing: Severe weather strikes south suburbs

Yahoo20-03-2025
Good afternoon, Chicago.
Despite the snow that fell on parts of the Chicago area, today marks the spring equinox. And you know what that means: Chicagohenge. Twice a year, during the spring and fall equinoxes, the rising and setting sun lines up with Chicago's east-west street grid, creating spectacular photo opportunities as the sun is framed within Chicago's skyline.
Here's how it works — and where to see it during sunrise and sunset.
And here's what else is happening today. And remember, for the latest breaking news in Chicago, visit chicagotribune.com/latest-headlines and sign up to get our alerts on all your devices.

Overnight storms cause more damage, possible lightning strike sparks house fire

Storms continued overnight, bringing heavy rain and lightning across Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. One home caught fire after a reported lightning strike. CBS News Meteorologist Kylee Miller reported there were at least 10,000 lightning strikes overnight into Sunday. The storms brought multiple reports of damaged homes, flooded basements and roads, and power outages. As of 8 a.m. on Sunday, more than 65,000 ComEd customers were left without power. The company said 80% of outages are expected to be restored by 9 p.m. Sunday, and the rest by early afternoon on Monday. In Oswego, 3 to 4 feet of standing water were left in the Fox Chase subdivision. At Center Street, before Interstate 80 in Joliet, a car was left stranded due to the flooding. Drivers are reminded not to drive through standing water, to turn around and take alternative routes to avoid being stranded. One resident in Romeoville told CBS News Chicago that the storms caused a tree to fall on their home and flooded their basement. They also mentioned that they just bought the home only a month ago. In Downers Grove, flames were seen shooting from the second floor of a home early Sunday morning near Douglas and 41st Street. Fire crews were able to extinguish the flames. Reports said the fire was caused by lightning. Fire officials have not confirmed that detail or if anyone was hurt. Most of the storms will diminish by late morning, but a chance for an isolated pop-up storm in the afternoon is still possible.

Heat can't keep crowds away from Chicago Air & Water Show on the lakefront

The stifling heat on Saturday did not stop tens of thousands of people from packing the lakefront for the first day of the Chicago Air & Water Show. Fans at North Avenue beach did their best to stay cool while enjoying the show, many bringing personal fans to beat the heat as they watched the Thunderbirds and other high-flying acts. "We have our chairs, and we have our umbrella to shade us from the sun. We have our beautiful fans," said Roseanna Thompson. She and her husband, Nathaniel, showed up early for what they called the best seat in the house. "He was giving me a hard time about our setup, because he thinks I do too much," she said. It might have seemed like too much, but once they got there, it was the perfect setup, especially as temperatures climbed into the 90s. "Now he's so proud of it. He's just looking around just taking in all the compliments," Roseanna said. "Yeah, I'm cool now" Nathaniel said. "We come out here together, spend the day together. It's great," Nathieal said. Keeping their eyes on the Thunderbirds while staying cool seemed to be the main focus on day one for the crowds on the lakefront. Not far down the beach from the Thompsons, Dwayne Ford was enjoying the show with his family. "They love to see the water show and see the airplanes and see the tricks they do," he said. While Ford has brought the kids to see the show the past few year, it was mom's first time here. "It's amazing. Like he said, it's hot our here, but you don't even think about it when you see the planes just doing these tricks. It's like, wow," Desirea Watson said. "I like when they do spirals, and then they do freefalls," Maysen Ford said. The key is to come prepared and stay hydrated, especially with another packed day ahead on Sunday.

Severe storms rolling into Chicago area from Wisconsin amid hot Saturday

Strong storms are moving into the Chicago area from Wisconsin and could bring damaging winds, hail, and torrential rain. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued through 7 p.m. for Cook, DuPage, Kane, McHenry, Kendall, Lake, Will, and DeKalb counties in Illinois; and Porter and Lake counties in Indiana. A severe thunderstorm warning also has been issued for parts of Lake and McHenry counties through 4:15 p.m. Strong storms with wind gusts of up to 60 mph began moving into northern Illinois from Wisconsin around 3 p.m. The waves of storms will be aggravated by the heat in Chicago, where temperatures reached the mid 90s on Saturday afternoon. Waves of strong storms are expected to continue through around 7 p.m. before moving off to the southeast. More heavy rain and storms are possible Sunday morning before things calm down later in the day.
