Ella's 30th Anniversary Concert Review: A Rock ‘N' Roll Time Machine With A Heart
Ella rocked Genting Highlands' Arena of Stars to celebrate 30 years of her iconic album Ella USA over the weekend. Over 4,200 fans packed the venue, turning it into a roaring rock party fuelled by powerful vocals, unforgettable hits, and endless love for one of Malaysia's true rock legends.
From the moment the iconic opening track 'Ala Amerika' echoed through the arena, the crowd was instantly swept back to the 90s – the era when Ella's fiery voice first stormed the local music scene. Fans leapt to their feet, dancing and belting out every lyric like time had paused. It was a shared moment of pure nostalgia, reminding us why her music has transcended generations.

Collaboration
Adding an electrifying twist to the night was none other than legendary Japanese shredder Kyoji Yamamoto. Flying in all the way from Hawaii, Kyoji's blistering riffs injected pure rock adrenaline, especially on anthems like 'Rindu' and 'Penawar.' His presence wasn't just a cool cameo – it was a rare reunion recalling the original 1992 Osaka and Tokyo tour with Ella, plus the recording sessions in the chilly studios of LA and San Francisco where 'Ella USA' was born.
On stage, Kyoji's guitar work was a masterclass in precision and passion, sending chills through even the most stoic fans. Then came the slow burners 'Menanti' and 'Mungkin,' pulling at heartstrings so deeply that a few couldn't hold back tears as raw emotion spilled from the stage.

Storytelling
Experience
Ella did more than sing – she pulled the crowd backstage with tales of recording 'Ella USA' in snowy LA, sharing stories that gave a raw glimpse into the grit and passion behind the music. Vintage footage flickered on the big screen, making us feel like we were right there beside her through those creative days. This wasn't just nostalgia; it was a celebration of artistry and resilience, giving Malaysian fans a unique insight into a rock legend's journey.

Production
The stage design was sleek and timeless, stripping away distractions to keep every eye glued to the music and its makers. Lighting shifted perfectly – intimate blues during the emotional ballads, vibrant reds and purples for rockers like 'PLR' and 'Kembara Kita.' Lyrics projected on screen invited the entire arena into a massive sing-along – a communal joy that felt almost sacred.
Sonically, the show hit the mark – zero autotune, zero fluff. Just raw, powerful vocals and jaw-dropping guitar wizardry. The drums and bass locked in tight, driving every track with precision. It was a perfect reminder of why Ella and Kyoji still rule the rock throne 30 years on.

This wasn't just a concert – it was a celebration of community. Genting Malaysia's CSR program gifted free tickets to local heroes – teachers, firefighters, and rescue squads – recognising their everyday rockstar moments. This heartfelt tribute added a layer of unity and gratitude that made the night even more special, reminding us that real-life heroes often don't get the spotlight they deserve.

As someone who wasn't a die-hard Ella fan growing up, I found myself swept up in the magic. This was more than a concert; it was a cultural heartbeat bridging generations, blending stories, memories, and the enduring spirit of Malaysian rock. The emotional rollercoaster – from tearjerkers to anthems that made the whole crowd dance – showcased Ella's ability to evolve, inspire, and unite us in sound and soul.
Ella isn't just a rock legend – she's the heartbeat of Malaysian music, still setting stages ablaze 30 years on. With every note, every story, and every roar from the crowd, she reminds us why her fire never fades. Here's to many more decades of Ella owning the rock throne and inspiring every generation that follows.

Actor Shaun Chen saves more after moving family from Singapore to Johor
Malaysian actor Shaun Chen revealed in September last year that he had moved his family from Singapore to Johor. Photo: Shaun Chen/Instagram Local actor Shaun Chen made headlines in September last year after revealing that he had relocated his family across the Causeway. The 46-year-old, who's based in Singapore, now reportedly lives in a rented home in Johor with his Malaysian wife Celine and their two daughters – Nellie, nine, and Neia, seven. In a recent interview with actor-host Allan Wu, Chen described the move back to his home country as a 'natural and logical' decision. 'Since we're Malaysians, we have an advantage. We can reduce our living expenses and stay in a bigger home. 'If we had stayed in Singapore, I don't know if I'd ever have a chance to stay in a landed home as I'm not Singaporean,' he said. Chen, who's a permanent resident in Singapore, also cited the rising cost of education and general living expenses in the country as factors behind his family's move to Johor. According to the Mediacorp star, the fees for public school and after-school care for permanent residents in Singapore is on par with the fees for international schools in Malaysia. When asked to estimate how much he's been able to save since relocating, Chen answered that the figure falls between 30% and 50%. Although he now enjoys a more comfortable lifestyle in Malaysia, the actor hasn't ruled out the possibility of living in Singapore again in the future. 'I don't think it's a downgrade. I've upgraded my lifestyle,' he said, before quickly adding, 'But that doesn't mean Singapore isn't good!'

Veterinarian turns marriage reception into a petting zoo
WHAT is a wedding without a feast, well according to Malaysian expectations? Despite living in a melting pot of culture, we can all agree that Malaysians love their feasts, the bigger the better. But sometimes, people decide to do things differently, and the result is jaw-dropping. Recently, a wedding reception grabbed quite the attention for its very unique theme. Apparently, the bride was a veterinarian and the couple just wouldn't do things the conventional way. Lain dari yang lain ni wedding..🤩🤣 dah macam zoo pulak. — ًِ (@bckupacc99) June 9, 2025 The attendees found themselves in a zoo, complete with a massive python slithering about, lesser-sized snakes for necklace, frogs and exotic birds as exhibits. This is one wedding invitation you do not want to miss. Unsurprisingly, netizens were wowed by the very unique theme. Prompted by the video, netizen @naz_frhn12 perhaps jokingly said he wanted to marry a dentist. 'So when I get married, do I need to make an air conditioning expo,' said @Bdk_DenGgi whose profession must be linked to the device. Another netizen who saw the video added that it reminded her of the celebrity Ning Baizura's wedding where there was a goat pen right in the middle of the wedding hall. However, several netizens noted the presence of the snake at the wedding which was a cause for fear. 'I will just eat in the car. I am afraid of snakes,' said @nasrulofkoz while another said he would just greet the bride and groom. Looking at the video, one can only wonder if they served exotic meat for food too. Hilariously, @runrickyrunrun even compared the wedding to the movie Jumanji. For those not in the know, Jumanji is a fantasy adventure film centred around a mysterious and magical board game that brings its jungle-themed hazards to life in the real world. When players roll the dice, they must survive wild animals, natural disasters, and other dangers until the game is completed. Regardless, we can be certain there is nothing life-threatening about this very interesting wedding. On another note, we do hope the animals on exhibit get fed well too, unlike the guests. As for the huge python, we are a little cautious to issue the same statement. —June 11, 2025 Main image: @bckupacc99 (X)

Six years after his last sold-out tour in Malaysia, internationally acclaimed Swedish-Lebanese artist Maher Zain is set to make his long-awaited return to South-East Asia with a full concert tour. Known for his uplifting music and powerful message of hope, unity, and faith, Maher's comeback has been met with excitement across the region. The announcement was first made on his official social media channels on Monday and was formally confirmed during a press conference held on Wednesday (June 6) in Petaling Jaya. The multi-platinum recording artist and humanitarian will perform in Kuala Lumpur on August 16, Singapore on August 21, and Kota Kinabalu on August 23 as part of his highly anticipated South-East Asia Tour 2025, organised by Yayasan Tengku Abdullah (YTA). The official promoters are well-known Malaysian event company Hitman Solutions and Happymoon, in association with Awakening Music. Fuelled by overwhelming requests from fans across the region, this tour marks Maher Zain's first post-Covid-19 pandemic performance in both Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu, a testament to his enduring influence in the hearts of millions. His last tour in Malaysia in 2019 sold out across four cities within days, reinforcing his legacy as one of the most beloved spiritual music artists in the region. In 2024, although Malaysia was not included in his global tour, fans remained hopeful for his long-awaited return — and the wait is now finally over. 'Malaysia represents an exceptionally important chapter in my career — arguably more significant than any other nation worldwide. I love performing in this country and region. The fans here are just marvellous and they are very close to my heart. "Few artists can point to a country that has been so instrumental in shaping the start of their singing career,' said Maher Zain via Zoom during the press conference with local media. 'To the fans who've waited six years — me and my tream are coming back for you. Let's make this tour something we'll remember forever. I'm really hoping to see the concert halls filled with families, young people, and long-time fans," he added. With more than 8 million followers on Instagram and 6.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Maher Zain continues to inspire and uplift through his unique blend of spiritual and contemporary music. Concertgoers can expect timeless favourites like 'Insha Allah,' 'Baraka Allahu Lakuma,' and 'Thank You Allah,' alongside newer releases, including 'Qalbi Fil Madinah' and 'Rahmatun Lil'Alameen'. The organiser, YTA, represented by said Dr. Mohd Afiq Farhan Md Hanif, from the Senior Leadership team of Yayasan Tengku Abdullah, said the event is more than just a concert and in fact, it is a celebration of unity, inspiration, and the timeless power of music that transcends cultures and communities. 'At YTA, we believe in the importance of fostering a community that appreciates meaningful art, positive expression, and instilling values that uplift and inspire. This concert is not just about music or entertainment. It is about creating moments that resonate deeply, spreading messages of compassion, resilience, and hope that go far beyond the stage,' said Dr Mohd Afiq. "We truly believe that events like this can leave a lasting impact on all of us, reminding us of thepower of music to heal and unite. It also an event where we can see Maher live since many of us in this country grew up listening to his music during weddings, Eid celebrations, and everyday moments of reflection."
